Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains much value to those who expect to follow the business of catching wolves and coyotes. For while there are certain wild animals which when hard pressed by severe cold and hunger, will raid the farmers and ranchmen's yards, killing fowls and stock, none will destroy so much stock as wolves and coyotes as they largely live upon the property of farmers, settlers and ranchmen to which they add game as they can get it. While these animals are trapped, shot, poisoned, hunted with dogs, etc., their numbers, in some states, seem to be on the increase rather than the decrease in face of the fact that heavy bounties are offered. The fact that wolf and coyote scalps command a bounty, in many states, and in addition their pelts are valuable, makes the hunting and trapping of these animals of no little importance. One thing that has helped to keep the members of these "howlers" so numerous is the fact that they are among the shrewdest animals in America.

I began trapping at a very early age, the same as many boys do who live out in the country where they have an opportunity. My father owned a grist mill and a sawmill. These mills were about one-half mile apart and it was about these mills and along the mill races and ponds of these mills that I set my first traps for muskrats, mink and coon. Before I was stout enough to set a trap which was strong enough to hold the varmint, it was necessary for me to get some older person to set the trap. I would take the trap to the intended place and set for the particular animals I was in quest of, whether mink, coon or rat. In those days clearings were small, woods large and full of game. Deer could be seen in bunches every morning in the fields and it was not uncommon to see a bear's track near the house that had been made during the night. Wolves were not plenty though it was a common thing to see their tracks and sometimes hear them howl on the hills.

Book excerpt: Strategies for Today's Small Game Generation Whether it's waiting out a fox squirrel in a northeastern Ohio hickory grove, calling from a midnight stand for red fox, or anticipating the whirlwind flush of a ruffled grouse, nothing challenges the hunter nor hones the skills quite like the pursuit of North America's small game species. In his latest book, Successful Small Game Hunting, M.D. Johnson helps rekindle the flame that sparked the desire to hunt. With new twists on age-old outdoor ideas and just enough nostalgia to remind you that small game hunting is "where it all began," Johnson revisits the species and the techniques that have helped make small game hunting the grand pastime that it is. Wonderfully illustrated with outstanding images by award-winning photographer, Julia Johnson, Successful Small Game Hunting follows in the footsteps of Johnson's other titles - Successful Duck Hunting and Successful Turkey Hunting - by putting you right into the middle of the action with some of the finest small game hunters and trappers in the nation. Recapture the thrill of your first hunt as M.D. Johnson and friends guide you through the woodlots and uplands, the marshes and the fields in search of small game.
