Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culinary Landmarks is a definitive history and bibliography of Canadian cookbooks from the beginning, when La cuisinière bourgeoise was published in Quebec City in 1825, to the mid-twentieth century. Over the course of more than ten years Elizabeth Driver researched every cookbook published within the borders of present-day Canada, whether a locally authored text or a Canadian edition of a foreign work. Every type of recipe collection is included, from trade publishers' bestsellers and advertising cookbooks, to home economics textbooks and fund-raisers from church women's groups. The entries for over 2,200 individual titles are arranged chronologically by their province or territory of publication, revealing cooking and dining customs in each part of the country over 125 years. Full bibliographical descriptions of first and subsequent editions are augmented by author biographies and corporate histories of the food producers and kitchen-equipment manufacturers, who often published the books. Driver's excellent general introduction sets out the evolution of the cookbook genre in Canada, while brief introductions for each province identify regional differences in developments and trends. Four indexes and a 'Chronology of Canadian Cookbook History' provide other points of access to the wealth of material in this impressive reference book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the five major Shakespearean tragediesHamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, and OthelloKing Lear is perhaps the most challenging. Issues of rulership, family and blood, are overlaid with bastardy, loyalty, lust, and deceit. Add to this the apparently gratuitous on-stage blinding of Gloucester, the deaths of Cordelia, Lear, Gloucester, and Kent, and one might be inclined to agree with Samuel Johnson that The good suffer more than the evil, that love and suffering, in this play, are almost interchangeable terms and the driving force of the action is derived from the power of the evil to inflict mental agony upon the good (quoted in Kermode, 505). However, one would be mistaken to accept wholeheartedly the happy endings of the eighteenth and nineteenth century revisionists. While the pleasant ending would certainly ease the sensibilities of the audience, it would omit the Aristotlean concepts of hamartia and the purgation of fear and pity attendant upon actually witnessing Shakespeares King Lear, the necessary catharsis, a possible scapegoat for our own emotions. Of course, the ending is to some extent unpleasant and even shocking; however, one can argue that the ending is organic to the play; the ending IS, to a great extent, the play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work began 12th month of 1987, 28 years ago. Over the years, I wrote and lost the manuscript 7 times before completion, only to have my book bag stolen. I finally manage to publish two small works, entitled ABCs OF ALKEMI & 123 = WISDOM. In those works I used poetry, illustrations, Gematria and numerology to introduce the Alphabet as The Book of Egyptian God Thoth, namely, the TAROT. In this work, it became my task to elaborate on the ABCs as the Alkemical operation of the human psyche, a.k.a. soul. In short, this work is about three things: 1. Love for Wisdom (Philosophy) 2. The TAROT as The Wheel of GOD (rotation of Great Operation Divine) 3. The ABCs as the alpha-numerical system of Light ON Science (CONSCIENCE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Freedman’s gorgeously illustrated history is “an epic quest to locate the roots of American foodways and follow changing tastes through the decades, a search that takes [Freedman] straight to the heart of American identity” (William Grimes). Hailed as a “grand theory of the American appetite” (Rien Fertel, Wall Street Journal), food historian Paul Freedman’s American Cuisine demonstrates that there is an exuberant, diverse, if not always coherent, American cuisine that reflects the history of the nation itself. Combining historical rigor and culinary passion, Freedman underscores three recurrent themes—regionality, standardization, and variety—that shape a “captivating history” (Drew Tewksbury, Los Angeles Times) of American culinary habits from post-colonial days to the present. The book is also filled with anecdotes that will delight food lovers: · how dry cereal was created by William Kellogg for people with digestive problems; · that Chicken Parmesan is actually an American invention; · and that Florida Key-Lime Pie, based on a recipe developed by Borden’s condensed milk, goes back only to the 1940s. A new standard in culinary history, American Cuisine is an “an essential book” (Jacques Pepin) that sheds fascinating light on a past most of us thought we never had.

Book excerpt: Life hurts, because we live in a fallen world. Everyone experiences pain in life at one time or another and different levels of pain. Whatever level of pain you’re experiencing, PAIN IS PAIN...AND IT HURTS! I would like to share my personal experience of pain. A time when so many things seemed to be going wrong and some things seemed IMPOSSIBLE...and at times, I didn’t know how I would make it through. BUT... I DID MAKE IT THROUGH! ...AND THE IMPOSSIBLE became the POSSIBLE. I open my heart only to try and help the one’s that find themselves in that dark place that only the “Light of Hope” can lead them out. Whatever name your “pain” has: discouragement, depression, loss of a loved one, a broken heart or just feeling lost, let me hand you the light that led me out. The “Light of Hope,” Jesus. ‘PAIN’ is ‘PAIN’ JESUS is the ‘WAY OUT’ In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. (John 16:33) I am the Way the truth and the light. (John 8:12)
