Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 4th International Consultation on Forest Genetics and Tree Building, held in 1998 in Beijing, China, leading scientists were invited to review past achievements, to redefine the role of forest genetics and breeding in contemporary forestry, and to set priorities for future research and development. On the basis of the invited presentations, the volume summarizes the state of knowledge in various fields, such as the impact of forest management and of changing environmental conditions on genetic resources, and the value of genetic markers as indicators for adaptational potential, as well as the tasks of conservation. Detailed reports from the different continents provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the global situation of forest genetics and tree breeding research. The book offers not only an overview of contemporary trends and expected future developments, but also identifies current main problems in funding and cooperation. It may prove therefore useful not only for scientists, university lecturers and advanced students in the field of forestry, ecology and conservation biology, but also for decision makers and managers in companies and conservation organizations.

Book Synopsis Breeding Pest-Resistant Trees by : H. D. Gerhold
Download or read book Breeding Pest-Resistant Trees written by H. D. Gerhold and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding Pest-Resistant Trees documents the proceedings of a N.A.T.O. and N.S.F. Advanced Study Institute on Genetic Improvement For Disease and Insect Resistance of Forest Trees held in Pennsylvania State University from August 30 to September 11, 1964. This book compiles the study and research of geneticists, pathologists, entomologists, and foresters concerned with the genetic resistance of forest trees to pests and breeding programs for disease- and insect-resistant trees. This compilation is divided into three parts. The first part discusses about the résumés of research related to forest tree pest resistance by geographic regions. Part II focuses on the reports of significant research advances in the basic knowledge of disease and insect resistance of forest trees, while Part III includes the discussion of approaches and methods for genetic improvement in pest resistance of forest trees. The topics covered include the variation and inheritance of pest resistance in forest trees; environmental effects on the host-pest relationship; review of basic knowledge of forest tree pest resistance; selection for pest resistance in wild populations; and testing and evaluating inherent pest resistance. This publication is a good source for students and individuals conducting work on the resistance of forest trees to diseases and pest insects.

Book Synopsis Tree Breeding and Improvement Theory and Technology by : K.T. Parthiban
Download or read book Tree Breeding and Improvement Theory and Technology written by K.T. Parthiban and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree Breeding and lmprovement is gaining significant attention and attraction across the country as a scientific tool to enhance the productivity and wood quality besides facilitating conservation of Forest Genetic Resources. The science of Tree Breeding is comparatively young but extended greater scope in the recent past in operational plantation development programme. The Tree Breeding and lmprovement has been incorporated as a subject in Under Graduate as well as Post graduate degree programme in Forestry offered at various State Agricultural Universities of the country. The existing text books on Tree Breeding are very limited and the practical aspects of tree breeding have not been evidenced in most books. The students and the tree breeding scientists require a comprehensive text book incorporating all theoretical and practical aspects of tree breeding. Accordingly the current book entitled “TREE BREEDING AND IMPROVEMENT - THEORY AND TECHNlQUES” has been designed with 18 chapters. The basic and fundamental aspects of tree breeding have been presented in chapter 1. The chapters 2 and 3 elaborate the Center’s of origin and pollination mechanism of trees. The theoretical and practical aspects of tree breeding methods, hybrid development, genetic tests and their biometric analysis have been presented with suitable field level examples from chapter 4 to 9. Incorporation of Seed orchard, clonal forestry, Exotic Forestry and Forest Biotechnology with -the-state-of-art- recent development will find greater utility by the students and researchers. Above all, the chapters on Varietal Developmental Process, Variety Registration and Organizations involved in tree breeding will have profound utility. ln a holistic perspective, the information furnished in the book will act as a great piece of information to the graduating scholars to understand theoretical and practical aspects of tree breeding towards satisfying their academic needs besides applying them in tree breeding research. For the scientists and teaching faculties, the book will act as a ready reckoner not only for reference but also to apply them in all field level applications.
