Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the Lambda Literary Award winner Kamikaze Lust delivers “a thrilling tale of espionage, family ties, sex, love, and betrayal” (The Advocate). Jennifer Baron is a failed Olympic speed skater now running her family’s foundation and trying to stay sober, when her billionaire father disappears. She travels to Israel in search of him, becoming recklessly entangled in his illegal dealings and with his enigmatic lover, Gila, a former Mossad agent gone bad. Along the way, she is drawn into the shadow worlds of the Promised Land, where career-jockeying government agents, fake Orthodox Jews, queer Palestinians on the run, and other displaced wanderers scramble to find home amid the endless cycles of war, occupation, and heartbreak. The Book of Love and Hate is an unraveling of white-collar crime and its motivations. It’s a testament to the magnificent oblivion of love and a shattering of inherited trauma, both personal and historical. “A thriller of literary pedigree, unbound by convention . . . If you’re seeking a cathartic resolution in the final pages, you might be disappointed—but you shouldn’t be surprised. Not when you’re talking about Israel and corrupt fortunes, and madness, obsession, and abuse . . . Just don’t expect to find a safe, comforting space in the pages of Lauren Sanders’s discomforting and terrific book.” —The Village Voice “Sanders knows how to craft a story. The storyline is riveting, and the personal development of the characters kept me engaged on a deeper level than even her thrilling plot could. Her prose is beautiful and brings you to an ending that is sure to have you reeling.” —Windy City Times

Book excerpt: Reducing Hate through Multicultural Education and Transformation is a book that reminds us that we live in a complex world; and at micro and macro levels, the demography is changing and people are worried about the current state of affairs, their future, and the future of their children. At local, national, and global levels, there appears to be unsteadiness, crises, and struggles in our economies, politics, and societies. Disruptions, disasters, and deaths are visible at all spectra of our lives; and our leaders seem unready, unwilling, underprepared, and unprepared to bring us together to solve our problems for the common good. Even when we make efforts to respond to human differences and multicultural valuing, they seem to be half-baked cakes that are unready for consumption; and there continues to be visible hateful actions that devastate our sacred existence. While these hateful actions have filtered into our families, schools, communities, nation, and world, we pretend to solve them by engaging in phony community relations, fraudulent multiculturalism, and unreasonable “wokeness” to masquerade our inefficiency, inflexibility, prejudice, and jaundiced views. Reducing Hate through Multicultural Education and Transformation provides cutting edge solutions for innovative educators and leaders. Yes, hate is a controversial construct that is rarely researched, studied, and discussed in education. The reason is that teachers and related professionals are supposedly very liberal people who cannot hate their culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students, parents, and colleagues. And, the lingering question is, can a teacher who is always liberal be also hateful? This question seems legitimate; and, to answer it, we must look deeper into traditional presumptions. The reality is that White educators and professionals who dominate the educational profession are human-beings who live in their respective White dominated communities. As a result, they teach or lead people who they do not know very well. If not, why should CLD individuals continue to experience hateful misidentifications, misassessments, miscategorizations, misplacements, and misinstructions in school programs? And, why should disproportionate placements of CLD learners with special education needs, gifts and talents, and emotional/behavioral problems continue to be burning issues in education? This book provides outside-the-box solutions!

This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Bahram Shahmardaan in "Love and Hate - Manifesting Love and Transforming Hate," adeptly explains the negative basis of the human mind and ego and the feeling of separation is the reason why human minds respond much more readily to negative impulses of fear and hate rather than positive impulses of love. The fear of loss is a greater motivation than opportunity for gain. We have to accept responsibility for everything that happens in our life. We should refuse to blame others for the adverse situations we experience and deal with them out of love and understanding rather than reacting out of hate and fear. Practical steps can be taken to manifest love and transform hate. Many of us do not realize this but we really are only channels through which the Universe flows and distributes itself. Even among those who are aware that we are only channels of the Universe, few consciously live their lives as channels. All religions have Love as their central theme and have emphasized self-control. But in the name of religion people are being excited to kill those who do not belong. It is ironic that many people who cannot control themselves, try to control others, and many who cannot change themselves try to change others. Do not allow yourselves to fall into this trap created by the mind and ego. Instead take charge of your mind and gain control of your senses. To do that you need to go within yourself.

