MONTGOMERY, ESQ., and read by him at a regular quarterly meeting of the Society on Tuesday evening, March 14, 1905. BRITISH INVASION. August 25, 1777, the British army under General Howe landed in the Elk River, at the bottom of Chesapeake Bay, for the purpose of proceeding to Philadelphia in this round-about way and capturing this rich, prosperous, and populous city, then the capital of the United Colonies and from which emanated the combined and determined opposition to the British government, because they had tried to do so shortly before by way of New Jersey but failed. Washington's army was then encamped at Wilmington, and General Washington learning early that evening that Howe's army was landing there, ordered Generals Greene and Stephen to march from Wilmington to intercept him and protect the public supplies which were stored at the head of Elk River; and he made a stirring appeal to the army by way of preparing the men to give battle to the enemy. His numerical strength was about 14,000 men, including the militia, but the effective force was only 8000, and these were indifferently armed and equipped; and the British army was about 16,000, but it was finely equipped for its hazardous incursion so far inland from the sea where its supplies lay. General Armstrong had command of the militia of Pennsylvania, and he was urged to forward to Wilmington during rhe night all the men that he could muster properly armed.
