Download or read book Data Sharing and Data Partnerships for Highways written by Kevin E. Heanue and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to DOT administrators, supervisors, and staff, as well as to the consultants that work with them. Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) regional and local agency staffs might also find it informative. The synthesis was initiated in response to a recommendation made during the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) Reassessment, which was undertaken by the FHWA in 1997/1998 to expand data sharing and partnering more widely among states, MPOs, and local governments. It documents current arrangements among state DOTs, MPOs, and other local and regional agencies to partner in the collection and share in the use of HPMS data. Key elements examined include institutional arrangements, the use of data and data sharing, cost and resource requirements, technical capabilities/barriers, implementation processes, and data quality and capability, as well as successes, failures, and difficulties. Case studies of successful state and MPO partnerships are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation Statistics Annual Report is a summary of the state of the transportation system and its consequences, the quality of statistics used to characterize the transportation system, and planned efforts by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) to improve the quality of the statistics. BTS was established by Congress to compile, analyze, and make accessible information on the nation's transportation system; to collect information on intermodal transportation and other related areas as needed; and to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the Department of Transportation's statistical programs through research, the development of guidelines, and the promotion of improvements in data acquisition and use.

Book Synopsis Managing Space Radiation Risk in the New Era of Space Exploration by : National Research Council
Download or read book Managing Space Radiation Risk in the New Era of Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE), NASA is planning for humans to revisit the Moon and someday go to Mars. An important consideration in this effort is protection against the exposure to space radiation. That radiation might result in severe long-term health consequences for astronauts on such missions if they are not adequately shielded. To help with these concerns, NASA asked the NRC to further the understanding of the risks of space radiation, to evaluate radiation shielding requirements, and recommend a strategic plan for developing appropriate mitigation capabilities. This book presents an assessment of current knowledge of the radiation environment; an examination of the effects of radiation on biological systems and mission equipment; an analysis of current plans for radiation protection; and a strategy for mitigating the risks to VSE astronauts.
Book Synopsis Performance Measures and a Framework for Decison-making Under the National Transportation System by : Ned Codd
Download or read book Performance Measures and a Framework for Decison-making Under the National Transportation System written by Ned Codd and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) requires the development of a National Intermodal Transportation System, commonly referred to as the National Transportation System (NTS). The primary goals of the NTS are to monitor the nation's transportation network, in all modes and for freight as well as passengers, and to support national transportation planning and policy that maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the network. To these ends, the NTS must assess the transportation network based on its performance, regardless of mode. The NTS must have as its basis a set of measures applicable to different modes that reflects the varied goals of ISTEA in the areas of mobility, environmental, social, and economic performance. This report proposes performance measures for the NTS, as well as a decision-making framework for using them. Further, it provides background on the environment in which these performance measures will be used by examining the ISTEA legislation, the NTS initiative, and potential data sources for supporting these performance measures.
Book Synopsis Performance Measures, Data Acquisition and Performance Evaluation Under the National Transportation System by : Ned Codd
Download or read book Performance Measures, Data Acquisition and Performance Evaluation Under the National Transportation System written by Ned Codd and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Transportation System (NTS), an outgrowth of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), is proposed in this research as an analytical tool to guide national transportation policy making. The NTS must be based upon measures of transportation performance that are intermodal, user oriented, and suitable for tracking the environmental, social, and economic outcomes of transportation system use. A set of such performance measures is proposed, and implications of the measures for various modes are discussed. This proposal and discussion of performance measures is the critical component of this report. A major concern in the implementation of these performance measures is the data that supports them. A great deal of data is required to track the performance of the basic components of NTS analysis: major transportation facilities and regional transportation systems. Appropriate data sources for the NTS performance measures are identified, a sample of demonstration data is applied to the performance measures, and problems with data acquisition and application are discussed. A general framework for using the performance measures to achieve the NTS policy objective is proposed, and the implications of geographic information systems (GIS) and other technologies are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations from this research are presented.
