Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Trench sketches by well-known Irish nationalist MP Major ‘Willie’ Redmond. A memorial volume published after his death at Messines in June 1917 . This is much more than a run-of-the mill account of an officer’s life in the trenches of the Great War. The author of these sketches, Major Redmond, (1861-1917) was a well-known moderate Irish nationalist politician... ‘Willie’ Redmond was himself a nationalist MP, but at the outbreak of the war, although well over military age, he took the view that the war was a fight for all small oppressed nations, and that Irishmen should not stand apart from the struggle. The deaths of women and children in German Zeppelin raids seems to have been the final spur that impelled him to don a British uniform. In his own words ‘If the Germans come here ..they will be our masters, and we at their mercy. What that mercy is likely to be, judge by the mercy shown to Belgium’. Redmond helped found the Irish Division and arrived at the front in the winter of 1915. He saw service on the Somme....One of his favourite themes - and the subject of a chapter in this book - was the brotherhood forged in the trenches between the politically divided Protestants of Northern Ireland and his fellow Catholics from the south. Ironically, it was Protestant stretcher-bearers who brought the severely wounded Redmond in from the battlefield of Messines to the dressing station where he died of his wounds in June 1917 at the opening of the successful British offensive. Much mourned by Irish people of all political and religious beliefs, Redmond left a legacy of political tolerance and self-sacrifice. These sketches, first published in the ‘Daily Chronicle’, cover such subjects as religion in the trenches, the capture of Ginchy on the Somme, No-Man’s Land and pets in the trenches...Will interest not only those keen on Great War literature, but also all students of Irish history.”-Print ed.

I have read with real pleasure the Introduction written by Miss smith-dampier, which shows a sympathetic understanding of my husband's nature and brings out viv idly his personality. I am grateful to Miss smith-dampier for her sympathetic work, and to the Editor of the Daily Chronicle for the interest he has shown in arranging for the publication of my husband's sketches in book form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you wear to Paris? Ami and I discussed it for hours but I still couldn't think of anything suitable. Ami said a trench coat with nothing underneath but your best underwear. That was only if some boy was meeting you at the airport, I said. Eighteen-year-old Lisette has just arrived in Paris (France!) - the city of haute couture and all things stylish - to practise her French and see great works of art. Her clairvoyant landlady Madame Christophe forces her to attend language lessons with a bunch of international students but soon Lise discovers she's more interested in studying boys than art or verbs ... When the undeniably hot Anders jogs into her life it feels too good to be true. Things get even more complicated when she is pursued by Hugo, a charming English antiques dealer. Can she take a chance and follow her own dreams? How far into the future can Madame Christophe see? And could Lise really be falling in love - in Paris?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, illustrated survey of the latest in battlefield archaeology reveals “intimate insight into the realities of life” during WWI (Current Archaeology). Modern methods of archaeological, historical, and forensic research have transformed our understanding of the Great War. In Digging the Trenches, battlefield archaeologists Andrew Robertshaw and David Kenyon introduce the reader to this exciting new field and explore many of the remarkable projects that have been undertaken. Robertshaw and Kenyon show how archaeology can be used to reveal the positions of trenches, dugouts and other battlefield features, as well as what life on the Western Front was really like. They also show how individual soldiers are coming into focus as forensic investigation is so highly developed that individuals can be identified and their fates discovered. “An excellent introduction to the subject…Digging the Trenches is essential reading.”—Gary Sheffield, Military Illustrated “What a splendid book this is.”—Neil Faulkner, Current Archaeology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together new research whilst re-evaluating older assumptions about the immediate and continuing impact of World War I on Ireland. It explores some lesser-known aspects of Ireland’s war years as well as including studies of more traditional areas. Individual articles cover military, social, cultural, political, and economic aspects of the Great War, as well as reflecting on continuity and change within Irish historiography. In doing so, they analyze how the experience and memory of the War have contributed to identity formation and the legitimization of political violence.
