Book excerpt: During the past 3 years, material damage thresholds have been investigated as well as the magnitudes and response times of nonlinear susceptibilities of several important classes of optical materials. In addition, the Modified Twyman-Green Interferometer (MTGI) was invented. The MTGI determines both the magnitude and phase of the nonlinear susceptibility of a material relative to a known standard. This device has found significant acceptance within the optics research community. A phenomenon where energy may be exchanged between two frequency degenerate laser pulses has been characterized. Experimental investigations of optical phase conjugation via degenerate four wave mixing and beam coupling via degenerate two wave mixing using several nonlinear materials are compared. The components of the various physical phenomena which determine a nonlinear optical response as well as the interactions between these components are described. The strengths and weaknesses of the various optical materials and the utility of the MTGI are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.

Book excerpt: Photorefarctive materials are by far the most suitable medium to generate optical phase conjugation. In particular, BaTiO3 is an attractive one among the candidates of photorefractive materials because of its large electrooptic coefficient that leads to strong coupling for two- and four-wave mixing. High phase conjugate reflectivity is always desired as well as diffraction efficiency for their different potential applications. This book contains the experimental observations of a unique enhancement of the transient diffraction efficiency and phase conjugate reflectivity with steady-state grating in an undoped BaTiO3 crystal. A theoretical explanation behind this enhancement has been proposed for the first time. This book may very helpful for the future researchers on the relevant field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studying the transient behavior of phase conjugation via four wave mixing, it has been noted that very short probe pulses invariably produce considerably broadened conjugate pulses unless the conjugator is inordinately short. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to determine whether a short conjugate pulse might be produced by judicious programming of the probe. It was found that the probe can indeed be tailored to produce an arbitrarily short conjugate signal and, if the conjugating medium exhibits linear absorption, then the total energy in the probe signal is finite. The required probe programming can be determined by numerical evaluation of a Fourier transform.

Book excerpt: The study of post-dryout heat transfer has generated great interest because of its importance in determining maximum clad temperature in nuclear reactor loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs). An associated phenomenon, the deterioration of heat transfer in boiling, is significant to other industrial sectors. This book provides comprehensive coverage of post-dryout heat transfer, discussing such essential topics as post-dryout heat transfer in dispersed flow, interpretation and use of transient data in surface rewetting by reinstatement of flow or by reducing heat flux, rod bundles, two-phase flow occurrences in the post-dryout region, various methods for predicting ""inverted annular flow,"" and new experiments for measuring thermodynamic nonequilibrium with probes in the channel. The book also presents a basis for independent safety assessment of nuclear reactors and chemical plant systems where post-dryout heat transfer may occur. Post-Dryout Heat Transfer will be a useful reference for researchers and professionals in the nuclear and chemical production industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invention ofthe laser 25years ago resulted in powerfullight sources which led to the observation of unexpected and striking phenomena. New fields of science such as holography and nonlinear optics developed constituting the basis of this volume. The classical principle of linear superposition of light wavesdoes not hold anymore. Two laser beams crossing in a suitable material may produce a set of new beams with different directions and frequencies. The interaction of light waves can be understood by considering the optical grating structures which develop in the overlap region. The optical properties of matter become spatially modulated in the interference region of two light waves. Permanent holographic gratings have been produced in this way by photographic processes for many years. In contrast, dynamic or transient gratings disappear after the inducing light source, usually a laser, has been switched off. The grating amplitude is controlled by the light intensity. Dynamic gratings have been induced in a large number ofsolids, liquids, and gases, and are detected by diffraction, 'forced light scattering' of a third probing beam, or by self-diffraction of the light waves inducing the grating. The combined interference and diffraction effect corresponds to four-wave mixing (FWM) in the language of nonlinear optics. The process is called degenerate ifthe frequenciesofthe three incident wavesand the scattered wave are equal. Degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) is a simple method to achieve phase conjugation, i.e. to generate a wave which propagates time reversed with respect to an incident wave.
