The combined effects of COVID-19 and energy production and price shocks pushed the economy further into recession. A decisive policy response helped contain the virus spread and protect lives and livelihoods. The fiscal position worsened due to significant tax revenues shortfalls, pushing public debt up. The vaccination pace accelerated recently, but vaccine hesitancy remains high, amid a potential new wave of infections.
Book Synopsis Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago by : Kirk Peter Meighoo
Download or read book Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago written by Kirk Peter Meighoo and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean are all self-governing, determining their own futures. But some 40 years after gaining independence from Britain, the question remains whether these countries are truly democratic and whether the parliamentary and electoral systems adopted, are well suited to the Caribbean experience. Meighoo and Jamadar answer these questions in the negative. A true democracy, they argue, is one where the Legislature has the authority and the strength to make the Executive effectively accountable and responsible to it and where the electoral system results in the true practical separation of the Legislature and the Executive. Using Trinidad and Tobago as the model, Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago offers an overview of the constitutional reform process in the Commonwealth Caribbean. In these young, postcolonial democracies, where party politics have had a negative impact on the process of democratic reform, the authors review the historical, political and cultural motivations that have spawned the most recent debates on constitutional reform; and more particularly on the proposals for parliamentary and electoral reform. The book concludes with a review of past proposals and recommendations, and puts forward the authors' own suggestions for reform. At a time when most of the Commonwealth Caribbean is undergoing a process of constitutional debate and change, this book makes a valuable contribution to the discussion and provides a basis for the informed citizen, student or pundit to judge the process of reform. Download or read book Trinidad and Tobago written by International Monetary Fund. Western Hemisphere Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2018 Article IV Consultation highlights that Trinidad and Tobago is slowly recovering from a deep recession. The economy continued to contract but at a slower pace, underpinned by the strong recovery in gas production, while weak activity in construction, financial services, and trade, continued foreign exchange shortages, and slow pace of public investment dampened non-energy sector growth. Positive growth should return from 2018 as the recovery takes hold in both sectors. Good progress has been made in fiscal consolidation through spending cuts, but public debt continued to rise, approaching the government’s soft target of 65 percent of GDP. Economic prospects are expected to improve over the medium term, but remain heavily dependent on the energy sector.

Book Synopsis Adventure Guide to Trinidad and Tobago by : Kathleen O'Donnell
Download or read book Adventure Guide to Trinidad and Tobago written by Kathleen O'Donnell and published by Hunter Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2001-03 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although definitely a part of the Caribbean, these two islands are unique, refusing to conform with the stock Caribbean image created by glossy brochures and travel agencies. They are both generous and Caribbean-spirited, but quite capable of going their own way. This Adventure Guide takes you across the nation from mountains and hills to grasslands, savannahs and palm-lined beaches, offering the intrepid traveler a ticket to explore. Birdwatchers are drawn by the chance to see the beautiful scarlet ibis. Night-time excursions allow visitors to watch the miraculous egg-laying practices of the leatherback turtle. And caiman smaller versions of the South's alligators are a common sight. And then there's Carnival, which offers wild dances, fantastical costumes and frenzied revellers. Whatever your reason to visit T&T, you have the right guide in hand. Accommodations, restaurants, travel tips, sights, museums, excursions it's all here. A special section is dedicated to the nation's booming yachting industry, with details on marinas, facilities and services. I wish I'd had this book the first time I visited Trinidad and Tobago. The book fully describes the culture of these island people and this knowledge would make a trip to these wonderful islands even more enjoyable. I also believe it's a good choice for readers who can't make the trip but still want to taste the culture. -- Amazon customerI've been to TNT once for two weeks and am returning again in a few months. I bought the book to refresh my memory and, more importantly, get me excited about my return trip. It's a great read, and as the back cover suggests, it really is written for the traveler who wants to experience more than just sunbathing. However, once you've been to Trindad and Tobago, you discover that they are not your generic Caribbean islands. Visiting Trindad and Tobago is more of a cultural vacation than an island getaway. Once you step foot off the plane at Piarco airport, you'll never want to leave, or you'll want to go back once every year. The two islands are full of charisma, and O'Donnell and Pefkaros do a good job of capturing this spirit in the book. You really cannot be intimidated by the cultures of TNT. From the street vendor corn soup, to crab and dumplings, down de islands, Maracas, Pigeon Point, Speyside, fried flying fish, Caribs, lorries, maxis, wining, Trinidad's great bar/club scene, the Northern Range, etc. - this book virtually covers all Trinidad and Tobago vacation opportunities and experiences. -- Amazon customerAn excellent take-long tote, as is the more adventurous Trinidad & Tobago, 2nd Edition by Kathleen O'Donnell and Stassi Pefkaros, which updates information on adventure travel with special focus on the wildlife and culture of the islands. -- Midwest Book Review
