Book excerpt: When the history of Christianity in the 20th Century is written Trevor Huddleston will certainly occupy much space. A major figure in the battle against Apartheid in South Africa, his book Naught for Your Comfort (1956) changed the perception of liberal Westerners about what was really going on in that tortured land. Huddleston was an Anglican monk and thus subject to the rule of obedience. He was called back from South Africa when he was at the height of his intellectual and physical powers. He was made Bishop of Stepney but like too many clergyman was tainted by accusations of sexual impropriety as a result suffered to the limits of human endurance. In his retirement, he lived at the mother house of his order in Mirfield, Yorkshire but his last years were not happy ones as he faded from public attention and underwent periods of deep depression and uncertainty about his fundamental beliefs. Piers McGrandle's new biography of Huddleston is ground breaking in its analysis of what makes men great. But it also brings the reader down to earth with a thud in showing how profoundly complex are the motivations of Christians who have wide influence. As a study in human psychology, McGrandle raises issues which may be applied to many so called 'saints'. After the collapse of Apartheid, Huddleston was able to return to South Africa but never received the recognition that he thought he deserved and this also tortured him.

Book excerpt: Trevor Huddleston (b. 1913), former Bishop of Masasi, Stepney, and Mauritius, is best known for his outspoken opposition to South Africa's apartheid policies. Thirty years after his book, Naught for Your Comfort, alerted readers to the implacable nature of apartheid, he is still at the center of protest as President of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. These essays, written on the occasion of Huddleston's 75th birthday, are a tribute from some of the people whose lives and perceptions have been altered by his example. Nadine Gordimer, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Julius K. Nyerere, Donald MacKinnon, R.A. Denniston, and others offer reflections on Africa, Christology and protest, human rights and racism, the anti-apartheid struggle, and other topics, stressing throughout the contribution Huddleston has made to the betterment of people everywhere.

Book excerpt: Trevor Huddleston was perhaps the last great missionary to Africa, whose self-discovery in Sophiatown, the largest of Johannesburg's black suburbs, saw him emerge as one of the post-colonial heroes inthe evolution of Arican nationalism When he died in 1998, he was lauded by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu as South Africa's greatest friend in the darkest days of apartheid. This is not just an account of his great achievements but also a portrait of a deeply religious man whose temperament was often at odds with his vocation.

Book excerpt: Based on a true story from Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s childhood in South Africa, Desmond and the Very Mean Word reveals the power of words and the secret of forgiveness. Features an audio read-along read by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. When Desmond takes his new bicycle out for a ride through his neighborhood, his pride and joy turn to hurt and anger when a group of boys shout a very mean word at him. He first responds by shouting an insult, but soon discovers that fighting back with mean words doesn’t make him feel any better. With the help of kindly Father Trevor, Desmond comes to understand his conflicted feelings and see that all people deserve compassion, whether or not they say they are sorry. Brought to vivid life in A. G. Ford’s energetic illustrations, this heartfelt, relatable story conveys timeless wisdom about how to handle bullying and angry feelings, while seeing the good in everyone.

He is also acknowledged as one of the foremost activists in the struggle for a democratic South Africa, and helped to found both the Union of Black Journalists, the African Writers Association and the Congress of South African Writers. Born in 1935 in Western Native Township (now Westbury) across the road from Sophiatown, Mattera can lay claim to an intriguingly diverse lineage: his paternal grandfather was Italian, and he has Tswana, Khoi-Khoi and Xhosa blood in his veins. Yet diversity was hardly being celebrated at that time. In one of apartheids most infamous actions, the vibrant multicultural Sophiatown was destroyed in 1955 and replaced with the white suburb of Triomf, and the wrenching displacement, can be felt in Matteras writing. The story of his life in Sophiatown as told in this essay is intricate. Covering Matteras teenage years from 1948 to 1962 when Sophiatown was bulldozed out of existence, it weaves together both his personal experience and political development. In telling the story of his life as a coloured teenager, Mattera takes on the ambitious goal of making us recapture the crucial events of the 1950s in Sophiatown, one of the most important decades in the history of black political struggles in South Africa.

Book excerpt: The Daily Telegraph has a reputation for outstanding obituaries. This book contains the best and most colourful obituaries of clergyment in recent years, selected and introduced by Trevor Beeson, former Dean of Winchester. Ranging from Monsignor Alfred Gilbey who weekly rode to hounds in frock coat and gaiters to Brian Brindley who died surrounded by his acolytes in the midst of a five course dinner at The Atheneum. This book is highly entertaining but Trevor Beeson's extended introduction also evaluates the clerical tradition and make some fairly piercing comments about the state of the Churches today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interviews explores the role of religion in the lives of eminent South Africans who led the struggle against apartheid. Nelson Mandela, Chris Hani, Desmond Tutu, Nadine Gordimer, and seventeen other political, religious, and cultural leaders share the beliefs and values that informed the moral positions they adopted, often at great cost. From all ethnic, religious, and political backgrounds, these men and women have shaped one of the greatest political transformations of the century. What emerges from the interviews are reflections on all aspects of life in an embattled country. There are stories of the homelands and townships, and tales of imprisonment and exile. Dedicated communists relate their intense youthful devotion to Christianity; Muslim activists discuss the complexity of their relationships with their communities. As the respondents grapple with difficult questions about faith, politics, and authority, they expose a more personal picture: of their daily lives, of their pasts, and of the enormous conflicts that arise in a society that continually strains the moral fiber of its citizens. Taken together, these interviews reveal the many-faceted vision that has fueled South Africa's struggle for democracy.

Book excerpt: In spreading the message of freedom, equality, and human dignity, Nelson Mandela helped transform not only his own nation, but the entire world. Now his most important speeches are collected in a single volume. From the eve of his imprisonment to his release twenty-seven years later, from his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize to his election as South Africa's first black president, these speeches span some of the most pivotal moments of Mandela's life and his country's history. Arranged thematically and accompanied by tributes from leading world figures, Mandela's addresses memorably illustrate his lasting commitment to freedom and reconciliation, democracy and development, culture and diversity, and international peace and well-being. The extraordinary power of this volume is in the moving words and intimate tone of Mandela himself, one of the most courageous and articulate men of our time. "There is no easy way to walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires." -- Nelson Mandela, September 1953
