Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Some Provisions of the Proposed New Constitution and Discipline of the Remonstrant Synod of Ulster: A Discourse, Delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Members of the Remonstrant Congregation, York-Street, Belfast, on Sunday, January 4, 1857, and Published at Their Request Our Synod has been engaged, of late, in remodelling its Constitution and Discipline. The Remonstrants, upon first organizing themselves into a distinct Body, deemed it advisable to retain the Code of the Church from which they had separated. The extensive ecclesiastical machinery, however, of the General Synod of Ulster was but ill adapted to the small Remonstrant Synod. Like the armour in which Saul arrayed the stripling shepherd, it was cumbrous. In course of time, its nu suitableness became generally felt and, at length, in the year 1848, our Synod appointed a Committee to prepare f'a plain, brief, and practical Code of Discipline, adapted to the circumstances of this Church. The draft of the principal part of a new Code was presented by the Committee, at the late Annual Meeting of Synod in July last, and was referred to a Special General Meeting, to consider its provisions and finally determine as to its adoption. This meeting was held in November but, out of consideration for a respected member, who, in consequence of a severe family bereavement, was no longer able to attend, it was agreed, early in the second session, to adjourn till the beginning of next March. In consequence, partly, of the interest which has been excited in the subject by the November meeting, but, chiefly, on account of the important principles involved in the issue, I most willingly comply With a request of your Committee to devote this morning's Discourse to a consideration of some remarkable provisions of the new Code convinced that, when the rights of Conscience and the interests of Truth are being endangered in our Church, as I believe they are. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion offers an introduction to Reformed theology, one of the most historically important, ecumenically active, and currently generative traditions of doctrinal enquiry, by way of reflecting upon its origins, its development, and its significance. The first part, Theological Topics, indicates the distinct array of doctrinal concerns which gives coherence over time to the identity of this tradition in all its diversity. The second part, Theological Figures, explores the life and work of a small number of theologians who have not only worked within this tradition, but have constructively shaped and inspired it in vital ways. The final part, Theological Contexts, considers the ways in which the resultant Reformed sensibilities in theology have had a marked impact both upon theological and ecclesiastical landscapes in different places and upon the wider societal landscapes of history. The result is a fascinating and compelling guide to this dynamic and vibrant theological tradition.

Book Synopsis Status and Respectability in the Cape Colony, 1750–1870 by : Robert Ross
Download or read book Status and Respectability in the Cape Colony, 1750–1870 written by Robert Ross and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a compelling example of the cultural history of South Africa, Robert Ross offers a subtle and wide-ranging study of status and respectability in the colonial Cape between 1750 and 1850. His 1999 book describes the symbolism of dress, emblems, architecture, food, language, and polite conventions, paying particular attention to domestic relationships, gender, education and religion, and analyses the values and the modes of thinking current in different strata of the society. He argues that these cultural factors were related to high political developments in the Cape, and offers a rich account of the changes in social identity that accompanied the transition from Dutch to British overrule, and of the development of white racism and of ideologies of resistance to white domination. The result is a uniquely nuanced account of a colonial society.

Book Synopsis Meetings, Manners, and Civilization by : Wilbert van Vree
Download or read book Meetings, Manners, and Civilization written by Wilbert van Vree and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologist Vree peers into the primordial obscurity before Robert's Rules and traces the evolution of behavior during councils, assemblies, parliaments, and conferences to the present within the framework of Norbert Elias' theory of civilizing processes. Rather than a comparative history, he presents a succession of case studies such as the militarization and demilitarization of meetings in agrarian societies, the emergence of a Protestant meeting order, and the professionalization of meeting manners.
