Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Bees," by E. F. Phillips, Ph. D., in charge of bee culture in this bureau. This paper will supersede Farmers' Bulletins 59 and 397, A few new illustrations which add greatly to the value of the paper and some minor alterations in the text are the only changes in this from Farmers Bulletin 397; but since it is not now the policy of the department to issue revised editions, it is recommended that this bulletin be issued under a new serial number. In the preparation of this paper the aim has been to give briefly such information as is needed by persons engaged in the keeping of bees, and to answer inquiries such as are frequently received from correspondents of the department. No attempt has been made to include discussions of bee anatomy, honey plants, or the more special manipulations sometimes practiced, such as queen rearing. The discussion of apparatus is necessarily brief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The photos show his sky scraper hives filled with fancy and No. 1 comb honey - hives that have cast no swarms, but have gone on storing honey in the supers uninterruptedly. Whether others will be able to do as well; whether they will find this system cheaper to apply than the ordinary methods of shaking swarms as described in our standard text-books, remains to be seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, 1898, Vol. 26: A Journal Devoted to Bees, and Honey, and Home Interests While speaking of foul brood I may. Say something of my experience with it. In Jan uary, 1894, I purchased an apiary that was dis eased. The former owner had transferred some combs, and used them in the extracting super. These combs had the very first begin ning of foul brood in them. In this way he introduced the disease to a nice apiary, and at the end of two years - the time I purchased the stock - I think it was four colonies that were pretty badly diseased, two of them very bad. The first year I had them, four more colonies developed it. The second year, two the third year, one while the fourth year (1897) none showed disease. During this experience I have watched it very closely and, so far as it goes, I am led to believe that the disease. Does not progress very rapidly at first. I should expect, where slight contagion has been introduced, say in the fall or early spring, that the colony infect ed might live over that summer, possibly to die the next spring and be robbed out, and so communicate the disease to a number of other colonies in the yard. At this rate, about three years from the introduction of the disease would practically finish an apiary if it were not looked after. Possibly it may develop more rapidly at times but this is my observa tion in one of my own apiaries, covering a term of four seasons, every colony thoroughly inspected from four to six times each season. Do the bees work through it freely? Is there any objection to its use, except its cost? And where is the expense? Is it in the material, or in the prepara tions'? D. A. Jones: It is in no way detrimental. The bees work through it freely. I see no objection to its use except its oust. And its cost is in the preparations. Tin would be no cheaper. For the reason that it comes in smaller sheets, and the waste would be greater. C. F. Muth: Mr. Jones sent me some perforated zinc. [thought there was more than I should ever sell. It was all sold long ago, and l have since then sold large quantities, and my customers are well pleased with it. They tell me that the queens never pass through it. During the prevalence of the hot winds, it sometimes happens that the delicate comb melts, and the first indication is a stream of melted honey and smothering bees. I have been called to the rescue, and have taken up honey and bees in my hands, placed them in a basin of tepid water, and spread my fingers as land ing-stages until all capable of restoration have plumed their wings and buzzed gratefully away, and so on until order and comfort was restored to the disturbed hive. I never was stung on any occasion whilst working amongst the bees, and only twice that I remember, and then by meeting an angry bee accidentally in the garden. The buzz of an angry bee is quite well known to their lovers. On one occasion a swarm met my sister, and actually began to settle on her hand and arm. She knew their ways, and walked very slowly on (of course sur rounded by bees) until she found what she considered a comfortable bough, under which she held her hand. The queen adopted the suggestion, and after a few minutes' patiently standing amidst the confusion, she quietly re tired, and, as you will believe, unharmed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 16: January 1, 1888 I never like to recommend any thing I have nev er tried, sol kept silent on that point. Since it has come up, though, I will say that it is my Opin ion that _it will pay, under some circumstances at least, to, leave the extracting-combs on until a start has been made in the sections. This will be some more labor, and will increase the proportion of extracted honey produced; but there will not be such a break in the work of'the colony, and not so much liability to swarm. By the way, my bees do not swarm nearly so much as most others' seem to. I do not know whether the difference is in management, locality. Or bees; but it seems to me there is a difference. I am heartily glad to see SO many testify to the worthlessness of Old combs in sections. It will probably be hard work to get it into the heads of some that it is any thing else than wicked waste to melt up nice combs; but I think we can persuade the majority that all section combs not in the best possible condition had better be made over. It is not likely that many very soon will grasp the whole truth that it will not pay to save any such sections at all. There are a few apiaries on the island, located in the mountainous district of Ponce and m Mayaguez; a few others are scattered over the island, but there is no area which could be considered over-stocked. There are extensive acreages where Italian bees cannot be found. Native hives have been used, but now some of the bee-keepers are transferring their stock to the standard hive and are raising Italian bees.
