Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations Translating does not, for him, differ in essence from any other poetic job; as the poet begins by seeing, so the translator by reading; but his reading must be a kind of seeing. Hence the miraculous accomplishment of Pound's translations sitting down before a text, he doesn't chafe at restrictions unusual to his lyric practice. A good translation seems like a miracle because one who can read the original can, so to speak, see the poem before the poet writes it, and marvel at the success of his wrestle to subdue his own language to the vision; but Pound has always written as if to meet a test of this kind, in a spirit of utter fidelity to his material, whether a document or an intuition. He has told of working six months to fix a complex instantaneous emotion in fourteen words. Translation is indeed for Pound somewhat easier than what is called 'original composition'; those six months were spent less on finding the words than in bringing the emotion into focus, and a text to be translated, once grasped, doesn't wobble. The technical difficulty is comparable, but the emotional discipline, if no less exacting, less exhausting. Pound has for this reason recommended translation as an exercise to young poets plagued by the tendency of what they are trying to express to undergo expedient transformations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translation and Translations: Theory and Practice I have dealt chiefly, but by no means exclusively, with the two foreign languages in which I am most at home. This need not be deemed a disadvantage. The problems of translation from a modern language have everywhere their analogues in translation from an ancient one, whereas there are many affecting the latter to which the former shows nothing to correspond. DO they like to lie on the hard bare ground, And be covered by the snow? A leaf blew into my room last night And I dreamed that it spoke to me. Book excerpt: A novel of searing intelligence and startling originality, Lost in Translation heralds the debut of a unique new voice on the literary landscape. Nicole Mones creates an unforgettable story of love and desire, of family ties and human conflict, and of one woman's struggle to lose herself in a foreign land--only to discover her home, her heart, herself. At dawn in Beijing, Alice Mannegan pedals a bicycle through the deserted streets. An American by birth, a translator by profession, she spends her nights in Beijing's smoke-filled bars, and the Chinese men she so desires never misunderstand her intentions. All around her rushes the air of China, the scent of history and change, of a world where she has come to escape her father's love and her own pain. It is a world in which, each night as she slips from her hotel, she hopes to lose herself forever. For Alice, it began with a phone call from an American archaeologist seeking a translator. And it ended in an intoxicating journey of the heart--one that would plunge her into a nation's past, and into some of the most rarely glimpsed regions of China. Hired by an archaeologist searching for the bones of Peking Man, Alice joins an expedition that penetrates a vast, uncharted land and brings Professor Lin Shiyang into her life. As they draw closer to unearthing the secret of Peking Man, as the group's every move is followed, their every whisper recorded, Alice and Lin find shelter in each other, slowly putting to rest the ghosts of their pasts. What happens between them becomes one of the most breathtakingly erotic love stories in recent fiction. Indeed, Lost in Translation is a novel about love--between a nation and its past, between a man and a memory, between a father and a daughter. Its powerful impact confirms the extraordinary gifts of a master storyteller, Nicole Mones.

In addition to the customary alphabetical arrangement according to authors and titles, the works included in it were classified according to subject matter. The value of the catalogue for reference purposes was further enhanced by notes suggesting books for collateral reading. For such purposes, the catalogue of 1891 is of lasting value. Owing to the changes which have taken place in the contents of the fiction portion of the library, however, its usefulness as a record of available books has been much impaired. New books have been added and old ones have been worn out and removed from the shelves. Of the latter class, many being out of print have not been replaced. The necessity for a new guide to the available works of fiction becoming more and more pressing, this finding list has been prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Translations From the Greek Anthology The following Translations, executed at intervals during the last twenty years, appeared from time to time in Kilmarnock or Glasgow journals. They were undertaken solely as a literary solace, and with no view to subsequent collection and republication. But during late years I have been asked so often, and by so many, to republish them that I at last reluctantly consented. However, I had got jaded, and I shrank from the labour of revision. But I did them at first as carefully as I could, and I am not sure that by revision I should have improved them. Still, if I did not think they had some merit, especially that of fidelity, no solicitation, however urgent, would have induced me to republish.
