Fundamentals including time of flight, impedance discontinuities, proper termination schemes, nonlinear and reactive loads, and crosstalk are considered. Required prerequisite knowledge is limited to conventional circuit theory. The material is tutorial for electrical and computer engineers on the topic of transient signals on transmission lines. Emphasis has been placed on aspects of the subject that have application to signal integrity and high-speed digital circuit design issues, including proper termination schemes to avoid impedance discontinuities, reactive and nonlinear loads, and an introduction to crosstalk. The coverage focuses on the very important topic of transmission line transients which have been de-emphasized in most current textbooks. This book is prepared to supplement traditional texts for advanced students studying electromagnetics and for a vast array of practicing electrical engineers, computer engineers and material scientists with interests in signal integrity and high-speed digital design. In this second edition, examples and new problems have been added throughout. A new chapter on differential transmission lines has also been incorporated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, a method for the evaluation of the transient response of a nonuniform lossy transmission line is presented. The method of characteristics is employed to obtain difference equations describing the transmission line. A stepped line approximation is used to analyze the transient response of the given nonuniform line. The concept of electrical length is employed in dividing the line into a number of equal delay sections. The set of difference equations describing the set stepped line is suitable for digital computer solution. The computational procedure involving the use of a digital computer is illustrated for a specific distributions of L(x), C(x), r(x) and g(x).

Book excerpt: Transmission Lines with Pulse Excitation aims to provide engineers with a guide to the solution of the problem on the behavior of a pulse signal on a transmission line. The book begins with an introduction to the general equations for transmission lines and the simplest pulse, the unit step. Chapters II and III present the numerical and graphical representation of the methods of traveling waves. Chapter IV is devoted to the study of the problem on the propagation of an arbitrary pulse on an arbitrary line. The final chapter describes the behavior of a line in the sinusoidal steady state. The text will be highly useful to radio engineers and students of engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fundamental and practical introduction to radio frequency and microwave engineering and physical aspects of wireless communication In this book, the author addresses a wide range of radio-frequency and microwave topics with emphasis on physical aspects including EM and voltage waves, transmission lines, passive circuits, antennas, radio wave propagation. Up-to-date RF design tools like RF circuit simulation, EM simulation and computerized smith charts, are used in various examples to demonstrate how these methods can be applied effectively in RF engineering practice. Design rules and working examples illustrate the theoretical parts. The examples are close to real world problems, so the reader can directly transfer the methods within the context of their own work. At the end of each chapter a list of problems is given in order to deepen the reader’s understanding of the chapter material and practice the new competences. Solutions are available on the author’s website. Key Features: Presents a wide range of RF topics with emphasis on physical aspects e.g. EM and voltage waves, transmission lines, passive circuits, antennas Uses various examples of modern RF tools that show how the methods can be applied productively in RF engineering practice Incorporates various design examples using circuit and electromagnetic (EM) simulation software Discusses the propagation of waves: their representation, their effects, and their utilization in passive circuits and antenna structures Provides a list of problems at the end of each chapter Includes an accompanying website containing solutions to the problems (http:\\www.fh-dortmund.de\gustrau_rf_textbook) This will be an invaluable textbook for bachelor and masters students on electrical engineering courses (microwave engineering, basic circuit theory and electromagnetic fields, wireless communications). Early-stage RF practitioners, engineers (e.g. application engineer) working in this area will also find this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using contour integration techniques, the authors have calculated the transient response of a lossy homogeneous isotropic plasma to a unit step and a step-carrier sine wave. It was found that in the presence of losses the temporal step function response within the plasma does not approach zero for large time as for the collisionless case, but rather approaches unity. The rate at which the transient approaches the asymptotic value of unity is strongly dependent on the losses, being quite rapid for large losses and exceedingly slow for very small losses. This result has an important impact on the propagation of EMP through the plasma sheath around a reentry vehicle, and through the ionized region near a low altitude nuclear fireball. (Author).
