Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-art reference, an exchange of innovative experience, creative thinking and industry forecasts. This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth international conference in this series based in the Asia Pacific region, in Kuala Lumpur in October 2005 and is applicable to all sectors of the bridge engineering community. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE AND FUTURE PERFORMANCE The Institution of Civil Engineers has collaborated with internationally renowned bridge engineers to organise three successful conferences to celebrate the enormous achievements made in the field of bridge engineering in recent years. As a discipline, bridge engineering not only requires knowledge and experience of bridge design and construction techniques but must also deal with increasing challenges posed by the need to maintain the long-term performance of structures throughout an extended service life. In many parts of the world natural phenomena such as seismic events can cause significant damage to force major repairs or reconstruction. Therefore, it is appropriate that the first plenary session of this conference is entitled Engineering for Seismic Performance. READERSHIP This compilation of papers will benefit practising civil and structural engineers in consulting firms and government agencies, bridge contractors, research institutes, universities and colleges. In short, it is of importance to all engineers involved in any aspect of the design, construction and repair, maintenance and refurbishment of bridges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statics and mechanics of structures form a core aspect of civil engineering. This book provides an introduction to the subject, starting from classic hand-calculation types of analysis and gradually advancing to a systematic form suitable for computer implementation. It starts with statically determinate structures in the form of trusses, beams and frames. Instability is discussed in the form of the column problem - both the ideal column and the imperfect column used in actual column design. The theory of statically indeterminate structures is then introduced, and the force and deformation methods are explained and illustrated. An important aspect of the book’s approach is the systematic development of the theory in a form suitable for computer implementation using finite elements. This development is supported by two small computer programs, MiniTruss and MiniFrame, which permit static analysis of trusses and frames, as well as linearized stability analysis. The book’s final section presents related strength of materials subjects in greater detail; these include stress and strain, failure criteria, and normal and shear stresses in general beam flexure and in beam torsion. The book is well-suited as a textbook for a two-semester introductory course on structures.

This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static analysis is a special case of dynamic analysis. The main reason for using static or pseudo-static analysis is the simplicity of the design and the analysis itself. Many structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, ships, airplanes, and more are studied by a dynamic analysis, which is a more complicated and time-consuming analysis compared to a static one; such structures studied in this way are safer and their behavior is closer to reality. Thanks to the important evolution of computer science, numerical methods, and mathematical models, we are boldly confronting the analysis of the most complex structures with huge dimensions, all this in a few hours in order to have an exact behavior of these structures closer to reality through the use of static dynamics and analysis. Structural Dynamics and Static Nonlinear Analysis From Theory to Application is concerned with the challenging subject of structural dynamics and the hydrodynamic principle as well as nonlinear static methods of analysis for seismic design of structures. The chapters are arranged into three parts. The first deals with single-degree of freedom (DOF) systems. The second part concerns systems with multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) with which one can create analytical and mathematical models of the most complex structures, passing through the hydrodynamic principle with an application in real cases. The last part sheds light on the principle of nonlinear static methods and its application in a real case. This book is ideal for academics, researchers, practicing structural engineers, and research students in the fields of civil and/or mechanical engineering along with practitioners interested in structural dynamics, static dynamics and analysis, and real-life applications.

Book excerpt: An authoritative guide to the theory and practice of static and dynamic structures analysis Static and Dynamic Analysis of Engineering Structures examines static and dynamic analysis of engineering structures for methodological and practical purposes. In one volume, the authors – noted engineering experts – provide an overview of the topic and review the applications of modern as well as classic methods of calculation of various structure mechanics problems. They clearly show the analytical and mechanical relationships between classical and modern methods of solving boundary value problems. The first chapter offers solutions to problems using traditional techniques followed by the introduction of the boundary element methods. The book discusses various discrete and continuous systems of analysis. In addition, it offers solutions for more complex systems, such as elastic waves in inhomogeneous media, frequency-dependent damping and membranes of arbitrary shape, among others. Static and Dynamic Analysis of Engineering Structures is filled with illustrative examples to aid in comprehension of the presented material. The book: Illustrates the modern methods of static and dynamic analysis of structures; Provides methods for solving boundary value problems of structural mechanics and soil mechanics; Offers a wide spectrum of applications of modern techniques and methods of calculation of static, dynamic and seismic problems of engineering design; Presents a new foundation model. Written for researchers, design engineers and specialists in the field of structural mechanics, Static and Dynamic Analysis of Engineering Structures provides a guide to analyzing static and dynamic structures, using traditional and advanced approaches with real-world, practical examples.

It synthesizes well-established theories on modern control as well as statics and dynamics of deformable bodies. Discussions concentrate on the discrete parameter adaptive structures dealing with actuator placement, actuator selection, and actuation computation problems - keeping these structures at close proximity of any chosen nominal state with the least energy consumption. An introduction to the distributed parameter adaptive structures is also provided. The book follows that modern trend in research and industry striving to incorporate intelligence into engineered products through microprocessors that are becoming smaller, faster, and cheaper at astounding rates. Not using them in engineered products may become an enormous liability. Resulting from the advances in materials technology on sensors and actuator technologies as well as the availability of very powerful and reliable microprocessors, there is an ever-increasing interest in actively controlling the behavior of engineering systems. Engineers and engineering scientists must revive and broaden their activities to maximize applications for predicting and controlling the behavior of deformable bodies. Topics include: An introduction to adaptive structures Incremental excitation-response relations in static and dynamic cases Active control of response in static case Statically determinate adaptive structures Statically indeterminate adaptive structures Active vibration control for autonomous and non-autonomous cases Active control against wind Active control against seismic loads Distributed parameter adaptive structures The technology of adaptive structures has created an environment where the analysis, not the computation, of structural response - du
