Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a need to study the anaerobic filter treatment of septic tank effluent, since no such study has been carried out in Canada and this type of treatment offered promise based on a literature review. The objectives of the study were to: 1) evaluate the performance of anaerobic filters operating at 5@c and 10@c, treating septic tank effluent; 2) compare their performance with the anaerobic filter operating at 21@c; 3) examine the relative impacts of accelerated start-up (using seed sludge and operating at approximately 35@c initially) and start-up using approximately field situation (21@c) on start-up period and process performance; and 4) examine the suitability of the system and start-up procedures, for applicability under low temperature situations including locations in northern Canada.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the literature on experimental studies on anaerobic filter treatment of septic tank effluent. The suitability of such a treatment for Canadian conditions is assessed and a conceptual system for use with some cost information is presented. This study indicates that septic tank effluent treatment using an anaerobic filter is practical and generally cost-effective for achieving a much better quality effluent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of water, whether it is used for drinking, irrigation or recreational purposes, is significant for health in both developing and developed countries worldwide. This book is based on a programme of work undertaken by an international group of experts during 1999-2001. The aim was to develop a harmonised framework of effective and affordable guidelines and standards to improve the risk assessment and management of water-related microbial hazards. This book will be useful to all those concerned with issues relating to microbial water quality and health, including environmental and public health scientists, water scientists, policy makers and those responsible for developing standards and regulations.

The fundamentals of anaerobic treatment are presented in detail, including its applicability, microbiology, biochemistry and main reactor configurations. Two reactor types are analysed in more detail, namely anaerobic filters and especially UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) reactors. Particular attention is also devoted to the post-treatment of the effluents from the anaerobic reactors. The book presents in a clear and informative way the main concepts, working principles, expected removal efficiencies, design criteria, design examples, construction aspects and operational guidelines for anaerobic reactors. About the series: The series is based on a highly acclaimed set of best selling textbooks. This international version is comprised by six textbooks giving a state-of-the-art presentation of the science and technology of biological wastewater treatment. Other titles in the series are: Volume 1: Waste Stabilisation Ponds; Volume 2: Basic Principles of Wastewater Treatment; Volume 3: Waste Stabilization Ponds; Volume 5: Activated Sludge and Aerobic Biofilm Reactors; Volume 6: Sludge Treatment and Disposal
