Book Synopsis Joining forces to deliver improved stroke care by : Jess Hudson
Download or read book Joining forces to deliver improved stroke care written by Jess Hudson and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-03-13 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, stroke was viewed as an inevitable consequence of getting old. For stroke patients there seemed little to be done, except making them more comfortable.Things have begun to change, moving towards better treatment and care for stroke through specialist services and key interventions, such as stroke units, immediate scanning, thrombolysis and Early Supported Discharge. The publication of the NAO report 'Reducing Brain Damage: Faster Access to Better Stroke Care (HC 452)' in November 2005 highlighted how these developments can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of stroke care. As a result, the Department of Health is working to develop a comprehensive national stroke strategy, crossing prevention, urgent care, hospital care, community support and social care. This publication 'Joining Forces to Deliver Improved Stroke Care' sets out recommendations from expert project groups for a new national stroke care strategy, while also examining key messages and examples of good practice arising from the October 2006 'Joining Forces to Deliver Improved Stroke Care' conference hosted by the NAO

This book was released on 2007-04-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Programme for IT in the NHS ("the Programme") was set up to utilise information technology to help provide high quality services to patients, using centrally managed procurement to provide impetus to the uptake of IT and to secure economies of scale. Expenditure on the Programme is expected to be £12.4 billion over ten years to 2013-14. Following a National Audit Office report (HC 1173, session 2005-06, ISBN 9780102938289), the Committee examined progress made by the Department of Health in implementing the Programme, particularly the current status of the shared electronic patient clinical record; the costs of the Programme; the local management and implementation of the systems within the NHS; the extent to which clinicians were involved in developing the systems; the management of suppliers; and patient confidentiality. Four overall conclusions are drawn: (1) the piloting and deployment of the shared electronic patient clinical record is already running two years behind schedule and no firm implementation date exists; (2) the suppliers to the Programme are clearly struggling to deliver (one of the largest, Accenture, has now withdrawn), and the Department is unlikely to complete the Programme anywhere near its original schedule; (3) the Department has much still to do to win hearts and minds in the NHS, especially among clinicians, and needs to show that it can deliver on its promises, supply solutions that are fit for purpose, learn from its mistakes, and respond constructively to feedback from users in the NHS; (4) there is still much uncertainty about the costs of the Programme for the local NHS and the value of the benefits it should achieve.

Book Synopsis Improving Patient Care by Reducing the Risk of Hospital Acquired Infection by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts
Download or read book Improving Patient Care by Reducing the Risk of Hospital Acquired Infection written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best available estimates suggest that annually there are at least 300,000 cases of hospital acquired infection, causing 5,000 deaths and costing the NHS £1 billion. This report follows on from a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General ( HC 876 2003-04, ISBN 0102929157) and examines the progress made by the Department of Health and NHS trusts in reducing the risks. It looks at three main areas: the extent and impact of hospital acquired infection; improving knowledge of and compliance with good infection control practice; improving infection control systems and management processes. The conclusion is that progress has been patchy, with a lack of urgency on several key issues such as ward cleanliness and hand hygiene. Progress has also been hampered by a lack of data, a national mandatory surveillance programme and evidence of the effectiveness of different intervention strategies

Download or read book Ministry of Defence written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to deploy troops in key military operations at short notice, the Ministry of Defence employs a system known as the Urgent Operational Requirements. The purpose of this method is to provide speedy and flexible procurement of capabilities, and it has been a major feature of UK recent military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Following on from an NAO report (HCP 1161, session 2003-04, ISBN 0102930589) published in November 2004, the Committee's report focuses on three main issues: the importance of identifying and costing likely Urgent Operational Requirements; improvements to the way the MoD captures data on the process and outcomes, and the scope to apply lessons from Urgent Operational Requirements to the regular procurement programme.
