Book Synopsis Recognizing Reality by : Georges B. J. Dreyfus
Download or read book Recognizing Reality written by Georges B. J. Dreyfus and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreyfus examines the central ideas of Dharmakīrti, one of the most important Indian Buddhist philosophers, and their reception among Tibetan thinkers. During the golden age of ancient Indian civilization, Dharmakīrti articulated and defended Buddhist philosophical principles. He did so more systematically than anyone before his time (the seventh century CE) and was followed by a rich tradition of profound thinkers in India and Tibet. This work presents a detailed picture of this Buddhist tradition and its relevance to the history of human ideas. Its perspective is mostly philosophical, but it also uses historical considerations as they relate to the evolution of ideas.

Book Synopsis Metals and Monies in an Emerging Global Economy by : Arturo Giráldez
Download or read book Metals and Monies in an Emerging Global Economy written by Arturo Giráldez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on early-modern monetary history is vast and rich, yet overly Eurocentric. This book takes a global approach. It calls attention to the fact that, for example, Japan and South America were dominant in silver production, while China was the principal end-market; key areas for transshipment included Europe and Africa, India and the Middle East. Europeans were often just middlemen. Other monetized substances - gold, copper and cowries - must also be viewed globally. The interrelated trades in metals and monies are what first linked worldwide markets, and disequilibrium within the silver market in the 16th and 17th centuries was an active cause of this global trade.
Download or read book Beyond Price written by R. A. Donkin and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1998 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has been intrigued by the origin of pearls, sensitive to their beauty, and convinced of their medicinal value for at least 5 cent. A mixture of folklore and observation preceded the earliest scientific inquiries. Fishing and trade commenced in S. Asia, between India and Sri Lanka and around the Persian Gulf. In W. and Central Europe, Inner Asia and China, and N. Amer. Freshwater pearls were probably known and treasured before those of marine origin. A refined nomenclature points to a long familiarity with etymologically related words for 'pearl'. Pearls were prominent among the luxury products of world trade and were high among the objectives of expeditions to the eastern and western Tropics. Illustrations.
