Book Synopsis Freight Transport and the Modern Economy by : Michel Savy
Download or read book Freight Transport and the Modern Economy written by Michel Savy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freight Transport and the Modern Economy adapts a well-known textbook by Michel Savy, revising, extending and updating it for British, European and international readers. It deals not only with the technical aspects of transport, logistics and supply chain management, but also the interactions between transport professionals and the public authorities in the modern social, political, economic and environmental context. The transport of freight is presented as a system, mixing empirics and theory, showing how transport itself functions and also its strong influence on the modern economy, with a growing volume of production, turnover and employment. The nature of freight transport, an industrial process widely marketed as a service, is analysed in depth, explaining the main characteristics of the transport operation, its market and the regulatory context. The main actors, the professional actors (carriers, shippers and other agents) and the public authorities are introduced, and their behaviour and interactions are clarified. This comprehensive approach allows the reader to go further and consider in particular the approaches and practices of transport by carriers, customers, logistics managers, political decision makers and citizens, to tackle long range issues such as the ‘decoupling’ of production and transport recommended by some institutions and experts, and to explore the need for more infrastructure, or the capacity of the freight transport industry to reduce its contribution to pollution and climate change. This book treats freight transport as a whole system in its technical, economic, social, political and environmental context, in contrast to existing transport literature focused on individual aspects, such as transportation planning (usually for cars or passengers), logistics (essentially management issues), or individual transport modes. This book is comprehensive in its treatment of freight transport and in its use of multiple disciplinary perspectives.

Book Synopsis Impact of recession on freight transport of UK by : Shweta Sharma
Download or read book Impact of recession on freight transport of UK written by Shweta Sharma and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interesting study of risk identification related to the recent recession which hit UK in the third quarter of 2008.Recession not only accentuated certain risks already existing in freight transport in the past but also led to the emergence of new ones during and post-recession. This research is thus an attempt to identify and assess the risks faced by freight companies during recession and suggest mitigation strategies to deal with such risks in future. The study reveals that risks related to recession will become more intense in future, however preparedness and tested mitigation strategies can help to lessen or nullify their impact on freight companies.

Book Synopsis Reported road casualties Great Britain 2009 by : Great Britain: Department for Transport
Download or read book Reported road casualties Great Britain 2009 written by Great Britain: Department for Transport and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents detailed statistics about the circumstances of personal injury road accidents. Some 50 data items are collected by the police STATS19 system for each accident, including the time and location of the accident, the types of vehicles involved and what they were doing at the time of the accident, as well as some information on the drivers and casualties involved. In 2009 there was a reported total of 222,146 casualties of all severities (4 per cent lower than 2009). Of those, 2,222 people were killed in road accidents, 316 fewer (12 per cent lower) than in 2008. It has long been known that a considerable proportion of non-fatal injury accidents are not reported to the police and the current best estimate is that the total number of road casualties in Great Britain each year is around 700,000. In addition to the detailed tables there are seven articles containing further analysis on specific road safety topics: an overview and trends in the police data; valuation of road accidents and casualties; drinking and driving; contributory factors in road accidents; survey data on road traffic accidents, including an overall estimate of total casualties; hospital admissions data on road casualties; road safety research. The statistics in STATS19 were reviewed recently and some changes recommended. Also, a new electronic police accident reporting system, CRASH, for secure collection, validation, transmission and storage of road traffic collision reports, is to be introduced in 2011 and 2012.
