Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing financial system in the United States is not working for Native Americans. The aggregate data on chronic Native American poverty, unemployment, and lack of reservation business activity indicates a substantial disconnect between tribal communities and traditional sources of development capital such as banks, credit unions, and other commercial lenders. Structural conditions in tribal communities do not embody the legal elements or collateral base required by commercial banks to provide loans and credit for Native American economic development. What tribal communities need is a new financial system, built upon an understanding of the unique economic and legal conditions of Native American nations, to provide access to capital on terms that are structurally and culturally consistent with the realities of Native American life. This paper describes an innovative program to create a new financial institution that can facilitate much-needed access to capital and affordable financial services for Native American nations: the Tribally Chartered Bank. Organized under the sovereign authority of one or more tribal governments and free from the short-term focus of publicly listed banks, the TCB would offer a means for tribes to secure the “patient capital” required for long-term economic and infrastructure development.

CDFIs include regulated institutions, such as community development banks and credit unions, and non-regulated institutions, such as loan and venture capital funds. Download or read book Buffalo Inc written by Sebastian Braun and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buffalo as a business on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation Some American Indian tribes on the Great Plains have turned to bison ranching in recent years as a culturally and ecologically sustainable economic development program. This book focuses on one enterprise on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation to determine whether such projects have fulfilled expectations and how they fit with traditional and contemporary Lakota values. Drawing upon on-site fieldwork and using anthropological, economic, and ecological approaches, Sebastian Felix Braun examines the creation of Pte Hca Ka, Inc., and its management styles as they evolved over fifteen years. He paints a compelling picture of cultural change. Braun traces Pte Hca Ka from its origin as a self-sustaining project that sought to combine traditional values with modern technology. He shows how the company tried to operate on cultural and ecological ideals until the tribal government shed its cultural agenda in favor of a pure business orientation. Braun describes these changes and presents the arguments of both sides. In Buffalo Inc., bison serve as a test case for a broader analysis of issues such as sustainability, economic development, tribal politics, and cultural identity.
