Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective water and energy use in food processing is essential, not least for legislative compliance and cost reduction. This major volume reviews techniques for improvements in the efficiency of water and energy use as well as wastewater treatment in the food industry.Opening chapters provide an overview of key drivers for better management. Part two is concerned with assessing water and energy consumption and designing strategies for their reduction. These include auditing energy and water use, and modelling and optimisation tools for water minimisation. Part three reviews good housekeeping procedures, measurement and process control, and monitoring and intelligent support systems. Part four discusses methods to minimise energy consumption. Chapters focus on improvements in specific processes such as refrigeration, drying and heat recovery. Part five discusses water reuse and wastewater treatment in the food industry. Chapters cover water recycling, disinfection techniques, aerobic and anaerobic systems for treatment of wastewater. The final section concentrates on particular industry sectors including fresh meat and poultry, cereals, sugar, soft drinks, brewing and winemaking. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Handbook of water and energy management in food processing is a standard reference for the food industry. - Provides an overview of key drivers for better management - Reviews techniques for improvements in efficiency of water and energy use and waste water treatment - Examines house keeping proceedures and measurement and process control
Book Synopsis Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal by : Derin Orhon
Download or read book Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal written by Derin Orhon and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-31 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is perhaps the most promising and viable of the proposed activated sludge modifications today for the removal of organic carbon and nutrients. In a relatively short period, it has become increasingly popular for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters, as an effective biological treatment system due to its simplicity and flexibility of operation. Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal has been prepared with the main objective to provide a unified design approach for SBR systems, primarily based on relevant process stoichiometry. Specific emphasis has been placed upon the fact that such a unified design approach is also by nature the determining factor for the selection of the most appropriate cyclic operation scheme, the sequence of necessary phases and filling patterns for the particular application. The proposed basis for design is developed and presented in a stepwise approach to cover both organic carbon and nutrient removal, domestic and industrial wastewaters, strong and specific wastes. The merits of model simulation as an integral complement of process design, along with performance evaluation of SBR models are also emphasized. Scientific and Technical Report No. 19

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report highlights various types of SBRs, design considerations and procedures, equipment required, and experiences gained from practical applications. This report will help both designers and operators of SBRs understand how to use this technology successfully. The focus is on the application of fill-and-draw, variable volume, periodically operated, unsteady-state principles to activated sludge systems. Research findings are presented, from both the laboratory and pilot and full scale SBRs. Also included is a description of trends for technological developments and a discussion of open questions regarding research, development, application, and operation. Download or read book Advanced Biological Treatment Processes written by Lawrence K. Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi?ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci?c pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental en- neering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book Synopsis Treatment of a Combined Wastewater Using a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) by : K. Y. Ng
Download or read book Treatment of a Combined Wastewater Using a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) written by K. Y. Ng and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was used to treat wastewater consisting of domestic and industrial effluents. The SBR system was programed to have a 3-hour FILL without aeration followed by a 1/2 hour REACT in a 6-hour cycle. MLVSS in the reactor was maintained between 1000 and 1500 mg/L. The settled sewage had an average BOD5 of 184, COD of 674 and TSS of 156 mg/L. The BOD5 of the treated effluent averaged 42 mg/L (an average removal rate of 77%), COD 258 mg/L (62%) and TSS 87 mg/L (44%). Although the treated effluent still did not meet the allowable discharge standards of BOD, 20 mg/L and TSS 30 mg/L, the performance of the system was considered good for the 1/2 hour of REACT time. The SBI of 50 suggested good compactibility; however, it did not necessarily suggested good settleability.
