Book excerpt: XVIII Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale is a collection of plenary lectures presented at the 18th Colloquium Spectrospicum International, held at Grenoble, France on September 15-19, 1975. This book is composed of seven chapters, and begins with the potentials, advantages, and applications of X-ray and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The succeeding chapters deal with the design of fluorometric methods, the general aspects of the classical light sources (arc and spark) and their contributions to the accuracy of spectrochemical results, and the utility of electron microscopy for structure determination. The final chapters discuss the developments in spectroscopic instrumentation and progress in structure elucidation of natural products using some analytical techniques. This book will prove useful to analytical and organic chemists.

Book Synopsis Critical Properties of [Greek Letter Phi]4-theories by : Hagen Kleinert
Download or read book Critical Properties of [Greek Letter Phi]4-theories written by Hagen Kleinert and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains in detail how to perform perturbation expansions in quantum field theory to high orders, and how to extract the critical properties of the theory from the resulting divergent power series. These properties are calculated for various second-order phase transitions of three-dimensional systems with high accuracy, in particular the critical exponents observable in experiments close to the phase transition.Beginning with an introduction to critical phenomena, this book develops the functional-integral description of quantum field theories, their perturbation expansions, and a method for finding recursively all Feynman diagrams to any order in the coupling strength. Algebraic computer programs are supplied on accompanying World Wide Web pages. The diagrams correspond to integrals in momentum space. They are evaluated in 4-î dimensions, where they possess pole terms in 1/î. The pole terms are collected into renormalization constants. The theory of the renormalization group is used to find the critical scaling laws. They contain critical exponents which are obtained from the renormalization constants in the form of power series. These are divergent, due to factorially growing expansion coefficients. The evaluation requires resummation procedures, which are performed in two ways: (1) using traditional methods based on Pad and Borel transformations, combined with analytic mappings; (2) using modern variational perturbation theory, where the results follow from a simple strong-coupling formula. As a crucial test of the accuracy of the methods, the critical exponent à governing the divergence of the specific heat of superfluid helium is shown to agree very well with the extremely precise experimental number found in the space shuttle orbiting the earth (whose data are displayed on the cover of the book). The phi4-theories investigated in this book contain any number N of fields in an O(N)-symmetric interaction, or in an interaction in which O(N)-symmetry is broken by a term of a cubic symmetry. The crossover behavior between the different symmetries is investigated. In addition, alternative ways of obtaining critical exponents of phi4-theories are sketched, such as variational perturbation expansions in three rather than 4-î dimensions, and improved ratio tests in high-temperature expansions of lattice models.
Download or read book Dictionary of Electronics written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special interest in electronics all over the world is due to its decisive role in the scien tific and technical progress now taking place in all fields of modern technology. Electronics also plays a decisive role in the development of science, providing as it does the technical basis for various scientific experiments. The role of electronics in the development of the world's culture also deserves a special mention. That is why it is hoped that the English-German French-Dutch-Russian Dictionary of Electronics, which contains some 9.000 entries and is jointly published by Kluwer Technische Boeken, B.V. (Deventer, Holland) and Ruski Yazyk Publishers (Moscow, USSR) will be favourably received. In accordance with existing international tradition, the term «electronics» covers several fields known in Soviet classification as elec tronics proper, radio engineering, and wire communication. The entries included in this dictionary have been selected in accordance with the international understanding of the term «electronics». One of the main difficulties encountered by the compilers was that although according to some calculations the number of terms used in special literature on electronics exceeds 50.000, the vocabulary of the dictionary had to be restricted to only 9.000 entries. Therefore this dictionary cannot claim to be comprehensive. Its purpose is to enable a wide range of specialists in various countries to find the English, German, French, Dutch, or Russian equivalents of the principal and most up-to-date terms in the field of electronics. Most attention has been paid to quantum electronics, fibre optics, optoelectronics, integrated circuit technology, radiolocation and radionavigation, pulse technique, holography, etc.
Book Synopsis Molecular Magnetic Materials by : Barbara Sieklucka
Download or read book Molecular Magnetic Materials written by Barbara Sieklucka and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of this rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field of research. After a short introduction to the basics of magnetism and molecular magnetism, the text goes on to cover specific properties of molecular magnetic materials as well as their current and future applications. Design strategies for acquiring molecular magnetic materials with desired physical properties are discussed, as are such multifunctional materials as high Tc magnets, chiral and luminescent magnets, magnetic sponges as well as photo- and piezo-switching magnets. The result is an excellent resource for materials scientists, chemists, physicists and crystal engineers either entering or already working in the field.

Book Synopsis Fashionable Nonsense by : Alan Sokal
Download or read book Fashionable Nonsense written by Alan Sokal and published by Picador. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 physicist Alan Sokal published an essay in Social Text--an influential academic journal of cultural studies--touting the deep similarities between quantum gravitational theory and postmodern philosophy. Soon thereafter, the essay was revealed as a brilliant parody, a catalog of nonsense written in the cutting-edge but impenetrable lingo of postmodern theorists. The event sparked a furious debate in academic circles and made the headlines of newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. In Fashionable Nonsense: Postmodern Intellectuals' Abuse of Science, Sokal and his fellow physicist Jean Bricmont expand from where the hoax left off. In a delightfully witty and clear voice, the two thoughtfully and thoroughly dismantle the pseudo-scientific writings of some of the most fashionable French and American intellectuals. More generally, they challenge the widespread notion that scientific theories are mere "narrations" or social constructions.

Book Synopsis Molecular Magnets Recent Highlights by : Wolfgang Linert
Download or read book Molecular Magnets Recent Highlights written by Wolfgang Linert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with recent scientific highlights on molecular magnetism in Europe. Molecular magnetism is a new interdisciplinary discipline gathering together chemists and physicists, theoreticians and experimentalists. The book intends to provide the reader with documented answers to many current questions: How can chemists use soft conditions to transform molecules in light and transparent magnets. How does a molecular system can behave as a single molecule magnet. How to combine several functions in the same molecular system. How light can be used to switch molecular magnetic properties. How can molecules be used for ultimate high density information storage or in quantum computing. What kind of methods do physicists develop and use to explore these new properties of matter. What kind of concepts and calculations can be provided for theoreticians to design new objects and to better understand the field and to enlarge its exciting developments.
