Book excerpt: A new edition of the only stand-alone guidebook on Haiti available, fully updated and with expanded content reflecting Haiti’s recent tourism expansion, and packed with practical information covering everything from accommodation, eateries and travel routes to wildlife and ‘Vodou’. A comprehensive section on birdwatching and insightful information on Haiti's rich artistic and musical heritage ensure birdwatchers and cultural enthusiasts are well catered for. Paul Clammer discusses the medicinal merits of Haitian rum, how to catch a Port-au-Prince taptap (bus) and how to check into the Graham Greene suite of the Hotel Oloffson. This new edition includes even more information on living in Haiti, more festivals – from local fêtes to big celebrations – and coverage of new tourism developments at the Citadelle, Haiti’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also covered are details of other new museums either under refurbishment or soon to open. Sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, Haiti is culturally the most African of Caribbean countries, and one that is largely unknown to visitors, except through popular clichés of aid dependency and Vodou culture. An early pioneer of Caribbean tourism, since the earthquake of 2010 it has been slowly repositioning itself as an exciting new travel destination. Visitors will find historical sites to explore, such as the World Heritage-listed Citadelle (the largest fortress in the Americas), hidden beaches, and a proud people rebuilding their country and ready to welcome visitors once more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology spanning six decades of on-the-scene journalism from “one of the most eloquent witnesses of the twentieth century” (Bill Buford, Granta). For nearly sixty years, Martha Gellhorn traveled the globe to report on the tumult and extremity of life in the twentieth century. The View from the Ground, as Gellhorn explains, “is a selection of articles written during six decades; peace-time reporting. That is to say, the countries in the background were at peace at the moment of writing; not that there was peace on earth.” Included here are accounts of America during the Depression, Israel and Palestine in the 1950s, post-Franco Spain, protests at the White House, domestic life in Africa, and Gellhorn’s return to Cuba after a forty-one-year absence—among many other topics. Informed by the horrors of fascism in Spain and Germany, the modern terror in Central America, and by the courage of those who stand up to the thugs both in an out of government, The View from the Ground is a singular act of testimony that, like its companion volume, The Face of War, is “an eloquent, unforgettable history of a chaotic century” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Book excerpt: It’s not magic, it’s craft Most writing advice is designed to help you get from an idea to a finished draft, focusing on general principles and conventional wisdom that can flatten out creative storytelling and unique voices. In Novel Study, Kristen Tate delves into the techniques used by today’s most successful novelists and translates them into practical tools you can use in your own work. Through close reading and structural analysis of examples from a diverse range of contemporary novelists—including Ann Patchett, N.K. Jemisin, Tana French, Casey McQuiston, and Rebecca Roanhorse—Novel Study addresses common challenges faced by fiction writers: How to write a captivating opening chapter How to maximize plot suspense How to effectively manage multiple point-of-view characters How to create immersive settings and authentic dialogue How to craft sentences that resonate Each chapter begins with a key question and ends with concrete takeaways you can immediately apply to your writing. Novel Study includes nine full-color charts and graphs that illustrate many of the techniques discussed. You’ll be able to see at a glance how successful novelists structure their narratives, manage chronology, and balance different elements of their storytelling. Beyond insights and techniques, Novel Study offers tips and templates to help you build your own Novel Study files, tailored to the works and authors you admire. There isn’t a single way to tell a successful story. There is no secret formula or magic template that will make it easy to write a novel. But the right tools can unlock your creativity and lead to a manuscript that surprises you and delights your readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Humanitarian Affairs Reader is a compilation of the most important chapters in the ten volume series published on this topic by Fordham University Press. Each chapter selected has been edited to delete dated material; where appropriate, chapters will have a brief addendum to present current information. The Series Editor, Kevin M. Cahill M.D., will write a substantial introductory essay explaining the academic evolution of the discipline of international humanitarian assistance. It will focus on the "Fordham Experience"--its Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) has developed practical programs for training field workers, especially those dealing with complex emergencies following conflicts, man-made or natural disasters. The book series has been as essential part of this effort. The new International Humanitarian Affairs Reader will be divided into seven sections, each introduced by a "link" page providing continuity for the text. There will be extensive appendices to assist in finding basic acronyms, abbreviations, important conventions, treaties and accepted standards. One appendix will also provide the full table of contents for each volume in the series, and all chapters are available for digital download. The International Humanitarian Affairs Reader, scheduled for publication in Spring 2013, should provide the growing number of people--both within and outside academia--with a better understanding of the multi-faceted demands posed by humanitarian assistance programs. At Fordham University there are programs at both the undergraduate (Minor) and graduate (Masters) levels. Fordham's innovative, very intense, one-month residential course for experienced humanitarian workers--the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA)--is recognized worldwide. The Institute now has over 2000 graduates from 133 nations. Contributors to The International Humanitarian Affairs Reader include many of the leading figures in international diplomacy, relief and refugee operations, conflict resolution and reconciliation, and transition from disaster to stability and development, from the chaos of war to peace.
