Book excerpt: Frontiers of Fluid Mechanics documents the proceedings of the Beijing International Conference on Fluid Mechanics, held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, 1-4 July 1987. The aims of the conference were to provide a forum for a cross-sectional review of the state-of-the-art and new advances in various branches of fluid mechanics, and to promote the exchange of ideas by experts from different parts of the world. The contributions made by researchers at the conference are organized into 18 parts. Part 1 presents invited lectures covering topics such as separated flow, porous flow, and turbulence modeling. Part 2 contains papers dealing with turbulence. Parts 3, 4, and 5 include studies on flow stability and transition, transonic flow, and boundary layer flows and shock waves, respectively. Part 6 is devoted to aerodynamics and gas dynamics. Part 7 examines water waves while Part 8 is devoted to hydrodynamics and hydraulics. The papers in Part 9 examine bubbles and drops. Part 10 deals with experiments involving vortices, jets, wakes, and cavities. Part 11 contains studies on geophysical and astrophysical fluid mechanics. Parts 12 and 13 investigate two-phase flow and flow through porous media, and non-Newtonian flow, respectively. Part 14 takes up magneto-hydrodynamics and physic-chemical flow. Part 15 covers biofluid mechanics. Part 16 contains papers on industrial and environmental fluid mechanics while Part 17 deals with heat transfer. Part 18 contains papers that were received after the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoneuroscience, nanoneurosurgery, and nanobioelectronics have the potential to revolutionize medicine and improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders over the next 10-20 years. The Textbook of Nanoneuroscience and Nanoneurosurgery presents a state-of-the-art review of the field, providing current information about nanoplatforms and their use in neurosurgery, neurology, neuroscience, and neuroradiology. The text also reviews the latest regulatory guidelines that influence the translation of nanotechnological research from the laboratory to the clinic, as well as the most recent information on biodevices and pharmaceutical spinoffs. It highlights presidential and congressional initiatives and programs that may significantly impact the field in the near future. Chapters discuss the latest science and technologies—which are applied to diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders—as well as regulatory issues that impact product development. This volume describes advances that have already been translated to the clinic or hold significant promise for future application in nanoneurosurgery, as well as their potential impact. A full-color text, the book contains contributions by more than 120 researchers, original and descriptive illustrations, and more than 3,000 references. Offering broad coverage of nanotechnological applications in diverse areas and addressing FDA regulation and healthcare policy, this volume provides a foundation of ideas and methods for scientists and physicians to devise successful, less invasive procedures for future treatment of nervous system disorders.

Book Synopsis The Birth of Bioethics by : Albert R. Jonsen
Download or read book The Birth of Bioethics written by Albert R. Jonsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first broad history of the growing field of bioethics. Covering the period 1947-1987, it examines the origin and evolution of the debates over human experimentation, genetic engineering, organ transplantation, termination of life-sustaining treatment, and new reproductive technologies. It assesses the contributions of philosophy, theology, law and the social sciences to the expanding discourse of bioethics. Written by one of the field's founders, it is based on extensive archival research into resources that are difficult to obtain and on interviews with many leading figures. A very readable account of the development of bioethics, the book stresses the history of ideas but does not neglect the social and cultural context and the people involved.
