Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trenchless technologies are methods used for the construction and rehabilitation of underground utility pipes. These methods are growing increasingly popular due to their versatility and their potential to lower project costs. However, the use of trenchless technologies in Iowa and their effects on surrounding soil and nearby structures has not been adequately documented. Surveys of and interviews with professionals working in trenchless-related industries in Iowa were conducted, and the results were analyzed and compared to survey results from the United States as a whole. The surveys focused on method familiarity, pavement distress observed, reliability of trenchless methods, and future improvements. Results indicate that the frequency of pavement distress or other trenchless-related issues are an ongoing problem in the industry. Inadequate soil information and quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) are partially to blame.

Book excerpt: This Pipe Ramming publication is presented by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), a non-profit educational organization. The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of "NASTT's New Installations Good Practices Training Course" and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Pipe ramming is defined as a trenchless technique used to install open ended steel casings by the hammering action of a percussion hammer. It is an extension of older techniques that use displacement tools to install small-diameter pipes and the application is similar to vertical pile driving. The pipe ramming method provides continuous support of the overburden soil with a steel casing as well as support at the excavation face from the soil that is typically left within the pipe during the ramming process. The method has seen extensive use to install casings for culverts and utilities beneath raised features such as railroad track and roadway embankments. This non-steerable trenchless technology is generally considered to have a low risk of over-excavation related settlement in most ground conditions. All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information. This publication was funded solely by NASTT as part of our educational outreach programing. Since 1990, the all-volunteer members of NASTT have presented non-commercial information about green alternative engineering methods to North American communities and beyond. This book was released on 2011 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benefits of trenchless technology are well understood by all in our industry--more cost-effective and less disruptive to streets, driveways, and landscaping. However, what is often less clear to many engineers and city officials faced with a wide selection of materials and processes is just what type of pipe is best suited for a particular trenchless application. This paper will present the engineering considerations involved in selecting thermoplastic water distribution pipe for directional drilling projects, focusing on assembly considerations, structural and flow performance, pressure-handling capacity, joint integrity, and compatibility with existing systems. These concepts are illustrated by the experiences at the University of Denver, where trenchless technology was successfully utilized on an irrigation system in an area where conventional pipe installation techniques were determined to be unsatisfactory.

Book excerpt: Trenchless technologies, which are methods for installing, rehabilitating and repairing underground utilities with minimum excavation from the ground surface, can significantly reduce the environmental impacts of underground utility works. By minimising surface disruption, traffic congestion is significantly reduced, thereby reducing the generation of air pollution and greenhouse gases. Trenchless technologies can also reduce the amount of wastes generated by decreasing earth and pavement excavation and by utilising existing piping materials.

The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of "NASTT's New Installations Good Practices Training Course" and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Pipe jacking is defined as a cyclical process of simultaneously excavating the ground, removing the spoils, and advancing pipe segments to support the excavation. Pipe jacking is the mechanism to propel the pipe and machine in both open shield pipe jacking machines and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Advancing of pipe segments is achieved using a jacking frame fitted with high-capacity hydraulic jacks that push the pipe from the launch shaft. The jacking frame applies thrust to the jacking pipe and excavating face (shield or MTBM) simultaneously. The actual setup of a jacking frame can vary considerably, depending on the contractor's equipment and the size of the jacking shaft. All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information.
