Book excerpt: The following dissertation concerning the Trinity, as the reader ought to be informed, has been written in order to guard against the sophistries of those who disdain to begin with faith, and are deceived by a crude and perverse love of reason. Now one class of such men endeavor to transfer to things incorporeal and spiritual the ideas they have formed, whether through experience of the bodily senses, or by natural human wit and diligent quickness, or by the aid of art, from things corporeal; so as to seek to measure and conceive of the former by the latter. Peyko and the writers of the Metro Monthly not only chronicle the history of Youngstown, but also capture the essence of their home. The blows of hammers and the humming of mills once echoed throughout the Mahoning Valley. Steel reigned supreme, and immigrants from every corner of Europe came to forge new lives and an enduring community. When the sounds of industry were silenced, Youngstown remained a strong and vibrant community. Peyko and company create a portrait of their city through a beautifully rendered collection of vignettes.

Book excerpt: The Lower East Side has been home to some of the city's most iconic restaurants, shopping venues, and architecture. The neighborhood has also welcomed generations of immigrants, from newly arrived Italians and Jews to today's Latino and Asian newcomers. This history has become somewhat obscured, however, as the Lower East Side can appear more hip than historic, with wealth and gentrification changing the character of the neighborhood. Chronicling these developments, along with the hidden gems that still speak of a vibrant immigrant identity, Joyce Mendelsohn provides a complete guide to the Lower East Side of then and now. After an extensive history that stretches back to Manhattan's first settlers, Mendelsohn offers 5 self-guided walking tours, including a new passage through the Bowery, that take the reader to more than 150 sites and highlight the dynamics of a community of contrasts: aged tenements nestled among luxury apartment towers abut historic churches and synagogues. With updated and revised maps, historical data, and an entirely new community to explore, Mendelsohn writes a brand-new chapter in an old New York story.

Book excerpt: The title of this monograph, ‘Polish-Jewish Re-Remembering’, refers to the post-1989, thirty-year-long process of reviving attention to Polish-Jewish relations in historical, cultural, and literary studies, including the impact of Jews on the development of Polish culture, their presence in Polish social life, and the relationships between Jews and non-Jews in Poland. The book consists of four parts: the first focuses on Polish, Jewish and Polish-Jewish Literature (dealing mainly with pre-1939 literary works); the second, on the post-war literary output of the Polish-Jewish writer Arnold Słucki (1920–1972); the third, on Polish-Israeli literary images in the works of writers who were active in Israel (1948–2018); and the fourth, on recent (after 2000) Polish Holocaust literature.

Lewis.Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant traditions drink from the well of a common tradition rooted in the early church. Many Evangelicals are now reengaging with the practice of the early church as they seek to live as disciples today. Remembering the past is essential for facing the future. In Remembering Our Future leaders and theologians reflect on a range of issues for which a vibrant contemporary faith requires a careful listening to the past. What is the place of tradition in the church's life? How should we interpret the Bible? How should we worship? What, in other words, might Deep Church look like?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think about your life as a bookshelf. The author invites you to sit down with him and pull out the various stories that make up your life. Examples are the Book of Love or Birth, occupation and travel, but also hidden away, the Book of Death. You will go on a journey with the author to explore the various aspects of story telling relating to your life and the world. The book explores how narration is interwoven into our world. The level of the self is explored, and a model of the "embodied and embedded Self" is proposed and discussed. Positive illusions are key in keeping us going via narration. The concept of the other is examined. What is special about a family, and what type of stories are told? The family portrait as frozen time. The other is often perceived as evil such as witches, the political other, or outsiders. How do we use the other to shape stories about the self and groups we belong to? Contemporary issues are investigated for stories such as racism, capitalism, democracy, or conspiracy theories. Which aspects are true and where does story telling start? Does liquid power indicate a constant circulation of elites, or are we getting closer to a truly democratic society? To understand the present, we need to revisit the past. The author takes you back, far back to the exit from the existential cave. What traits emerged during evolution that are still playing out today in shaping our view of the world? Is inequality an economical problem, or a psychological viewpoint, or is this question wrong? We will look at how humans emerged and question the simplistic view that it was an increase in cognition or language acquisition. Is this not another story told by scientists? Could there be a more violent and dark side to human nature that lurks underneath the surface? If we look at contemporary events, it often appears that way. On the journey, you will encounter various thinkers and philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault, Norbert Elias, Stephen Pinker, Martin Heidegger, and Judith Shklar. There will be a movie night with The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad. Make sure you have the popcorn ready. Detective novels and serial killer dramas will be explored to look at our most cherished heroes. Is the detective just a modern day angel? Why do the good guys always win in the end? The book ends with a consolidated system of thought, a Gedankensystem. Disagree or agree, but you are invited to propose your own and join the discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of "The Rapture" -- the return of Christ to rescue and deliver Christians off the earth -- is an extremely popular interpretation of the Bible's Book of Revelation and a jumping-off point for the best-selling "Left Behind" series of books. This interpretation, based on a psychology of fear and destruction, guides the daily acts of thousands if not millions of people worldwide. In The Rapture Exposed, Barbara Rossing argues that this script for the world's future is nothing more than a disingenuous distortion of the Bible. The truth, Rossing argues, is that Revelation offers a vision of God's healing love for the world. The Rapture Exposed reclaims Christianity from fundamentalists' destructive reading of the biblical story and back into God's beloved community.

This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewel thefts, missing persons, even murder are all elements in the world of the great detective Sherlock Holmes. What connects the stories in this book is that the cases he and his biographer Dr. John H. Watson investigate are based on adventures beloved of childhood. In a novel twist to the usual Holmes pastiches, Mrs. Puhl has based her plots involving Mr. Sherlock Holmes on folk tales, nursery rhymes and other snippets of children's literature. She has brought them into the Victorian era and kept them true to the expectations for Holmesian stories. But these are not children's tales. There are no talking rabbits, no flying carpets or magic wands. There is not always a happy ending. They are all grounded in the logical world of Holmes and Watson. Two men are determined to prove in a race which of them is faster. A child is missing and presumed dead. Can Sherlock Holmes help heal the mother's broken heart? A baby is found in a basket at the foot of the seventeen steps to 221b Baker Street. Did an ancient legend lead to a modern-day murder? Join Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his biographer Dr. John H. Watson as they explore the unusual cases brought to them from the land of bedtime stories and wise adages. You may never feel quite the same again about children's literature.
