Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Translation of the Record Called Domesday: So Far as Relates to the Counties of So Hertford, as Oxford, and Gloucester The county of York, including Amounderness, Lonsdale, and Furness, in Lancashire; together with such parts of Westmoreland and Cumberland, as are contained in the Domesday Survey; and also the counties of Derby, Nottingham, Rutland, and Lincoln, are already before the Public, and are contained in a preceding volume of this translation. The present volume contains those announced in the title page. The remaining volumes are intended to be published early in each year, till the whole be completed; and will be fold for a much less fum than two guineas, as was mentioned in the original proposals. For the further convenience of his numerous friends and fellow-subjects, the translator has so ordered that separate counties may be had of his publishers. He cannot omit this opportunity of offering the tribute of his most grateful acknowledgments to all those who have either favoured him with their subscriptions, or otherwise contributed to the success of this undertaking, a feeling which he shall ever be proud to preserve, and which no circumstances of time and place can ever erase from his breast.
