Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trilogy of Dubrovnik In his Trilogy of Dubrovnik the author has caught the tragical moment of the city's loss of liberty. The three parts apparently disconnected are closely united because of their deep relation to the past. Whatever the characters under the strain of the new life might be doing, the little brass bell in the chapel whether pulled by invisible hands or whether not touched at all, is always sounding, reminding the noblemen of their sacred past. In "Allons Enfants" where the French army is marching into the city to the triumphant air of the Marseillaise, the poet strikes the keynote to his plays. There has been a great deal of discussion, loud screaming and noise before the fatal moment; there is a great stillness and deathlike resignation meeting the setting sun of liberty. Dubrovnik, the free Republic on the Adriatic, is no more. The second part of the Trilogy "Afterglow" gives us a picture of the city after its loss of liberty. The problem we meet there is a well known one and somehow forshadows thoughts developed in the third part. "On the Terrace." Here the poet has placed his action in the beginning of the 20th century, we deal with those who have learned to forget and who are seeking to drown their present unhappiness in the deafening din of modern amusements. But there are still those who can neither forget nor understand the new life and we are continually reminded of the past. Yes, in the poet's close relation to the glorious past we must seek his poetical inspiration. Ivo Vojnovich is a native of Dubrovnik. Belonging to one of the oldest Aristocratic families, he has lived the life he is picturing. I remember him telling me how Madam Mara in Afterglow was a very close portrait of an old friend of his and in the same way most of his characters are traced from life. Download or read book The Campus Trilogy written by David Lodge and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A trio of dazzling novels in a comic mode that the author has now made completely his own...a cause for celebration." -The New York Times Book Review David Lodge's three delightfully sophisticated campus novels, now gathered together in one volume, expose the world of academia at its best-and its worst. In Changing Places, we meet Philip Swallow, British lecturer in English at the University of Rummidge, and the flamboyant American Morris Zapp of Euphoric State University, who participate in a professorial exchange program at the close of the tumultuous sixties. Ten years later in Small World, older but not noticeably wiser, they are let loose on the international conference circuit-along with a memorable and somewhat oversexed cast of dozens. And in Nice Work, the leftist feminist Dr. Robyn Penrose at Rummidge University is assigned to shadow the director of a local engineering firm, sparking a collision of ideologies and lifestyles that seems unlikely to foster anything other than mutual antipathy.

Download or read book The Murdstone Trilogy written by Mal Peet and published by Candlewick. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How hard can it be to write a fantasy trilogy? From Carnegie Medalist Mal Peet comes an outrageously funny black comedy about an impoverished literary writer who makes a pact with the devil. Award-winning YA author Philip Murdstone is in trouble. His star has waned. The world is leaving him behind. His agent, the ruthless Minerva Cinch, convinces him that his only hope is to write a sword-and-sorcery blockbuster. Unfortunately, Philip—allergic to the faintest trace of Tolkien—is utterly unsuited to the task. In a dark hour, a dwarfish stranger comes to his rescue. But the deal he makes with Pocket Wellfair turns out to have Faustian consequences. The Murdstone Trilogy is a richly dark comedy described by one U.K. reviewer as “totally insane in the best way possible.”
