Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels at Home and Abroad, Vol. 1: The First Trip to Jamaica; The San Francisco Fire Trip; The Mexican Trip The accounts of travel that are contained in these volumes were written with no thought of their publication. Therefore the author occasionally may have made use of some thought suggested by a railroad folder or by a guide book, and it is even possible that the text of more than one passage has followed quite closely one of these sources of informa tion. The earlier chapters were written a good many years ago, and the folders and guide books that are used have long since gone out of existence. It is now impossible to give credit where credit may be due. But the au thor wishes to disclaim any wilful plagiarism of word or of thought. E. Q. S. Book Synopsis Irish Cultures of Travel by : Raphaël Ingelbien
Download or read book Irish Cultures of Travel written by Raphaël Ingelbien and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses travel texts aimed at the emergent Irish middle classes in the long nineteenth century. Unlike travel writing about Ireland, Irish travel writing about foreign spaces has been under-researched. Drawing on a wide range of neglected material and focusing on selected European destinations, this study draws out the distinctive features of an Irish corpus that often subverts dominant trends in Anglo-Saxon travel writing. As it charts Irish participation in a new ‘mass’ tourism, it shows how that participation led to heated ideological debates in Victorian and Edwardian Irish print culture. Those debates culminate in James Joyce’s ‘The Dead’, which is here re-read through new discursive contextualizations. This book sheds new light on middle-class culture in pre-independence Ireland, and on Ireland’s relation to Europe. The methodology used to define its Irish corpus also makes innovative contributions to the study of travel writing.
Download or read book Mind the Gap written by Nina Namaste and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education needs a new, holistic assessment of global learning. The studies in this edited volume investigate not just student learning, but also faculty experiences, program structures, and pathways that impact global learning. Showcasing recent, multi-institutional research related to global learning, this book expands the context of global learning to show its antecedents and impacts as a part of the larger higher education experience. Chapters look at recent developments such as short-term, off-campus, international study and certificate/medallion programs, as well as blended learning environments and undergraduate research, all in the context of multi-institutional comparisons. Global learning is also situated in a larger university context. Thus, there is a growing need for bridging across disciplinary and administrative silos, silos that are culturally bound within academia. The gaps between these silos matter as students seek to integrate off- and on-campus learning, and it is up to the academy to mind those gaps.

Book excerpt: Admirers of The Spanish Temper, Marching Spain and his wonderfully evocative books on London, Dublin and New York will need no reminding that V.S. Pritchett is one of the very great travel writers of our time, possessed of an astonishingly accurate eye and a marvellous ability to conjure up the essence of a place, and of the people who live there. Written for the most part in the 1950s and 1960s, the essays brought together in At Home and Abroad cover South and North America, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, London, Greece, the Pyrenees, Germany, the English countryside and, above all, the Mediterranean: first published in book form in 1990, the year of Sir Victor's ninetieth birthday, they are a delight in themselves and a timely reminder of - or introduction to - this most subtle and perceptive of writers.