Book excerpt: Question: You say that love and hate are one; but I see more hate in the world than love. At the same time, you say that enlightenment is neither love nor hate. Are you speaking of two different qualities of love? How does this fit with your message of love? "Love and hate are just two sides of the same coin. But with love something very drastic has happened. It is unimaginable how this drastic step was taken by people who had all the good intentions in the world. You may never have even suspected what has destroyed love. It is the continuous teaching of love that has destroyed it. Hate is still pure -- love is not."

Book excerpt: Our identity is an indication of how we feel about ourselves and how others feel about us; it is an important part of our existence. Our psyche is like a mirror trying to reflect the world around us, but what we are seeing in our mirror is not an exact replica of our surroundings. In Sailor's Psychology, author Dr. Chester Litvin explores a host of issues relating to human psychology and existence. Drawing on cultural insight, Litvin, a psychotherapist, uses a sailor's analogy to discuss the human voyage to find the self-to know who we are and accept it. Sailor's Psychology examines the human spirit through a thorough discussion of li>splitting from the self; splitting in the child; looking for meeting; meetings with the self; meetings with fragments; and meetings after restructurings. In Sailor's Psychology, Litvin shows that when our psyche becomes whole we are ready for dialogs and real meetings, which are the true goals of our life.

Book excerpt: The author argues that there are specific turning points in evolution. Structures and behavioral patterns that evolved in the service of discrete functions sometimes allow for unforeseen new developments as a side effect. In retrospect, they have proven to be pre-adaptations, and serve as raw material for natural selection to work upon. Love and Hate was intended to complement Konrad Lorenz's book, On Aggression, by pointing out our motivations to provide nurturing, and thus to counteract and correct the widespread but one-sided opinion that biologists always present nature as bloody in tooth and claw and intra-specific aggression as the prime mover of evolution. This simplistic image is, nonetheless, still with us, all the more regrettably because it hampers discussion across scholarly disciplines. Eibl-Eibesfeldt argues that leaders in individualized groups are chosen for their pro-social abilities. Those who comfort group members in distress, who are able to intervene in quarrels and to protect group members who are attacked, those who share, those who, in brief, show abilities to nurture, are chosen by the others as leaders, rather than those who use their abilities in competitive ways. Of course, group leaders may need, beyond their pro-social competence, to be gifted as orators, war leaders, or healers. Issues of love and hate are social in origin and hence social in consequence. Life has emerged on this planet in a succession of new forms, from the simplest algae to man-man the one being who reflects upon this creation, who seeks to fashion it himself and who, in the process, may end by destroying it. It would indeed be grotesque if the question of the meaning of life were to be solved in this way. In language that is clear and accessible throughout, arguing forcefully for the innate and "preprogrammed" dispositions of behavior in higher vertebrates, including humans, Eibl-Eibesfeldt steers a middle course in discussing the development of cultural and ethical norms while insisting on their matrix of biological origins.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book and aSan Jose Mercury News Top 20 Nonfiction Book of 2003In 1606, approximately 105 British colonists sailed to America, seeking gold and a trade route to the Pacific. Instead, they found disease, hunger, and hostile natives. Ill prepared for such hardship, the men responded with incompetence and infighting; only the leadership of Captain John Smith averted doom for the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The Jamestown colony is one of the great survival stories of American history, and this book brings it fully to life for the first time. Drawing on extensive original documents, David A. Price paints intimate portraits of the major figures from the formidable monarch Chief Powhatan, to the resourceful but unpopular leader John Smith, to the spirited Pocahontas, who twice saved Smith’s life. He also gives a rare balanced view of relations between the settlers and the natives and debunks popular myths about the colony. This is a superb work of history, reminding us of the horrors and heroism that marked the dawning of our nation.

Holm-Hadulla encourages us to unleash our own creative and social potential. Readers become acquainted with Madonna and Amy Winehouse, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, and Mick Jagger. Before wandering through their lives and work in the interplay of constructive and destructive forces, they encounter the "Big Five of Creativity": talent, ability, motivation, resilience, favorable environments. The author has theoretically researched their interaction over decades, tested them in practice and drawn the conclusion: The creative transformation of human destructiveness is our chance to lead a fulfilled life in social responsibility.
