Book excerpt: Culture, politics, education, religion, flora, fauna, and vivid descriptions of many exotic landscapes are explored with a large dash of humor as the author takes us along for a fascinating tour of twelve countries that have been a vital part of his life and career. Starting in India in 1984 with the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the author ignores the usual "tour" theme and concentrates on people and events that provide substantive meaning and a place in history. In the Sudan, the Sharia legal system comes alive in a Moslem country. We have a front row seat as the author describes fundamental changes in Kenya where he served as American Ambassador. In Niger, he joined his wife, Patti, where she was assigned as an arts and crafts consultant at the National Museum. As a consultant to the Executive Service Corps, Mr. Ferguson prepared a definitive plan to launch a new university in Uruguay. In China, as a member of the first accredited bird-watching excursion, he watched the throbbing culture of the rural areas. He enjoyed the flora and fauna in the rain forests of Costa Rico, the mountains and coasts of the South Island in New Zealand, and the rare Orangutans in the independent country of Sabah in northern Borneo. In a short visit to Hungary, as the former President of Radio Free Europe--Radio Liberty, he experienced the impact of lifting the Iron Curtain. After a gap of forty years, he author absorbs the remarkable changes in Bangkok, Thailand where he directed the exciting Peace Corps program. In the exciting last chapter, he brings to life the snow capped Himalaya Mountains and the beautiful valleys of culturally exciting Bhutan. Come along. You'll enjoy the trip and acquire an enhanced understanding of the complex world in which we live and enjoy a few laughs along the way. GLENN FERGUSON served as President of four universities (Long Island, Clark, Connecticut, and the American University of Paris); Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Munich; Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and President and founder of Equity for Africa. He was an Associate Director of the Peace Corps in Washington, and the first Director in Thailand. He was also the first Director of Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA); American Ambassador to Kenya (Arthur Flemming Award); and a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. As an Air Force Psychological Warfare Officer, he served in Korea and the Philippines. Since his retirement, Ambassador Ferguson, and his wife Patti, have resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he has written five books relating to travel, religion, essays, aphorism and sports. He received two degrees from Cornell University and a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying exotic travel writing in Europe from late antiquity to the age of discover, The Witness and the Other World illustrates the fundamental human desire to change places, if only in the imagination.Mary B. Campbell looks at works by pilgrims, crusaders, merchants, discoverers, even armchair fantasists such as Mandeville, as well as the writings of Marco Polo, Columbus, and Walter Raleigh. According to Campbell, these travel accounts are exotic because they bear witness to alienated experiences; European travelers, while claiming to relate fact, were often passing on monstrous projections. She contends that their writing not only documented but also made possible the conquest of the peoples whom she travelers described, and she shows how travel literature contributed to the genesis of the modern novel and the modern life sciences.

Let me introduce you to dozens of people to meet along the way, as you gain personal insights cultures, customs, and hints about the incredible changes taking place inside yourself from this type of exposure. The icing on the cake is the compelling photographs that take you through the daily life of an unfamiliar culture. A travel experience starts with the place and the sights to see. What you bring back in your treasure chest of memories will be experiences with people you meet along the way. I will hold your hand while you see, taste, smell and breathe the life of the people. This is not a show and tell guidebook to suggest where to go and what to do. It will open your eyes and tempt your tongue, as you taste traditional Moroccan bisteeya (a delectable three-layer sweet pie wrapped in the thinnest of pastries and eaten with three fingers). Your exposure to more traditional customs may cause you to change your lifestyle. After this safe, vicarious trip at my side, you will be packing for your second. Whether you need inspiration, without venturing away from your known comforts to fill those gaps of discontentment, or you dare to let your imagination run free in exploring the world around you, you will want to keep "100 People" at your bedside or in your reading bag for your next flight. Jackie Chase has more than four decades of travel experience in and out of over one hundred countries. She has lived temporarily with remote tribal people in the populated continents of the earth and has written several books in this photo-journalism series about cultures, plus a Traveler's Handbook that won a Royal Palm Literary Award.

Book excerpt: Let us take you on an exotic travel adventure. This book is your passport to destinations that are among the most remote on the planet. And all the stories are true. Imagine what it would be like to have your face painted by a headhunter. What would go through your mind as you caught a live alligator with your bare hands? How could you resist swimming with sea lions who could mimic almost all of your maneuvers? What would it be like to share in the discovery of a nineteenth century shipwreck off a deserted island? You will experience all of this and more as you accompany us through this book. We followed a routine for each trip. Long before we boarded our ship or plane we spent weeks devouring information about the places we would be seeing. Then during the trip we took copious notes. Upon our return we combined the knowledge we had gained, the photos, souvenirs and videos with our original studies. Only then did I begin writing and Marcia begin typing. We sent our stories to many friends and relatives who graciously seemed to welcome them. There are many expedition travel agencies but only three we can recommend from first-hand knowledge. Abercrombie and Kent, Society Expeditions, and Zegrahm all somehow combined the risk of adventure with the safety net of security that made us feel at home anywhere. We gained so much from our adventures. Although we can recall the wonderful, awesome experiences, we are aware of some shadows too. We saw how the rainforests are diminishing, species becoming extinct, and populations growing at an alarming rate. We are keenly aware of changes in the ozone layer over the South Pole and quixotic weather patterns. El nino no longer occurs only once every twenty-two years. The warming of the planet is not a debatable topic to us. More than anything else, however, we savor the richness of these expeditions like a giant tapestry of sights and sounds and feelings a richness which we will cherish for all time. We hope you will too!

Book excerpt: In 2011, Joyce & Daryle were approaching 40 and had been married for almost ten years. From the day they met, they'd been talking about "travelling more", but in ten years they hadn't advanced very far toward that dream and it had become more of a nagging dissatisfaction than an inspiring goal. Every time they returned from one of their brief yearly vacations, Joyce would spend weeks depressed, thinking there had to be a way to do more than this. They gradually came to the somewhat obvious realization that "travelling more" wasn't just going to happen, they would need to decide what exactly they wanted, make a plan and commit to a lot of work. In early 2012, they made a decision to go all in on their travel dream, sell everything, and hit the road for an open-ended period of time.On March 31, 2013, they locked up their house one last time and left on a tour that would take them to 23 countries and 23 U.S. states over the next 14 months. This book is the chronicle of the first six months, spent in Central America and Africa, as they learned to slow down, look around and embrace wherever the heck they were. Alternately funny, frustrating and inspiring, their journey proves that anyone can travel more and that you don't have to be rich, young or all that brave to get out and see the world.
