Book excerpt: Eczema is a common chronic skin condition that's difficult to treat using conventional Western treatments. Frequently accompanied by poor results and side effects, these treatments merely address the symptoms and fail to uncover the root cause. In contrast, Chinese medicine offers an effective and proven natural approach by targeting the underlying causes of chronic skin conditions, like eczema. This is the first book written by a Western Chinese medicine practitioner that focuses specifically on TCM eczema (eczema and neurodermatitis) and is a ground-breaking, hands-on guide adopting a modern and practical perspective. This book also contains detailed instructions on external applications such as washes, wet compresses, or ointments. Filled with real-life case studies, practical 'inside' hints, and accompanied by colour photographs, Treating Eczema and Neurodermatitis with Chinese Medicine provides practitioners with invaluable tools for making precise diagnosis and treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records cataloging the healing powers of natural substances - plants, minerals, and animal byproducts - date back more than 4,000 years. There is no denying the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, yet - until recently - the roots of this knowledge were largely lost in superstition and folklore. However, the use of herbs as an alternative medical treatment for many illnesses has increased steadily over the last decade, particularly since such herbs are categorized as "Natural Food Products" and are not yet subject to strict control by the FDA. Reports published in 1996 indicate that more than 10% of the US population has used herbal remedies. This book does not debate the value of Eastern or Western medicine but brings together Chinese herbal lore and Western scientific methods in a current, comprehensive treatise on the pharmacology of Chinese herbs. This second edition of The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs presents the chemical composition, pharmacological action, toxicity, and therapeutic value of 473 herbs. The book: Classifies herbs according to their therapeutic value Informs how active ingredients in herbs may adversely interact with other herbs or drugs Evaluates which herbs have the potential for more investigation and possible use as drugs Describes the pharmacological action of each herb based on recent scientific study and describes each herb according to Chinese pharmacopoeia and folk medicine Provides a review of Chinese medical history Presents information on how to use modern chemical techniques for enhancing or modifying herbal ingredients into better agents with more strength and activity What's New in the Second Edition Discussions on: Herbs and their specific effects on the immune system Herbs and fertility/infertility Anti-cancer herbs Anti-HIV herbs Anti-malarial herbs Ginseng and ginsenosides Anti-Alzheimer herbs Herbs affecting the nervous system

Tacrolimus ointment is the first in the new class of steroid-free Topical Immunomodulators (TIMs), and as such represents the first true breakthrough since the introduction of topical steroids more than 50 years ago for the treatment of T-cell mediated inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis. This book gives an easy-to-read overview of the discovery and the development of Tacrolimus ointment for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Summarising the largest clinical trial program ever conducted in dermatology for a new treatment with more than 13000 patients, it offers a detailed insight into the efficacy and safety profile of Tacrolimus ointment. Based on this large body of data and extensive personal experience, the authors offer practical and hands-on guidance for the physician as to when and how to use Tacrolimus ointment in daily practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, our first book Acupuncture: Textbook and Atlas received rave reviews (e.g., in New England Journal of Medicine). This prompted us to write this smaller, affordable version in order to reach a wider audience. The smaller format has been so successful that we are now into our fourth revised edition. This has given us the opportunity to update and improve the book. For example, nu merous new references to scientific advances have been added. Also the section on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was ad ded because it gives a more complete picture of the current prac tice of acupuncture. Acupuncture has come a long way since our first book in 1987. There has been a surge of interest in treating drug addictions by ear acupuncture in 450 centers world wide. The treatment of nau sea and vomiting has been so well tested (scientifically) that the FDA (USA) is considering making this the major indication for acupuncture in America. Research into its efficacy for neurologi cal and pulmonary diseases is also gaining credibility. No longer is chronic pain the only scientifically acceptable use for acupuncture (based on the endorphin mechanism).
