Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine trends and preferences in high school choral music repertoire in the United States, as identified by All State conductors, and to use this information to create an updated listing of recommended repertoire. All choral pieces chosen for advanced mixed choruses at All State events during the 2015-2016 school year were examined. Analysis indicated a significant preference for music from the Modern period (1900-present) compared to all other accepted style periods. As a model, an annotated repertoire list was constructed based on the selections that were performed more than once at the 2015-2016 All State choral events. The repertoire list may serve as resources for teachers, All State conductors, professors who train pre-service teachers, and other researchers. Further research beyond this study should be done to compare other years to the 2015-2016 school year, especially regarding the style preferences of those who select repertoire for such events.

Book excerpt: Choral music in the American high school has been the victim of a great deal of experimentation in the past while supervisors were seeking its best medium and educators were pondering its place in the curriculum. The high school vocal music department has passed through several periods, each characterized by a particular interest. There were, for instance, periods of hymn singing, lyrical frivolities, oratorio singing, and a recent period when the word a cappella, applied to any chorus or choral composition, became a panacea. Although they were times of poorly balanced music curricula, these eras of specialized interest were not useless, for through them vocal music education has gained the necessary experience from which a well-balanced program of high standards may be built. At the present time there is a need for evaluation of the work being done. It is not the purpose of this thesis to trace historical development of high school choral music, to remedy present ills, or to discuss choral techniques but rather to take stock of the present situation. The study of existing conditions was made by means of a questionnaire which is discussed in full in the second section of this thesis. Previous studies were used as a basis for statements of conditions in the past. Studies made by committees of the Music Supervisors Conference and the Music Teachers National Association, the Bureau of Education of the Department of the Interior, and a few books of authorities in the field have been particularly helpful. A discussion of general trends in the voice class movement in the high school is included because this movement is so closely allied with the future of high school choral music. Recommendations and predictions for the future have been made on the basis of these previous studies, results gleaned from the questionnaire, and the writer's personal experience.

Book excerpt: Part One of this study explored the use that Missouri school choral directors made of the complimentary demonstration recordings and accompanying materials provided for them by choral music publishers. The choral directors responding to a survey (N = 157) had a variety of teaching assignments, but all included some teaching at the secondary level. The group was evenly divided between directors with a bachelor's degree and those with a graduate degree. Most of the respondents in the study found the complimentary demonstration recordings valuable and made use of them when selecting literature for their choral ensembles. Although some directors spent a large portion of their budgets on titles from these recordings, many directors bought only a few titles. Directors seemed to indicate that they believed the recordings were valuable, regardless of the number of purchases they made from them. Part Two of this study explored a database of information collected from the complimentary demonstration recordings that were produced by choral music publishers over a nineteen-year period. The number of titles published in single voicings for mixed voices and female voices dominated, probably because of the prevalence of those ensembles in schools. Many titles were available in multiple voicings, but the categories of mixed, reduced-mixed, two-part and mixed, reduced-mixed, female were the largest. The popularity of these two categories was probably because of their adaptability to groups according to gender and ability. The pre-recorded accompaniment was a large rehearsal aid category throughout the course of the study.

Of interest were the amount of world music used with advanced choirs, which areas of the world were represented, and reasons for its inclusion in the curriculum. Relationships between convention attendance and world music usage were studied, as well as city population size and world music usage. Further, barriers that prohibit teachers from incorporating world music were also examined. After obtaining email addresses for the population, 312 high school choral teachers, a questionnaire containing 13 questions regarding personal and professional demographics, world music programming in the choral curriculum, and issues affecting world music programming was sent out using Survey Monkey. Questions were either single response, based on a 5-point Likert scale, or free response. Upon close of the questionnaire, participants total (N=124) represented a 40% return rate. Results provided further understanding of current programming trends among high school choral directors. When examining relationships between convention attendance and use of world music, results indicated a very weak correlation. However, this correlation corresponds to the main barriers participants find in programming world music. Barriers included lack of experience, exposure and access to world music, and free responses revealed a desire for more sessions at conventions. City population size was also related to world music programming, where participants in metropolis areas tended to program more world music than those in rural areas. Participants indicated diversity in choral music programming by world regions. They most often programmed world music from Africa, followed by music from Latin and South America. Music from the regions South and Southeast Asia and Oceana were rarely programmed. Although participants used music from around the world, the majority did not select music based on their own students' ethnicity. However, free responses indicated they programmed world music so students could understand different cultures. Finally, participants indicated barriers that prevented world music programming. The greatest barrier was a lack of experience, followed closely by a lack of opportunity to learn about world music. Free responses confirmed this finding with a desire for more convention sessions focused on world music. The need for additional sessions corroborates the lack of access expressed by participants. Few teachers lacked interest in world music and funding was not a strong barrier in programming.
