Book excerpt: The research involved the theoretical and numerical analysis of the physics of free electron lasers using relativistic particle beams. The major emphasis of the research was to obtain design criteria for the development of a two-stage FEL oscillator operating in the trapped particle mode. The present work was centered on the development of a fully relativistic, nonlinear analysis of the spatial and temporal evolution of multiple modes within a free electron laser oscillator and of a large amplitude, nonlinearly saturated state characteristic of trapped particle mode operation. The equations solved are the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics coupled with the collisionless Boltzmann equation that describes collisionless particles under influence of the electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic fields include the radiation fields from the FEL and the self-electric fields from the longitudinal potential due to the space charge, i.e., the dominant component of the interparticle Coulomb forces. The particle dynamics transverse to the magnetic axis are included, but gradients in the radiation fields are ignored. The electron beam equilibrium is assumed to be spatially uniform and temporally stationary. Justification and probable impact of further approximations are discussed in the technical section of this report. The approximations employed are consistent with the purpose of obtaining experimentally implementable design criteria for the FEL oscillator. (rh).

Book excerpt: This paper reviews the basic characteristics of free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators, and describes a group of codes that have been developed to analyze and design rf-linac-driven FELs. The optical performance of an FEL has been treated using 1-D time-dependent (finite pulse) codes that describe the characteristics of the optical temporal pulse shape and spectrum during the evolution of the oscillator from, low-intensity small-signal gain conditions to high-intensity large-signal gain conditions. These codes can include frequency-dependent elements, such as narrow-band filters or grating rhombs. Diffraction effects, transverse optical and electron-beam mode properties, misalignments, as well as aberrations on optical elements are modeled with the 3-D code FELEX. This code has now been extended to include effects of imperfections in the wiggler magnetic field and light emission at higher optical harmonics. A separate accelerator modeling capability allows the use of a numerically-generated electron pulse in FELEX for 3-D integrated numerical FEL simulations. 26 refs., 10 figs.

The resulting integrodifferential equation includes the effects of linear optical system losses (due to either mirror reflectivity or clipping), the usual small signal gain term, and a quadratic nonlinear term that includes the effects of saturation and coupling to sideband modes. The effects of detuning and particle beam current and energy variations can easily be included. Results of numerical solutions of the equations for various conditions will be presented. 3 refs., 4 figs.
