This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity The last words of a book are those which meet the reader's eye first. As that is the case, a preface generally says what the book is meant to be, and in how far the writer's intentions have been realised in the work. Most prefaces are apologies. This work on mental defects and diseases in their legal relations is intended as a practical treatise more complete and systematic than the chapters devoted to this subject in medico-legal text-books, or than those monographs on limited portions of it which have from time to time appeared. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insanity in Its Medico-Legal Relations Even in this enlightened day there are those who sneer at the idea of calling a physician to decide the question of insanity. A person in order to be insane, in their estima tion, must either be a raging maniac, or, at least, be labor ing under an outrageous delusion. They know nothing of the secret workings of the human mind, either in health or disease, and too often think the physician makes crime an evidence of insanity, Simply because they cannot appreciate the unseen evolutions of the mind. Download or read book The Curability of Insanity written by Pliny Earle and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curability of Insanity: A Series of Studies It is now nearly ten years since my essay - "The Curability of Insanity," enlarged from the original in the annual report for the official year 1875-76 of the Northampton Lunatic Hospital - was read before the New England Pyschological Society, and published, by direction of that association, in pamphlet form. Meanwhile, seven other articles upon the same subject have been embodied in my annual reports to the trustees of the aforesaid institution. Those papers have been favorably received by a large number of readers, both at home and abroad. It is not presumptuous to claim that they have greatly modified the aspect of insanity, as a curable mental condition, in the view of a large proportion of the persons most interested in the subject. They have thus been an important agent in stimulating the minds of philanthropists to seek-and in several notable instances to adopt-other methods for the custody and care of a large part of the insane than that of collecting them in expensive and unwieldy curative institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insanity: Its Causes and Prevention It is something more than two years since I read a paper, entitled "The Insane Diathesis," at a meeting of the Connecticut Medical Society. The numerous requests received for copies of that article have led me to think that something more in detail in relation to the prevention of insanity might be desired by the reading public both lay and professional. Hence this little book. It has not been written for specialists exclusively, though it is hoped it will not prove wholly uninteresting to them, but rather for those in the general practice of medicine, educators, and the more intelligent lay members of society. It has been written during odd snatches of time and with many interruptions, so that there exists less uniformity of style than there would otherwise be. Moreover, some of the subjects presented have been discussed by me in papers which have already been published. These papers, however, so far as they have been introduced into this work, have been rewritten, and, it is thought, improved.
