Download or read book Stochastic Approximation and Recursive Estimation written by M. B. Nevel'son and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1976-10-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to sequential methods of solving a class of problems to which belongs, for example, the problem of finding a maximum point of a function if each measured value of this function contains a random error. Some basic procedures of stochastic approximation are investigated from a single point of view, namely the theory of Markov processes and martingales. Examples are considered of applications of the theorems to some problems of estimation theory, educational theory and control theory, and also to some problems of information transmission in the presence of inverse feedback.

Download or read book Migration in Seismic Prospecting written by E.A. Kozlov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book first attempts to formulate the problem of 'migration’ as a method applied in seismic prospecting and then to comprehend the unifying fundamentals of the numerous and various migration techniques now in use. Guidelines are offered for the practical implementation of this method in complex structural as well as stratigraphic environment and the shortcomings and limitations that ought to be kept in mind when accomplishing migration or interpreting the resultant data are discussed. It will prove of use not only to practising professionals engaged in designing or running migration procedures, but also to those who would rather deal with the results of migration.
Book Synopsis Stable Approximate Evaluation of Unbounded Operators by : C. W. Groetsch
Download or read book Stable Approximate Evaluation of Unbounded Operators written by C. W. Groetsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral theory of bounded linear operators teams up with von Neumann’s theory of unbounded operators in this monograph to provide a general framework for the study of stable methods for the evaluation of unbounded operators. An introductory chapter provides numerous illustrations of unbounded linear operators that arise in various inverse problems of mathematical physics. Before the general theory of stabilization methods is developed, an extensive exposition of the necessary background material from the theory of operators on Hilbert space is provided. Several specific stabilization methods are studied in detail, with particular attention to the Tikhonov-Morozov method and its iterated version.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is the introduction and application of a new measure for smoothness offunctions. Though we have both previously published some articles in this direction, the results given here are new. Much of the work was done in the summer of 1984 in Edmonton when we consolidated earlier ideas and worked out most of the details of the text. It took another year and a half to improve and polish many of the theorems. We express our gratitude to Paul Nevai and Richard Varga for their encouragement. We thank NSERC of Canada for its valuable support. We also thank Christine Fischer and Laura Heiland for their careful typing of our manuscript. z. Ditzian V. Book Synopsis Interpolation Processes by : Giuseppe Mastroianni
Download or read book Interpolation Processes written by Giuseppe Mastroianni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-24 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpolation of functions is one of the basic part of Approximation Theory. There are many books on approximation theory, including interpolation methods that - peared in the last fty years, but a few of them are devoted only to interpolation processes. An example is the book of J. Szabados and P. Vértesi: Interpolation of Functions, published in 1990 by World Scienti c. Also, two books deal with a special interpolation problem, the so-called Birkhoff interpolation, written by G.G. Lorentz, K. Jetter, S.D. Riemenschneider (1983) and Y.G. Shi (2003). The classical books on interpolation address numerous negative results, i.e., - sultsondivergentinterpolationprocesses, usuallyconstructedoversomeequidistant system of nodes. The present book deals mainly with new results on convergent - terpolation processes in uniform norm, for algebraic and trigonometric polynomials, not yet published in other textbooks and monographs on approximation theory and numerical mathematics. Basic tools in this eld (orthogonal polynomials, moduli of smoothness,K-functionals, etc.), as well as some selected applications in numerical integration, integral equations, moment-preserving approximation and summation of slowly convergent series are also given. The rstchapterprovidesanaccountofbasicfactsonapproximationbyalgebraic and trigonometric polynomials introducing the most important concepts on appro- mation of functions. Especially, in Sect. 1.4 we give basic results on interpolation by algebraic polynomials, including representations and computation of interpolation polynomials, Lagrange operators, interpolation errors and uniform convergence in some important classes of functions, as well as an account on the Lebesgue function and some estimates for the Lebesgue constant.

