Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Trees: Short Stories HE elm-tree had his field to himself. He stood alone in a wide and deep expanse of wind-swept grass which once a year surged round him in foaming billows crested with the rose of clover and the whiteness of daisies and the gold of buttercups. The rest of the time the field was green with an even slant of lush grass, or else it was a dun sur face, or else a glittering level of snow; but always there stood the tree, with his green branches in the summer, his gold ones in the autumn, his tender. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Trees Every tree is beautiful, every grove is pleasant and every forest is grand. The planting and care of trees is exhilarating and a pledge of faith in the future; but these aesthetic features, though elevating, are incidental. The people need wood. They have had it in abundance and have been prodigal in its use, as we are too often careless of blessings which seem to have no end. Our his tory, poetry, and romance are intimately associated with the woods. Our industries have developed more rapidly because we have had plenty of cheap timber. Millions of acres of bare hillsides that produce nothing profitably should be growing trees. These words of an American statesman are true of other lands as well as of the United States; and it is one of the objects of the present work to draw attention to the individual beauty and interest of each familiar species. In doing this the efforts of the author have been most ably reinforced by. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Since time began, the Shade tree has been the changeless and unfailing friend Of the human race. It has graced earth With its beauty, and to every generation has given freely Of its protective Shelter. Beneath its friendly boughs man has found refuge from the blazing sun and the angry storm. To every human being the shade tree is a bene factor; to every community a blessing and a benediction. Shade-giving is the one thing in which the tree's relations With man have stood unchanged. All other relationships Of tree and man have varied With the ages, for the uses Of Wood have gone through a steady development With the progress of the race. Shade trees alone, among the children of the forest, have been ever constant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Trees: And Elsewhere For the general lavishness and prodigality of my passing mood, betrays their lack of discernment, their defect of taste, and their slight acquaintance with myself. I should much prefer that they would leave my woods and fields untrodden, and not disturb my mountain solitudes with their ignorant and vulgar raptures. The people who really know me and love me seek me oftener at other seasons, when I am more at leisure, and can bid them to a more intimate companionship. They come to understand my finer moods and deeper secrets of beauty; the elusive loveliness which I leave behind me to lure on my true friends through the late autumn, they find and follow with the eye and heart of love; the rare and splendid aspects in which I often discover my presence in midwinter they enjoy all the more because I have with drawn myself from the gaze of the crowd; and the first faint touches of colour and soft breathings of life, which announce my return in the early spring, they greet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Equitable, Rights and Liabilities as to Trees and Woods The Author had occasion, in the early part of the year 1863, to investigate one of the questions discussed in these pages; and he was thus reminded of an opinion, he had long ago entertained, that a collection of the decisions on the subj ect of Timber and Trees, would be interesting and useful. He thought that the leisure of a Chancery Long Vacation in these days a clear three months) would afford ample time for this purpose, and he applied himself then to the task, but found he was greatly mistaken as to its duration. The great amount of trouble; which its prose cution has occasioned to him, confirms his belief, that he will have saved much time to his friends, by bringing together materials so widely scattered, and arranging them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tree Doctor: A Book on Tree Culture HE Americans are a people who love the beautiful, and yet, strange to say, they have destroyed the trees, which are among the grandest objects of all nature. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble e 'orts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and oral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. I desire to keep the book at so that it will be within the reach Of all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Trees It is said that fools build houses and wise men live in them. This is not true of the place where we have now set up our household gods, and in the midst of confusion yet feel already a sense of at-home-ativeness, never enjoyed more completely since the sunny days of childhood. For it was a wise man who chose this spot for his house, and here made for himself a home. His judgment, taste, and skill are seen all over it, and if in this changing world it has finally fallen into our hands, we will not call him unwise, but rather be glad that he was led to make it what it is, that it might be all the more enjoyable for us. It is on the banks of the Hudson. From this rustic seat where I am writing you might throw a stone far into the river. Twenty miles or more of this glorious stream, embracing the whole of Tappan Zee, lie in full view, and from the house some forty or fifty miles of river, forest, and mountains spread themselves continuously at our feet.
