Book excerpt: This digest summarizes key findings of research performed under NCHRP Project 20-65, Task 42, Rural Public Transportation Strategies for Responding to the Livable and Sustainable Communities Initiative, by ICF International. For the study, ICF conducted a nationwide survey of state departments of transportation (DOTs) and their rural livability activities; conducted follow-up interviews about grants from the Partnership for Sustainable Communities (PSC); and created a primer highlighting strategies that state DOTs, transit operators, and their partners can use to help rural organizations applying for discretionary grant programs. The strategies discussed in the primer are: (1) Building awareness of PSC resources and livability in rural communities; (2) Providing programmatic and financial support; (3) Creating statewide or regional partnerships; and (4) Encouraging transit coordination at the regional level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities across North America are facing difficult questions about automobile use and transportation. Lack of land for new parking lots and the desire to preserve air quality are but a few of the factors leading institutions toward a new vision based upon expanded transit access, better bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and incentives that encourage less driving. Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities presents a comprehensive examination of techniques available to manage transportation in campus communities. Authors Will Toor and Spenser W. Havlick give readers the understanding they need to develop alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles, and sets forth a series of case studies that show how transportation demand management programs have worked in a variety of campus communities, ranging from small towns to large cities. The case studies in Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities highlight what works and what doesn't, as well as describing the programmatic and financial aspects involved. No other book has surveyed the topic and produced viable options for reducing the parking, pollution, land use, and traffic problems that are created by an over-reliance on automobiles by students, faculty, and staff. Transportation and Sustainable Campus Communities is a unique source of information and ideas for anyone concerned with transportation planning and related issues.

These collected stories - all connected to transit - describe relationship and community, analyze equity and dignity, and suggest action through policy and practice. This volume represents a story of leadership for social justice and peacebuilding told through narrative constructed by students in a Justice and Peace Studies course, in collaboration with the Sustainable Communities Partnership at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota, USA), and with community partner Metro Transit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Denver Region has received national recognition for its ambitious FasTracks program, which will provide a network of eight rail corridors, along with a freeway bus rapid transit corridor, throughout the urbanized area. A key focus of the project was an evaluation of the current state of planning and development along four existing rail transit corridors operated by the Regional Transportation District -- Central, Southwest, Southeast, and West. The project organized information around themes: (1) housing, (2) accessibility, (3) jobs and economic development, and (4) site development. Using the findings from the research efforts, the study team developed a detailed set of evidence-based recommendations and action steps to help communities and the region evolve vibrant and healthy communities around transit stations.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Communities and the Challenge of Environmental Justice by : Julian Agyeman
Download or read book Sustainable Communities and the Challenge of Environmental Justice written by Julian Agyeman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argues that environmental justice and the sustainable communities movement are compatible Popularized in the movies Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action, “environmental justice” refers to any local response to a threat against community health. In this book, Julian Agyeman argues that environmental justice and the sustainable communities movement are compatible in practical ways. Yet sustainability, which focuses on meeting our needs today while not compromising the ability of our successors to meet their needs, has not always partnered with the challenges of environmental justice. Sustainable Communities and the Challenge of Environmental Justice explores the ideological differences between these two groups and shows how they can work together. Agyeman provides concrete examples of potential model organizations that employ the types of strategies he advocates. This book is vital to the efforts of community organizers, policymakers, and everyone interested in a better environment and community health.
Book Synopsis Policy in Motion by : Lauren Michele
Download or read book Policy in Motion written by Lauren Michele and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While state and federal actions have been taken to set new requirements for vehicle efficiency and fuels, tackling travel behavior policies that reduce vehicle-miles-traveled and improve transportation network management is needed if California is to reduce its transportation sector's 38 percent contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. California's unique democracy and global economy is unparallel to any other union. The State is setting new policy directions for sustainable living through transportation planning, but outdated regulatory frameworks must be aligned with supporting paradigm shifts if California is to move forward in a truly unified vision for people-oriented development and transportation. "This book examines California's transportation planning initiatives since AB 32, with a nuanced eye toward the State's particular rules, laws, politics, and institutions. Lauren Michele provides insights and lessons for policymakers and practitioners-in California and elsewhere-as they strive to create more sustainable communities and transportation systems." --Dr. Daniel Sperling; Director/Professor, Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis In a time where both state and federal efforts are pointing toward sustainable planning, Lauren Michele covers five key topics that are necessary for policymakers practitioners to understand in order to implement sustainable transportation solutions at all levels of government: The Four Circles of GHG Reduction Strategies from Travel Behavior: categorizes the existing literature on GHG reduction ranges from land use and transportation strategies into four major themes Planning Theory and Frameworks in California: analyzes how environmental review frameworks, funding structures, and the land use/transportation planning process work at the local, regional, state, and federal levels Implementing SACOG's Blueprint and Metropolitan Transportation Plan: reveals what aspects of California government need policy reform in order to successfully implement SB 375's "Sustainable Communities Strategies" through an analysis of SACOG's Blueprint process, successes, and challenges Recommendations for New Policy Frameworks in California: contains suggestions for statute changes, agency actions, and framework reforms that support AB 32, SB 375, AB 857, and SB 391 objectives Creating a Federal Framework for Integrated Planning: provides recommended language for evolving federal climate/energy bills and the transportation reauthorization to support GHG reduction through the planning process
