Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during WWI, ‘Our Sea’ (or ‘Mare Nostrum’) is a moving romance by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Working as a secret agent for the Nazis, Freya Talberg makes a potentially fatal mistake when she falls in love with a Spanish sea captain, but will love conquer all in the end? Full of passion, adventure, tragedy, and betrayal, this is a gripping love story and coming of age tale from the famous author. The story was turned into a Hollywood silent film of the same name in 1926. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928) was a Spanish journalist, novelist, and politician. Born in Valencia, Ibáñez was a militant Republican in his youth and made many enemies – on one occasion being shot at and almost killed. He was the founder of the republican newspaper El Pueblo and spent time in prison during 1896. Author of over 30 works, Ibáñez’s writing caught the attention of Hollywood and many of his novels went on to become celebrated films, including ‘Sangre y Arena’ (Blood and Sand), ‘Los Cuatro Jinetes del Apocalipsis’ (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) and spy story ‘Mare Nostrum’. Ibáñez died in France in 1928 and is buried in Valencia.

Book excerpt: Idol is about a brilliant schizophrenic serial killer, Steven Wently, whose sensational murders of famous false idols receive universal publicity and public support. Wently imagines that the cumulative weight of revelations of crimes committed by false idols after their deaths will destroy humankinds faith in its heroes. He further reasons that such exposures will cast shadows over legitimacy of promises of mans immortality made by religious heroes like Christ, Hindu deities, and Muhammad. The result of civilizations loss of faith in its heroes and immortality will cause the collapse of civilization, Wently believes. He uses his wifes enormous wealth and her familys vast network of contacts to identify famous false heroes and create extensive dossiers of their crimes. As his alter ego, Idol, Wently tries, and executes these Pretenders, thereby destroying their mythical reputations before they die. His victims are varied a prime candidate to replace the Pope, a U.S. Senator, a famous composer, a highly successful investment banker, a Supreme Court Justice, a former U.S. president, a United Nations Secretary General, etc. Over time, Wently builds an extensive organization to carry out his exterminations, a movement that becomes known as Idolism. Idolism attracts worldwide acclaim of millions, confounding government. Government, fearing that Idolism is unstoppable, takes steps to eliminate it, led by an utterly evil, maniacal assassin. Idol, like Budds most recent thriller, Life Support, is an exciting amalgam of inventive plotting, extraordinary characters, spellbinding terror and edgy wit, and blurs lines between good and evil.

Upon returning to England, Theodore meets clockmaker Drosselmeyer, who hires him as an apprentice, much to Clara's dismay. Book Synopsis Demographic Engineering: Population Strategies in Ethnic Conflict by : Paul Morland
Download or read book Demographic Engineering: Population Strategies in Ethnic Conflict written by Paul Morland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography has always mattered in conflict, but with conflict increasingly of an inter-ethnic nature, with sharper demographic differences between ethnic groups and with the spread of democracy, numbers count in conflict now more than ever. This book argues for and develops a framework for demographic engineering which provides a fresh perspective for looking at political events in countries where ethnicity matters. It asks how policies have been framed and implemented to change the demography of ethnic groups on the ground in their own interests. It also examines how successful these policies have been, focusing on the cases of Sri Lanka, Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland and the USA. Often these policies are hidden but author Paul Morland teases them out with skill both from the statistics and documentary records and through conversations with participants. Offering a new way of thinking about demographic engineering (’hard demography’ versus ’soft demography’) and how ethnic groups in conflict deploy demographic strategies, this book will have a broad appeal to demographers, geographers and political scientists.

Book Synopsis Wounds of the Spirit by : Traci C. West
Download or read book Wounds of the Spirit written by Traci C. West and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of first-person accounts documenting a historical legacy of violence against black women in the U.S. In Wounds of the Spirit, Traci West employs first person accounts-from slave narratives to contemporary interviews to Tina Turner's autobiography-to document a historical legacy of violence against black women in the United States. West, a black feminist Christian ethicist, situates spiritual matters within a discussion of the psycho-social impact of intimate assault against African American women. Distinctive for its treatment of the role of the church in response to violence against African American women, the book identifies specific social mechanisms which contribute to the reproduction of intimate violence. West insists that cultural beliefs as well as institutional practices must be altered if we are to combat the reproduction of violence, and suggests methods of resistance which can be utilized by victim-survivors, those in the helping professions, and the church. Interrogating the dynamics of black women's experiences of emotional and spiritual trauma through the diverse disciplines of psychology, sociology, and theology, this important work will be of interest and practical use to those in women's studies, African American studies, Christian ethics, feminist and womanist theology, women's health, family counseling, and pastoral care.
