Book excerpt: As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Book excerpt: We all know the story of Guy Fawkes who wanted to blow up parliament. The very people who were going to replace James would be present at the opening. How did he think he would get away with it? It does not make sense unless it was a story. Now, finally, you can read about the real plot, the plot to destroy the Catholic nobility hatched by Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury. Behind the scenes, he directed and manipulated the cast in his play. Catesby, the supposed ringleader, had embraced Anglicanism, bringing his children up in the Church of England, yet he is portrayed as the zealous leader of the plot. Guy Fawkes was simply a night-watchman guarding barrels. James I feared being stabbed or blown up; Cecil ran an efficient spy network; and he was able to play on James's fears. Read the true story that relies on facts. For far too long we have meekly accepted the propaganda of the age and ignored the flimsiness of those contrived coincidences that gave Cecil's outrageous plot credence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Design and Analysis for Tree Improvement provides a set of practical procedures to follow when planning, designing and analysing tree improvement trials. Using many fully-worked examples, it outlines how to: design field, glasshouse and laboratory trials; efficiently collect data and construct electronic data files; pre-process data, screening for data quality and outliers; analyse data from single and across-site trials using either GenStat or SAS; and interpret the results from statistical analyses. The authors address the many practical issues often faced in forest tree improvement trials and describe techniques that will give conclusive results with the minimum expense. The techniques provided are applicable to the improvement of not only trees, but to crops in general. Building on the success of the first edition, this edition includes commercially-available software packages for design generation (CycDesigN) and data pre-processing and automated generation of programs for statistical analysis (DataPlus). For analysis, it provides both GenStat and SAS programs as generated by DataPlus.

Book excerpt: The Angel Tree by Lucinda Riley is a compelling mystery of family secrets and forgotten pasts from the author of The Seven Sisters. Thirty years have passed since Greta left Marchmont Hall, a grand and beautiful house nestled in the hills of rural Monmouthshire. But when she returns to the Hall for Christmas she has no recollection of her past association with it – the result of a tragic accident that has blanked out more than two decades of her life. Then, during a walk through the wintry landscape, she stumbles across a grave in the woods, and the weathered inscription on the headstone tells her that a little boy is buried here . . . The poignant discovery strikes a chord in Greta's mind and soon ignites a quest to rediscover her lost memories. She begins to piece together the fragments of not only her own story, but that of her daughter, Cheska, who was the tragic victim of circumstances beyond her control. And, most definitely, not the angel she appeared to be . . . *First published as Not Quite an Angel under the name Lucinda Edmonds, now extensively rewritten*

It covers pathogen diversity, epidemiological knowledge, the genetic parameters of resistance observed in the field, and practical breeding aspects. The relevance of different screening tests involving artificial inoculations and the use of molecular markers for the selection of resistant material are widely covered.

Book excerpt: An accessible learning resource that develops data analysis skills for natural science students in an efficient style using the R programming language R-ticulate: A Beginner’s Guide to Data Analysis for Natural Scientists is a compact, example-based, and user-friendly statistics textbook without unnecessary frills, but instead filled with engaging, relatable examples, practical tips, online exercises, resources, and references to extensions, all on a level that follows contemporary curricula taught in large parts of the world. The content structure is unique in the sense that statistical skills are introduced at the same time as software (programming) skills in R. This is by far the best way of teaching from the authors’ experience. Readers of this introductory text will find: Explanations of statistical concepts in simple, easy-to-understand language A variety of approaches to problem solving using both base R and tidyverse Boxes dedicated to specific topics and margin text that summarizes key points A clearly outlined schedule organized into 12 chapters corresponding to the 12 semester weeks of most universities While at its core a traditional printed book, R-ticulate: A Beginner’s Guide to Data Analysis for Natural Scientists comes with a wealth of online teaching material, making it an ideal and efficient reference for students who wish to gain a thorough understanding of the subject, as well as for instructors teaching related courses.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most breeding programs of plant and animal species, genetic data (such as data from field progeny tests) are used to rank parents and help choose candidates for selection. In general, all selection processes first rank the candidates using some function of the observed data and then choose as the selected portion those candidates with the largest (or smallest) values of that function. To make maximum progress from selection, it is necessary to use a function of the data that results in the candidates being ranked as closely as possible to the true (but always unknown) ranking. Very often the observed data on various candidates are messy and unbalanced and this complicates the process of developing precise and accurate rankings. For example, for any given candidate, there may be data on that candidate and its siblings growing in several field tests of different ages. Also, there may be performance data on siblings, ancestors or other relatives from greenhouse, laboratory or other field tests. In addition, data on different candidates may differ drastically in terms of quality and quantity available and may come from varied relatives. Genetic improvement programs which make most effective use of these varied, messy, unbalanced and ancestral data will maximize progress from all stages of selection. In this regard, there are two analytical techniques, best linear prediction (BLP) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), which are quite well-suited to predicting genetic values from a wide variety of sources, ages, qualities and quantities of data.
