Informally speaking, the obstructions to perfect matchings are geometric, and are of two distinct types: `space barriers' from convex geometry, and `divisibility barriers' from arithmetic lattice-based constructions. To formulate precise results, they introduce the setting of simplicial complexes with minimum degree sequences, which is a generalisation of the usual minimum degree condition. They determine the essentially best possible minimum degree sequence for finding an almost perfect matching. Furthermore, their main result establishes the stability property: under the same degree assumption, if there is no perfect matching then there must be a space or divisibility barrier. This allows the use of the stability method in proving exact results. Besides recovering previous results, the authors apply our theory to the solution of two open problems on hypergraph packings: the minimum degree threshold for packing tetrahedra in -graphs, and Fischer's conjecture on a multipartite form of the Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem. Here they prove the exact result for tetrahedra and the asymptotic result for Fischer's conjecture; since the exact result for the latter is technical they defer it to a subsequent paper.

Endeavouring to highlight the role of basic assumptions in the law, the author argues that the verb "to presuppose', with Kelsen, has not only a conceptual but also a normative dimension; and that the expression 'presupposing the basic norm'is adequate in so far as it marks the descriptive-normative nature of utterances made in specifically legal speech-situations. Addressed to legal theorists in general, the treatise purports to show that Kelsen's doctrine lends itself to an interpretation according to which the very act of "presupposing" the Grundnorm can be understood as a Grund, i.e. normative source of all positive law; and, what is more, that this interpretation admits of addressing the issue of the (formal) legitimacy of supra-national and directly applicable rules and other norms.

Book excerpt: The Poison in the Gift is a detailed ethnography of gift-giving in a North Indian village that powerfully demonstrates a new theoretical interpretation of caste. Introducing the concept of ritual centrality, Raheja shows that the position of the dominant landholding caste in the village is grounded in a central-peripheral configuration of castes rather than a hierarchical ordering. She advances a view of caste as semiotically constituted of contextually shifting sets of meanings, rather than one overarching ideological feature. This new understanding undermines the controversial interpretation advanced by Louis Dumont in his 1966 book, Homo Hierarchicus, in which he proposed a disjunction between the ideology of hierarchy based on the "purity" of the Brahman priest and the "temporal power" of the dominant caste or the king.
