Book Synopsis The Finale in Western Instrumental Music by : Michael Talbot
Download or read book The Finale in Western Instrumental Music written by Michael Talbot and published by Oxford Monographs on Music. This book was released on 2001 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge that finales are by tradition (and perhaps also necessarily) 'different' from other movements has been around a long time, but this is the first time that the special nature of finales in instrumental music has been examined comprehensively and in detail. Three main types offinale, labelled 'relaxant', 'summative', and 'valedictory', are identified. Each type is studied closely, with a wealth of illustration and analytical commentary covering the entire period from the Renaissance to the present day. The history of finales in five important genres -- suite, sonata, string quartet, symphony, and concerto -- is traced, and the parallels and divergences between these traditions are identified. Several wider issues are mentioned, including narrativity, musical rounding, inter-movement relationships, and the nature of codas. The book ends with a look at thefinales of all Shostakovich's string quartets, in which examples of most of the types may be found.
Book Synopsis The Essential Canon of Classical Music by : David Dubal
Download or read book The Essential Canon of Classical Music written by David Dubal and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 1195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “entertaining and informative” comprehensive guide to 240 classical composers and their music—from the medieval era to the modern age (Library Journal). Music, according to Aaron Copland, can thrive only if there are “gifted listeners.” But today’s listeners must choose between classical and rock, opera and rap, and the choices can seem overwhelming at times. In The Essential Canon of Classical Music, David Dubal comes to the aid of the struggling listener and provides a cultural-literacy handbook for classical music. Dubal identifies the 240 composers whose works are most important to an understanding of classical music and offers a comprehensive, chronological guide to their lives and works. He has searched beyond the traditional canon to introduce readers to little—known works by some of the most revered names in classical music—Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert—as well as to the major works of lesser-known composers. In a spirited and opinionated voice, Dubal seeks to rid us of the notion of “masterpieces” and instead to foster a new generation of master listeners. The result is an uncommon collection of the wonders classical music has to offer.

Book Synopsis Strong on Music by : Vera Brodsky Lawrence
Download or read book Strong on Music written by Vera Brodsky Lawrence and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-12-18 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume of Strong on Music, Vera Brodsky Lawrence carries into the 1850s her landmark account of the nineteenth-century New York music scene. Using music entries from George Templeton Strong's famous journals—most published here for the first time—as a point of departure, Lawrence provides a vivid portrait of a vibrant musical culture. Each chapter presents one year in the musical life of New York City, with Lawrence's extensive commentary enriched both by excerpts from Strong's diaries and a lavish selection of little-known music criticism and comment from the period. The reviews, written by an often truculent, sometimes venal tribe of music journalists, cover the entire world of music—from opera to barrel organ, salon to saloon. In this New York, operas performed by renowned artists are parodied by blackface minstrels; performances of the Philharmonic Society are drowned by the raucous chatter of flirtatious adolescents, who turn concerts into a noisy singles' hangout; and irate critics trash the first performances of Verdi operas, calling the plots indecent and the scores noisy and unmelodic. In this volatile atmosphere, a native musical culture is born; its whose first faltering efforts are dubiously received, and the first American composers begin to emerge.

Download or read book Becoming Elektra written by Mick Houghton and published by Jawbone Press. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of Elektra Records in the Jac Holzman years, from 1950 to 1973, Becoming Elektra tells the story of the label's growth from a small folk label to a major hit-making concern. Jac Holzman's role in founding and running the company is central to the story, and his capacity for the lateral thinking that led to innovations such as the first-ever sampler album and a million-selling series of sound effects records is a recurring theme. Opening with the moment that Holzman discovered The Doors, the story then goes back to the '50s, when the label brought folk music to a wide audience through artists such as Jean Ritchie, Josh White, Theodore Bikel, and Bob Gibson. Moving into the '60s and '70s, the story covers artists that read like an inventory of musical innovation: Love, Judy Collins, Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, David Ackles, Phil Ochs, Bread, Queen, Mickey Newbury, The Incredible String Band, Carly Simon, The Stooges and The MC5.
