Harris and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the book, Modeling and Computation of Boundary-Layer Flows^ extends the topic to include compressible flows. This implies the inclusion of the energy equation and non-constant fluid properties in the continuity and momentum equations. The necessary additions are included in new chapters, leaving the first nine chapters to serve as an introduction to incompressible flows and, therefore, as a platform for the extension. This part of the book can be used for a one semester course as described below. Improvements to the incompressible flows portion of the book include the removal of listings of computer programs and their description, and their incor poration in two CD-ROMs. A listing of the topics incorporated in the CD-ROM is provided before the index. In Chapter 7 there is a more extended discussion of initial conditions for three-dimensional flows, application of the characteristic box to a model problem and discussion of flow separation in three-dimensional laminar flows. There are also changes to Chapter 8, which now includes new sections on Tollmien-Schlichting and cross-flow instabilities and on the predic tion of transition with parabolised stability equations, and Chapter 9 provides a description of the rational behind interactive boundary-layer procedures.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this book was the first to offer a comprehensive review of large eddy simulations (LES) - the history, state of the art, and promising directions for research. Among topics covered are fundamentals of LES; LES of incompressible, compressible, and reacting flows; LES of atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental flows; and LES and massivelt parallel computing. The book grew out of an international workshop that, for the first time, brought together leading researchers in engineering and geophysics to discuss developments and applications of LES models in their respective fields. It will be of value to anyone with an interest in turbulence modelling.

Book excerpt: The methods considered in the 7th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Berlin, June 2014) have properties which offer distinct advantages for a number of applications. The second volume of the proceedings covers reviewed contributions reporting successful applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory and other topics. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. Researchers, PhD and masters level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations will find this volume useful, as will engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

The first section of the book focuses on Aerodynamics/Aeroacoustics, comprising eight papers that delve into the intricate relationship between fluid flow and aerodynamic performance. The second section explores the dynamics of Bluff/Moving Bodies through four insightful papers. Bubbly Flows, the subject of the third section, is examined through four papers. Moving on, the fourth section is dedicated to Combustion and Reactive Flows, presenting two papers that focus on the complex dynamics of combustion processes and the interactions between fluids and reactive species. Convection and Heat/Mass Transfer are the central themes of the fifth section, which includes three papers. These contributions explore the fundamental aspects of heat and mass transfer in fluid flows, addressing topics such as convective heat transfer, natural convection, and mass transport phenomena. The sixth section covers Data Assimilation and Uncertainty Quantification, featuring two papers that highlight the importance of incorporating data into fluid dynamic models and quantifying uncertainties associated with these models. The subsequent sections encompass a wide range of topics, including Environmental and Industrial Applications, Flow Separation, LES Fundamentals and Modelling, Multiphase Flows, and Numerics and Methodology. These sections collectively present a total of 23 papers that explore different facets of fluid dynamics, contributing to the advancement of the field and its practical applications.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original plans for a meeting to celebrate the second centenary of the As tronomical Observatory of Palermo were for a celebration with a double character. The gathering was to have both a historical character, appropriate for a bicenten nial, and a technical character, to note and chronicle the new phase of the history of the Observatory, which has prospered in parallel with the development of this fairly recent topic in astronomical research, the physics of stellar and solar coronae. After the untimely death of the Observatory's Director, Giuseppe S. Vaiana (Pippo to his many friends), a number of colleagues and friends insisted that the celebration should nevertheless be held and should be dedicated to this farsighted scientist who stimulated the development of coronal physics from the early x-ray observations of the solar corona to the recognition of coronae as an observable feature of nearly all stars. This memorial dedication did not change the character of the meeting, which was held in Palermo from 22 to 26 June 1992; as his contributions are very alive in the papers presented at the meeting and collected here, Pippo Vaiana has certainly achieved his place in the history of Astronomy.
