Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transient heat flow in fibrous composites is important in determining the depth of heat penetration and temperature gradients near surface layers. A pervious report dealt with heat flow parallel to the fiber axis. This research is concerned with heat flow perpendicular to the uni-directional fibers. Temperature responses under the condition of a constant surface heat load are calculated by a finite-difference approach. The rise of the composite surface temperature is governed by two bounding-limits (the effective bound and the matrix bound) depending on the time scale. A threshold time criterion is established in this research which is based on a heat penetration concept.

Book excerpt: For uni-directional fibrous composites and laminated composites, a heat-balance integral method has been developed for the analysis of transient heat flow along the fibers or in the plane of laminates. The method is based on the construction of, for the two constituent media, temperature profiles which not only satisfy the necessary boundary conditions but also fulfill the asymptotic error function properties when inter-region conduction is vanishingly small or at very early times of the heat transient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With anticipated increased use of composite materials in aerospace structures and other applications, thermal properties of composites are needed as essential design information. In the past there was only scanty amount of research effort in thermal analysis of composites, as most of the work has been concerned with their mechanical properties. This report contains results from a rigorous analysis to determine steady-state effective thermal conductivities of fiber-matrix type of composites. The fibers bundled into twos are considered dispersed in a matrix of resin. The dispersion patterns of configurations considered are: (1) uni-directional fibers in a matrix, as the simplest geometry, and (2) 0.90 configuration in which two uni-directional tapes are overlaid at 90 degrees to each other. The method of analysis is to solve a two-region steady-state heat conduction equation either analytically or numerically. The analysis assumes a prior knowledge of the geometry of a composite and the constituents thermal conductivities.

With the fiber axis arranged parallel or transverse to the 4 heat flow direction, effective thermal conductivities and diffusiveities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained. also determined in this work were the isotropic conductivity and diffusivity for the epoxy resin (Fibrite No. 934) as 0.136 BTU/ hr-F-ft. and 8.5. x 10 to the 7th power sec, respectively. A value of k=6.0 BTU/ hr-F-ft for carbon fobers (Hercules 3501-5A) in the axial direction was deduced. For the conductivity transverse to the fibers, a value of 2.4 BTU/hr-F-ft was obtained from the measured effective transverse conductivity values. The thermal capacities (pC) for the carbon fibers and resin used in this study were determined as 48.2 and 44.4 BTU/cu ft 3-F, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high specific conductivity of graphite fiber/copper matrix (Gr/Cu) composites offers great potential for high heat flux structures operating at elevated temperatures. To determine the feasibility of applying Gr/Cu composites to high heat flux structures, composite plates were fabricated using unidirectional and cross-plied pitch-based P100 graphite fibers in a pure copper matrix. Thermal conductivity of the composites was measured from room temperature to 1073 K, and thermal expansion was measured from room temperature to 1050 K. The longitudinal thermal conductivity, parallel to the fiber direction, was comparable to pure copper. The transverse thermal conductivity, normal to the fiber direction, was less than that of pure copper and decreased with increasing fiber content. The longitudinal thermal expansion decreased with increasing fiber content. The transverse thermal expansion was greater than pure copper and nearly independent of fiber content.

Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

This interdisciplinary book comprises 16 chapters dealing with combined action of heat transfer and concomitant processes. Five chapters of its first section discuss heat effects due to laser, ion and plasma-solid interaction. In eight chapters of the second section engineering applications of heat conduction equations to the curing reaction kinetics in manufacturing process, their combination with mass transport or ohmic and dielectric losses, heat conduction in metallic porous media and power cables are considered. Analysis of the safety of mine hoist under influence of heat produced by mechanical friction, heat transfer in boilers and internal combustion engine chambers, management for ultrahigh strength steel manufacturing are described in this section as well. Three chapters of the last third section are devoted to air cooling of electronic devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite materials are widely used in temperature fluctuating environments, which make these materials highly prone to cracking. The cracking phenomenon is a result of high thermal stresses that are generated by the mismatch in properties of the composite constituents, particularly the mismatch in the thermal expansion coefficient. The main objective of this study is to understand the micromechanics of such a phenomenon. The problem has been investigated using the finite element method (FEM). The analyses were performed utilizing 3-D prism and axisymmetric models. Hexagonal fiber packing of unidirectional composites was considered. The dimensions of the models were assumed such that the models could provide sufficient information on the behavior near the free surface as well as the interior of fiber composites. Properties of the constituents were considered to be temperature dependent. The elasto-plastic and visco-elastic characteristics of the materials were also included. The transient thermal analysis of the models showed that, for most practical applications, the temperature gradient in the composite constituents has minor effects on the stresses generated. Therefore, several stress analyses were performed assuming a uniformly changing temperature throughout the composite. The elastic analysis of thermal stresses and deformations showed high radial and hoop stress concentrations occurring at the fiber end on the free surface. This is contrary to the shear-lag theorem, which assumes that these stress components are negligible. An overlapping hypothesis, based on the deformation of the fiber and matrix, is proposed to explain such high radial and hoop stresses. Using regular FEM elements, it was concluded that the stresses are singular in nature. The stress singularity was numerically investigated and found to be of the type r -á with á being dependent on the material properties but having a value close to 1/3. The elasto-visco-plastic behavior of composites was.
