This study holds that, regardless of its sui generis nature, the January 2011 Egyptian Revolution became possible as a combined result of a sociopolitical transformation in the Egyptian society in roughly the last decade of Mubarak's rule and several contingent events that took place right before and during the January 25 events. Sociopolitical transformations in Egyptian society were conceptualized along two dimensions: 1) Gradual changes in Egyptian sociopolitical life that occurred particularly on the last decade of Mubarak regime, and 2) Paradigmatic changes that took place during the 18 days of protests. This ethnographic account of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution -with involved political processes and mechanisms; and human agency that transformed and was transformed by those mechanisms and processes- aspires to contribute to our understanding of 2011 Egyptian Revolution, and possibly revolutions in general, and the ensuing political crises that arise in transition periods after major political transformations.

In 2011, four years ago, I returned from Tahrir Square, Cairo, where I spent 20 days in April listening, lecturing, and communicating with all strata of Egyptian society. I was enthralled by the post-Mubarak Egypt, home for one quarter of the Arab people numbering more than 300 million. I went for dinner at the home of an Egyptian judge. His 6 year old daughter, Lojeen, came to give me a gift. It was an Egyptian flag!! I asked the people on the streets of Cairo about how they felt after Mubarak's removal. Their nearly uniform answer was, "No more fear." I left my hotel (the Ramses Hilton, at the edge of Tahrir) to cross a side street at a little cafe for the rank and file. The shoe-shine person came to serve me and began to talk politics. I realized that people have found their voice in a re-birth of freedom. I was interviewed by two young women, one from the Egyptian magazine "October"; the other from the Kuwaiti newspaper "Al-Rai" (The Opinion). Their questions were mostly about how we can retrieve the billions of dollars allegedly siphoned off by Mubarak and his regime to be deposited in banks abroad. The hotel restaurant at breakfast was nearly empty, so the restaurant help would surround me to praise the January 25 Revolution, although tourism has nearly, for now, evaporated. These impressions and the desire to support democracy propelled me to create "Tahrir Forever," the blog that has now been compiled in this book.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores some of the ways in which Egyptian men and women changed certain aspects of their reality through collective actions in public spaces during and after the 2011 revolution. This thesis argues that the power of collective action which Egyptian men and women successfully employed in 2011 to bring down the thirty year regime of Hosni Mubarak carried over into the post-Revolutionary era to express itself in three unique ways: the combatting of women's sexual harassment in public spaces, the creation of graffiti with distinct revolutionary themes, and the creation of protest music which drew from historical precedent while also creating new songs. The methodology of this study of the 2011 Egyptian revolution lies is the use of newspaper reporting and online sources as primary source material. These sources include Egyptian newspapers such as Egypt independent and Al ahram, as well as scholarly websites like Jadaliyya, and also personal blogs. These accounts provide topical and up to the minute accounts of history as it unfolded. Primary source material is also drawn from oral interviews done during the summer of 2012 by the author and others in Egypt. The theoretical grounding lies in social movement theories that are centered on the Middle Eastern context in particular. Drawing from newspaper accounts and social movement theories this thesis is built around a notion of collective action expressed in unique ways in post-2011 revolution Egypt. This thesis is also solidly grounded in the history of Egypt as relevant to each of the topics which it explores: combatting sexual harassment and the creation of graffiti and music. Relevant scholarly books help to inform the historical material presented here as context. This thesis is situated within the existing literature on the 2011 Egyptian revolution and public history while also contributing something new to this area of study by examining the actions of ordinary men and women acting in public spaces in new ways during and after the revolution. The existing literature on the 2011 revolution generally neglects micro-level changes of the sort discussed in the topical areas to follow. The ordinary men and women who contributed to the revolution are now part of the historical record, an example of the public making history par excellence.

Book excerpt: Beyond Europe is an interesting collection of the research papers in the area of International Relations, which provides an overview of the modern world in the light of various theories explaining the mode in which certain countries function on the international arena. Despite the fact that the selection feels somewhat random at first, and the connection between the chosen topics is not immediately clear, the collection does manage to form a coherent whole. The discrepancies, lines of divisions and prevalence of the particularisms do, in the end, create the global picture of the contemporary world, which is far from unified - even the agreements that are necessary for the future existence of the world can not be achieved at this stage. It is exemplified by the agreements and syndicates established by certain players on the international area that serve nothing else but to create or maintain the domination of one country over the other. One of the few conclusions that one might come to after reading the volume is that the lack of empathy and class consciousness on the international area withholds the weaker players from development, and that modern politics laced with the neoliberal mode of thinking very unfortunately take neocolonialism for a more positively resounding concept of globalization. Whatever the end result of the ongoing process, however, the theories of authoritarian consolidation - which view the capacity of a political regime to adapt to a changing environment as key to its durability - provide an interesting framework to analyze the process of crisis of early 2011. The work conducted by Michel Camau on Tunisia's authoritarian regime and its transformations in the 1980s, in particular, is worth being considered and put in perspective with the recent developments in Egypt. It underlines how factors of a different nature can combine and create a fluid conjuncture to which political actors - regime leaders included - may find it difficult to adapt. The Egyptian context of January 2011 can be viewed as one of these critical moments of political fluidity in which transformation or rupture are at stake for the regime, depending on the capacity of its leadership to adapt. The prospect of the presidential succession is seen as a window of opportunity for changing the balance of power within the political system. The social effects of liberal economic policies and the growing political awareness of youth have led to major social transformations. Growing tensions within and between the main institutions of the regime have progressively undermined the ruling elite's cohesion. Because it takes place in such a critical conjuncture, the multisectorial mobilization of early 2011 contributes to the blurring of the leadership's calculations and capacity to adapt. The regime undergoes a process of fracture and disintegration whose eventual result remains unclear.