Book Synopsis Excel in Complex Variables with the Complex Variable Boundary Element Method by : B. D. Wilkins
Download or read book Excel in Complex Variables with the Complex Variable Boundary Element Method written by B. D. Wilkins and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the familiar software Microsoft ® Excel, this book examines the applications of complex variables. Implementation of the included problems in Excel eliminates the “black box” nature of more advanced computer software and programming languages and therefore the reader has the chance to become more familiar with the underlying mathematics of the complex variable problems. This book consists of two parts. In Part I, several topics are covered that one would expect to find in an introductory text on complex variables. These topics include an overview of complex numbers, functions of a complex variable, and the Cauchy integral formula. In particular, attention is given to the study of analytic complex variable functions. This attention is warranted because of the property that the real and imaginary parts of an analytic complex variable function can be used to solve the Laplace partial differential equation (PDE). Laplace's equation is ubiquitous throughout science and engineering as it can be used to model the steady-state conditions of several important transport processes including heat transfer, soil-water flow, electrostatics, and ideal fluid flow, among others. In Part II, a specialty application of complex variables known as the Complex Variable Boundary Element Method (CVBEM) is examined. CVBEM is a numerical method used for solving boundary value problems governed by Laplace's equation. This part contains a detailed description of the CVBEM and a guide through each step of constructing two CVBEM programs in Excel. The writing of these programs is the culminating event of the book. Students of complex variables and anyone with an interest in a novel method for approximating potential functions using the principles of complex variables are the intended audience for this book. The Microsoft Excel applications (including simple programs as well as the CVBEM program) covered will also be of interest in the industry, as these programs are accessible to anybody with Microsoft Office.

Book Synopsis Insights from Book Translations on the International Diffusion of Knowledge by : Isabelle Yin Fong Sin
Download or read book Insights from Book Translations on the International Diffusion of Knowledge written by Isabelle Yin Fong Sin and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increases in the stock of ideas possessed by societies are central to modern economic growth. The implications of idea flows are striking: Klenow and Rodriguez-Clare (2005) estimate world production would be just 6% of its current level if countries did not share ideas. Yet, although theoretical economists have studied ideas and their diffusion extensively, empirical studies are scarce because ideas are inherently difficult to measure. Previous empirical studies of idea flows have tended to use proxies such as trade flows, foreign direct investment, migration, and patent citations. However, with the exception of the latter, these measures are not pure idea flows, and do not capture the key properties of ideas, namely non-rivalry and disembodiedness. My research proposes a novel measure of idea flows, namely book translations, and uses it to study the factors that affect the international diffusion of ideas. Book translations are an attractive way to quantify idea flows because they are both non-rival and disembodied; they are a pure measure of idea flows rather than a by-product of a process such as trade or migration, and their key purpose is to make the ideas contained in the book accessible to speakers of another language. In chapter 2, I outline the economics literature on ideas and their diffusion. I motivate and discuss book translations as a measure of idea flows, and provide a framework for thinking about when translations are likely to occur. I describe the translation data in chapter 3. The source of the data is an international bibliography of translations collected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. From this bibliography, I compile a data set of over 2 million translations published in 80 countries since the 1949, including detailed information on each title translated. I then document the main patterns of translation flows. In chapter 4, I employ a gravity framework to study how distance affects translation flows between countries. This sheds light both on the barriers to international idea diffusion and on the underlying causes of the negative relationship between distance and trade. Translations differ from trade in that they have zero transportation costs, but they are subject to similar search and information costs and costs of forming contracts. I estimate a gravity model where bilateral translation flows vary with the sizes of the countries and the distance between them, and find the elasticity of translations with respect to distance to be between -0.3 and -0.5 for the 1990s; these values are significantly smaller than the equivalent elasticity for trade found in the literature, suggesting a significant role for transportation costs in the distance effect on trade. In addition, I present several pieces of evidence that suggest supply-side frictions play a larger role in the distance effect on translations than do consumer preferences. For instance, the speed with which titles are translated, which is likely to largely capture supply frictions as opposed to demand factors, decreases significantly with distance. Finally, in joint work with Ran Abramitzky (chapter 5), I study how the collapse of the Communist regime in Eastern Europe at the close of the 1980s affected the international diffusion of ideas. We show that while translations between Communist languages decreased by two thirds with the collapse, Western-to-Communist translations increased by a factor of seven and reached Western levels. Convergence was full in economically-beneficial fields such as sciences and only partial in culturally-beneficial fields such as history. The effects were larger for more Western-oriented countries. These findings help us understand how institutions shape the international diffusion of knowledge and demonstrate the importance of preferences in determining the type of ideas that diffuse into a country.
Book Synopsis Discovery of Ill–Known Motifs in Time Series Data by : Sahar Deppe
Download or read book Discovery of Ill–Known Motifs in Time Series Data written by Sahar Deppe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes a novel motif discovery for time series, KITE (ill-Known motIf discovery in Time sEries data), to identify ill-known motifs transformed by affine mappings such as translation, uniform scaling, reflection, stretch, and squeeze mappings. Additionally, such motifs may be covered with noise or have variable lengths. Besides KITE’s contribution to motif discovery, new avenues for the signal and image processing domains are explored and created. The core of KITE is an invariant representation method called Analytic Complex Quad Tree Wavelet Packet transform (ACQTWP). This wavelet transform applies to motif discovery as well as to several signal and image processing tasks. The efficiency of KITE is demonstrated with data sets from various domains and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, where KITE yields the best outcomes.
