Book excerpt: This beautifully haunting eighty page hardcover book features thirty-one disturbing yet sublime graphite drawings created in thirty-one days by artist Daniel Martin Diaz. A gruelling yet exhilarating journey into the subconscious, this intimate reflection depicts the struggles between faith, death and the after-life. Diaz has developed a technique of minimalism, which includes painting on distressed wood and using handmade wooden frames. His use of Latin allows him to explore an ancient language that is expressive as it is beautiful.

Book Synopsis Liber Mahameleth by : Jacques Sesiano
Download or read book Liber Mahameleth written by Jacques Sesiano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 1823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Liber mahameleth is a work in Latin written in the mid-12th century based (mainly) on Arabic sources from Islamic Spain. It is now our principal source on mathematics in Islamic Spain at that time; There are few extant Arabic texts and no one is as complete as the LM. It is also the second largest mathematical work from the Latin Middle Ages (the other is by Fibonacci, some 50 years later). Since the three main manuscripts preserving it are incomplete and there are many scribal errors, a reliable Latin text has been established, which reports (in notes) the various readings of the manuscripts and the errors in them. This is how a so-called critical edition is made. This edition of the Latin text is preceded by General Introduction, describing the various manuscripts, the content of the work and what we know about its author. Part Two of the volume is a translation of the text and ends with a glossary of Latin terms. The glossary will be of great importance for the knowledge of Latin scientific terms from that time, since there is no other mathematical text of this size from the 12th century. Part Three begins with a short introduction and then analyzes all the problems from the text, with a summary of the mathematical methods involved in each chapter. The commentary is a companion to the translation and explains the author's solving methods.

Book Synopsis The Shepherd of Hermas in Latin by : Christian Tornau
Download or read book The Shepherd of Hermas in Latin written by Christian Tornau and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shepherd of Hermas is a Greek visionary text written in Rome during the 2nd century CE with the aim to exhort men to change life and repent for their sins, taking advantage of the last chance given by the Lord before world’s end. The Shepherd is a very important witness of history of the early Christian thought and it was so widely-read that it was immediately translated into Latin and other languages. Despite the considerable amount of Greek textual witnesses of the Shepherd (more than twenty-five written between the 2nd and the 14th century), its complete text did not survive until today, therefore its translations in other languages are of crucial importance for the constitutio textus. Among the various translations, the Latin Vulgata stands out for its antiquity, accuracy and links with some important Greek witnesses like the Papyrus Bodmer 38 (4th/5th century) and the Codex Athous Grigoriou 96 (14th century). The last critical edition of the Vulgata was made by H.A. Hilgenfeld in 1873 and is still quoted by scholars today. The Shepherd of Hermas in Latin offers a more modern and complete philological study through an investigation of new unknown textual sources from 9th to 14th century and gives new philological and textual data with the aim to replace the accurate but not updated edition of Hilgenfeld.

Book Synopsis Mysterium Fidei by : Daniel Martin Diaz
Download or read book Mysterium Fidei written by Daniel Martin Diaz and published by Last Gasp. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mysterium Fidei, which translates to Mystery of Faith, is the new collection of art from Daniel Martin Diaz. His paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by devotional folk art, which he blends with archaic imagery and old-world aesthetics, immersed in the passionate imagery of his religion. He loves New Testament stories and the surreal visions they conjure; in this local 19th century mission, he was moved by the crude, darkened old Mexican religious paintings, a hybrid of European and vernacular Mexican art.
