Book Synopsis Fathomless Heart by : Lewis Thompson
Download or read book Fathomless Heart written by Lewis Thompson and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Thompson (1909–1949) was primarily a poet, a man of letters influenced by Eastern spiritualism and the poets Rimbaud and Rilke. As Richard Lannoy, the editor of Fathomless Heart, writes, Thompson, who rejected traditional literature after experiencing a spiritual crisis as a teenager, wrote “solely as a form of spiritual exercise the most sparse and urgent communication conceivable.” Later in life he wandered alone in India for many years. This book is the culmination of his life and writing. Fathomless Heart is Thompson’s view on how to live a spiritual and truthful life—how to awaken to full consciousness. Meant to be sampled for insights into topics that matter most to the reader, the book is divided into sections on universal subjects such as Truthfulness, Ignorance, Sexuality, Beauty, and Idleness. Novelist Somerset Maugham met Thompson at an Indian ashram and incorporated him into the character of Larry, the hero of the novel The Razor’s Edge, which popularized the archetypal westerner pursuing spirituality in the East. In reality, Thompson directed his unique powers of concentration toward exploration of mental awareness rather than on the accumulation of knowledge about exotic spiritual techniques—an awareness that manifests throughout this useful and inspiring book.

Download or read book The Great War written by John Terraine and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It did not need a Fort Sumter cannonade to set the world in flames in 1914, only the pistol shots of an assassin. The Great War 1914-1918, written by one of the leading military historians of his time, John Terrain, thoroughly examines the political, economical and social triggers which led to the eruption of WWI, as well as the progression of the war itself through various campaigns and battles which resulted in the final victory of the Entente Powers. The Great War 1914-1918, first published in 1965, is a brilliant and comprehensive narrative and stands as an authoritative record in its own right.
Book Synopsis Gated Luxury Condominiums in India by : Dhara Patel
Download or read book Gated Luxury Condominiums in India written by Dhara Patel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gated Luxury Condominiums in India: A Socio-Spatial Arena for New Cosmopolitans critically examines gated luxury condominiums in contemporary India, exploring their role in shaping elite power and identity within the framework of neoliberalism. It delves into the spatial structure, perception and post-occupancy experience of these enclaves, offering valuable insights into India's urban development. This book convincingly elucidates the complex socio-spatial transformations underway in India, inviting readers to understand the depth and breadth of these changes, particularly within the rapidly expanding middle and upper-middle classes. It adopts a robust multi-disciplinary approach, combining methodologies such as spatial ethnography, threshold mapping, qualitative interviews and discourse analysis. Focused on the architectural typology of luxury condominiums, the study serves as a lens for broader social transformations grounded in case studies from Mumbai and Pune. Through a meticulous dissection of the lived experiences of various categories of users – owners, visitors and service staff – the book unveils the complex socio-spatial hierarchies perpetuated within these enclaves. Drawing on theories of cosmopolitanism and postcolonial critiques, the monograph makes a significant scholarly contribution to the disciplines of architecture and the built environment. It fills a gap in the existing literature on modern domesticity in India, offering original research that highlights how architecture is instrumental in socially divisive practices of elite formation. It will appeal to scholars, researchers and students across disciplines like architecture, landscape design, spatial sociology, urban studies and area studies, focusing on India and South Asia. It is particularly compelling for those interested in the sociocultural dynamics of the middle class, encompassing themes such as domesticity, material culture and spatial politics within the context of Indian condominiums.

Book Synopsis Interpretations of Luxury by : Linda Lisa Maria Turunen
Download or read book Interpretations of Luxury written by Linda Lisa Maria Turunen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the elements that constitute the perceived luxuriousness of a brand, this book addresses the changing definitions of the term ‘luxury’ in today’s world. Taking the approach that the concept of luxury evolves from the consumer, the author introduces a conceptual model which explains how the consumer interprets the luxuriousness of a brand. This innovative study analyses the key elements that influence luxury branding, such as extended product, perceived uniqueness, authenticity and context specificity. By critically reflecting on the existing definitions of luxury and its challenges, this book makes a unique contribution to research and an essential read for marketing students and scholars.
