Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protein molecule is the basic building block of every living entity. Its deficiency leads to restricted growth and development of individuals. Globally, such malnutrition is on the rise due to various reasons such as rapid population growth, stagnation of productivity, and ever-rising costs. Millions of people, especially in developing and under-developed countries, suffer from protein malnutrition and the only possible solution is to encourage farmers to grow high-protein food legume crops in their fields for domestic consumption. This, however, could be possible if farmers are provided with new cultivars with high yield, and resistance to major insects, diseases, and key abiotic stresses. The major food legume crops are chickpea, cowpea, common bean, groundnut, lentil, pigeonpea, and soybean. Predominantly, the legume crops are grown under a subsistence level and, therefore, in comparison to cereals and horticultural crops their productivity is low and highly variable. The crop breeders around the globe are engaged in breeding suitable cultivars for harsh and changing environments but success has been limited and not up to needs. With the recent development of new technologies in plant sciences, efforts are being made to help under-privileged farmers through breeding new cultivars which will produce more protein per unit of land area. In this book, the contributors analyze the constraints, review new technologies, and propose a future course of crop breeding programs in seven cold and warm season legume crops.

Book excerpt: Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less-Favoured Areas in Europe is a collection of papers from a symposium of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Food and Agriculture Organization held in Geneva on May 22-26, 1978. This collection of papers covers European countries with areas where agricultural development is limited. This book defines less-favored agricultural areas as those places where there is limited agricultural development, of different sizes and economic and social importance. These areas are also defined as suffering serious deterioration of the natural environment and of economic and social activities. This book then presents country reports covering problem areas in Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, and Germany. In reviewing each of these countries, and other countries as well, the text presents each government's objectives concerning the rural areas, the actual strategies and policies pursued by the state, and the problems encountered when implementing these policies. This text also gives the methodologies used in evaluating these programs. This book can prove useful for government officials and ministries dealing with the agricultural sector, heads of volunteer organizations dealing with countryside development, and academicians in political science and developmental planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food legumes are important constituents of the human diet and animal feed where they are crucial to a balanced diet, supplying high quality proteins. These crops also play an important role in low-input agricultural production systems by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Despite systematic and continuous breeding efforts through conventional methods, substantial genetic gains have not been achieved. With the rise in demand for food legumes/pulses and increased market value of these crops, research has focused on increasing production and improving the quality of pulses for both edible and industria.

Book excerpt: The compounds making up the dry weight of seeds play a major role in determining the nutritional quality, and ultimately the uses of the economic value of the seed. The carbohydrate fraction can be divided into starch fibre and soluble carbohydrates. This book covers the chemistry, nutritional value, physiology, processing and breeding/biotechnology of carbohydrates in grain legume seeds. There is currently no book available which covers the strategies for improving carbohydrates in grain legumes which takes into account both nutritional and agricultural requirements. Thisbooks fills that gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abiotic Stress and Legumes: Tolerance and Management is the first book to focus on the ability of legume plants to adapt effectively to environmental challenges. Using the -omic approach, this book takes a targeted approach to understanding the methods and means of ensuring survival and maximizing the productivity of the legume plant by improving tolerance to environmental /abiotic stress factors including drought, temperature change, and other challenges. The book presents a comprehensive overview of the progress that has been made in identifying means of managing abiotic stress effects, specifically in legumes, including the development of several varieties which exhibit tolerance through high yield using transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic and ionomic approaches. Further, exogenous application of various stimulants such as plant hormones, nutrients, sugars, and polyamines has emerged as an alternative strategy to improve productivity under these environmental challenges. Abiotic Stress and Legumes: Tolerance and Management examines these emerging strategies and serves as an important resource for researchers, academicians and scientists, enhancing their knowledge and aiding further research. Explores the progress made in managing abiotic stress, specifically with high yield legumes Highlights the molecular mechanisms related to acclimation Presents proven strategies and emerging approaches to guide additional research
