The textile industry is also a major contributor of dye wastewater into the water bodies affecting the water quality in relation to light transmissivity. This study focused on the treatment process of coagulation on a combined mixture of dye and flour wastewater. Synthetic dye and flour wastewater prepared in the laboratory was used and the flour used to prepare the flour wastewater was bought from the grocery store. The treatment was carried out using four different concentrations of wastewater. Using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, the effectiveness of the coagulation process was measured for Transmittance, Absorbance, and total organic carbon (TOC) as indices. It can be concluded that coagulation process is an effective preliminary treatment process for suspended particles, organics, and color removal from industrial effluent.

Book excerpt: Various industries such as textiles, paper, clothing, food etc. uses significant amount of dyes and generates large volumes of effluents which are heavily loaded with pollutants, turbidity and are highly concentrated in salts and color. A significant improvement in effluent quality is required prior to discharging into the water bodies. In the present research work performances of combined process using chemical coagulation and microfiltration were investigated in treating dyes wastewater containing reactive dyes (Disperse Yellow 3, Congo Red, Methylene Blue, Crystal Violet & Pro Indigo). The main objective was the color removal from dye wastewater using stage 1 coagulation process combined with stage 2 microfiltration treatment. Also the objective was to choose appropriate coagulants with appropriate doses for each type of dye. Further objectives were to achieve reductions in the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the dye wastewater. Decolorization and TOC rates were highly dependent on the type of the dye, type of coagulant used and concentration of dye.

Book excerpt: This study shows the treatment of a binary mixture of dye wastewater of varied concentrations and fruit drink wastewater at three different concentrations; low (10 ppm), medium (50 ppm) and high (100 ppm) concentrations. Synthetic dye wastewater prepared in the laboratory was used as a representation of textile wastewater while the fruit drink wastewater was purchased from the grocery store. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used as indices to measure the color removal efficiency of the combined coagulation and microfiltration process. Even though there are modern technologies for color removal till this date, coagulation is one of the most economical alternatives to all technologies present now. In this thesis, the performance of a combined coagulation-microfiltration process for the removal of dyes was studied. After the coagulation-microfiltration process, transmittance values as high as 99.8% were achieved. Color removal efficiency was also investigated for the three coagulants; ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate and ferrous sulfate. Ferric chloride gave the best results in terms of color removal efficiency. Ferrous sulfate gave the worst result in terms of color removal efficiency.

Book excerpt: The water is widely used in process industries, but its use is not always made in a rational way. Due to the growing demand for water by the people and industries, it is necessary to consider the new problem of water supply. Water contamination by organic and inorganic compounds is of great public concern. The textile and sugar industry are the major producers of the wastewater with a varying parameters. Even though there are new technologies for color removal till this date coagulation is seen as the most economical alternative to all technologies present now. In this thesis we study the performance of this two stage filtration with a matrix of dyes and coagulants.Coagulation even though being one the first and most conventional treatments discovered a long time ago is still being used after so many years of research as it qualifies as the most economic primary treatment. Microfiltration is one of the new age technologies which is considered as one of the most efficient technologies at present. This thesis will be aiming at the results of these combined processes. The industrial effluents have a lot of foreign particles which may affect these processes in a positive or a negative way. In such a scenario studying the processes gives us an idea of the treatment behavior in real time. The thesis aims at also studying the effect on the performance of the two filtration processes in presence of sugar. The turbidity and transmittance reading are being taken to assess the performance and the color removal from the aqueous solution of these dyes with sugar.

