Book Synopsis Trends in Signal Transduction Research by : Jennifer N. Meyers
Download or read book Trends in Signal Transduction Research written by Jennifer N. Meyers and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signal transduction is any process by which a cell converts one kind of signal or stimulus into another. Processes referred to as signal transduction often involve a sequence of biochemical reactions inside the cell, which are carried out by enzymes and linked through second messengers. In many transduction processes, an increasing number of enzymes and other molecules become engaged in the events that proceed from the initial stimulus. Responses of cells to environmental signals, toxins and stressors have profound implications for diverse aspects of human health and disease including development, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, asthma, heart, autoimmune diseases and cancer. The delineation of the signal transduction pathways affected in these and other complex human diseases are likely to present new avenues for therapeutic intervention and understanding of human disease mechanisms.
Book Synopsis Trends in Cellular Signaling by : Dave E. Caplin
Download or read book Trends in Cellular Signaling written by Dave E. Caplin and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell signalling is the communication inside a cell or with its environment. It plays an important role in cellular growth, survival and apoptosis. For instance, the growth of a cell requires production of certain proteins. The genes that encode these proteins are located in DNA inside the nucleus while the initial signal for cellular growth may come from outside the cell. To induce the expression of these genes, the external signal must pass through specific pathways to reach these genes in DNA. The signalling pathway involves several proteins. If any one of them becomes abnormal or non-functional, the cellular process would be altered, which may cause disease. Therefore, knowing the detailed pathway is very important in understanding the pathogenesis of diseases.
Book Synopsis Signaling and the Cytoskeleton by : Kermit L. Carraway
Download or read book Signaling and the Cytoskeleton written by Kermit L. Carraway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the relationships between cell signaling and the cytoplasmic cytoskeleton in fundamental cell processes, thus bridging the gap between two very active aspects of molecular cell biology. It covers the two main - and reciprocal - questions of these relationships: How are structure and function of the cytoskeleton affected by external signals which impinge on the cell? How does the cytoskeleton influence the cellular signaling processes which determine cell behavior?

Book Synopsis Cellular Signaling in Health and Disease by : Martin Beckerman
Download or read book Cellular Signaling in Health and Disease written by Martin Beckerman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s world, three great classes of non-infectious diseases – the metabolic syndromes (such as type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis), the cancers, and the neurodegenerative disorders – have risen to the fore. These diseases, all associated with increasing age of an individual, have proven to be remarkably complex and difficult to treat. This is because, in large measure, when the cellular signaling pathways responsible for maintaining homeostasis and health of the body become dysregulated, they generate equally stable disease states. As a result the body may respond positively to a drug, but only for a while and then revert back to the disease state. Cellular Signaling in Health and Disease summarizes our current understanding of these regulatory networks in the healthy and diseased states, showing which molecular components might be prime targets for drug interventions. This is accomplished by presenting models that explain in mechanistic, molecular detail how a particular part of the cellular signaling web operates properly in health and improperly in disease. The stability of the health- and disease-associated states is dynamic and supported by multiple feedback loops acting positively and negatively along with linkages between pathways. During the past few years an ongoing series of important discoveries have been made that advance our understanding of how the body works and may guide us on how to better deal with these diseases. These include the discovery of chronic inflammation as a causal factor in all of these disease classes, the appearance of reactive oxygen species as a messenger molecule that can act both positively and negatively, the propensity of proteins to misfold into aggregation- and disease-prone forms, and the rise of epigenetics including the emergence of small non-coding RNA with important regulatory functions out of the so-called junk RNA. Chapters are devoted to each of these classes of findings with additional details integrated into the chapters dealing directly with the diseases. The connections responsible for maintaining stability are explored in depth.

Download or read book GTPases written by Alan Hall and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GTPases are molecular switches that are used to control biochemical pathways. This book describes the properties and cellular roles of all the major families of GTPases. All cells use GTPases to regulate the delivery of amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis, but eukaryotes, with their complex and compartmentalized environment, have exploited the versatility of GTPases to a much greater extent. In particular, GTPases play a central role in regulating signal transduction pathways activated by extracellular signals and in regulating the trafficking of proteins beetween different organelles. It is not surprising, therefore, that GTPases have become a center of attention for those studying the control of proliferation, differentiation, cell polarity, cell movement, and vesicle and protein trafficking. This book provides a complete guide to this area and should be essential reading for cell and molecular biologists, biochemists and geneticists interested in these contemporary problems.