Book excerpt: Attempts were made in this study to examine the efficiency of Fenton process combined with coagulation for treatment of water-based printing ink wastewater. Parameters affecting the Fenton process, such as pH, dosages of Fenton reagents and the contact time, were determined by using jar test experiments 98 % of turbidity and 54% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 14% of biological oxygen demand (BOD) could be removed at pH 4, 0.8 ml/L H2O2, 25 mg/l FeSO4 and 40 minutes contact time. The coagulation using fenugreek and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) was beneficial to improve the Fenton process treated effluent in reducing the flocssettling time, enhancing turbidity, COD and BOD removal. The overall turbidity,COD and BOD removal reached 99%, 63% and 39.5% under selected conditions, respectively. Thus this study might offer an effective way for wastewater treatment of water-based ink manufacturer and printing corporation.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The use of dyes has become very significant across various industries such as textiles, paper, and clothing. The organic chemical composition of dyes is a major concern when discharging wastewater not only into the environment, but also within wastewater treatment plants. Dye effluent consists of high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and also color, components that require treatment before discharge. As a result, federal legislation has required industries that discharge high components in wastewater to undergo treatment within the plants. Within literature, authors have considered various biological, physical, and chemical methods of treating dye wastewater. Recently, electrocoagulation/electroflotation (ECF) has been an additional method of treatment that has been considered for the treatment of dye wastewater. Two separate studies are considered. First, Acid Yellow 11 (AY11) at a concentration of 25 mg/L (by weight) underwent treatment from three different coagulants (Alum, Ferric Sulfate, and Ferric Chloride), under three different strengths (5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and 15 mg/L), and two different initial pH considerations (4 and 7) for the purpose of analyzing color removal. Following the study, the results were collaborating into a response surface methodology, developing an equation for the three different coagulants. In addition, a Box-Behnken design has been setup for the purpose of considering the effects of pH, dye concentration, dye type, coagulant type and strength on the efficiency of electrocoagulation. These values will be analyzed using statistical analysis, along with toxicity study done on the effectiveness of removing toxic contaminants from the wastewater. Finally, a photo-oxidation study was completed on Acid Orange 7 (AO7) synthetic dye wastewater for the purpose of determining the effects of photo-oxidation based on dye concentration, catalyst type and dose. Langmuir-Hinshelwood coefficients were developed based on the results of this experiment.

Historically, water treatment plants have been designed from hydraulic considerations with little regard to chemical aspects. The many chemical reactions used for removal of pollutants from water simply cannot be forced to occur within current designs. This book re-examines this traditional approach in light of today's water quality and treatment. Will current water treatment processes be sufficient to meet future demands or will new processes have to be devised? Chemistry of Water Treatment assesses the chemical and physical efficacies of current processes to meet the demands of the Safe Drinking water Act, providing expert information to persons responsible for the production of potable water into the next century.

Book excerpt: The production of textile materials comprises a very large and complex global industry that utilises a diverse range of fibre types and creates a variety of textile products. As the great majority of such products are coloured, predominantly using aqueous dyeing processes, the coloration of textiles is a large-scale global business in which complex procedures are used to apply different types of dye to the various types of textile material. The development of such dyeing processes is the result of substantial research activity, undertaken over many decades, into the physico-chemical aspects of dye adsorption and the establishment of ‘dyeing theory’, which seeks to describe the mechanism by which dyes interact with textile fibres. Physico-Chemical Aspects of Textile Coloration provides a comprehensive treatment of the physical chemistry involved in the dyeing of the major types of natural, man-made and synthetic fibres with the principal types of dye. The book covers: fundamental aspects of the physical and chemical structure of both fibres and dyes, together with the structure and properties of water, in relation to dyeing; dyeing as an area of study as well as the terminology employed in dyeing technology and science; contemporary views of intermolecular forces and the nature of the interactions that can occur between dyes and fibres at a molecular level; fundamental principles involved in dyeing theory, as represented by the thermodynamics and kinetics of dye sorption; detailed accounts of the mechanism of dyeing that applies to cotton (and other cellulosic fibres), polyester, polyamide, wool, polyacrylonitrile and silk fibres; non-aqueous dyeing, as represented by the use of air, organic solvents and supercritical CO2 fluid as alternatives to water as application medium. The up-to-date text is supported by a large number of tables, figures and illustrations as well as footnotes and widespread use of references to published work. The book is essential reading for students, teachers, researchers and professionals involved in textile coloration.
