Book excerpt: There have been passenger tramways in Britain for 150 years, but it is a rollercoaster story of rise, decline and a steady return. Trams have come and gone, been loved and hated, popular and derided, considered both wildly futuristic and hopelessly outdated by politicians, planners and the public alike. Horse trams, introduced from the USA in the 1860s, were the first cheap form of public transport on city streets. Electric systems were developed in nearly every urban area from the 1890s and revolutionised town travel in the Edwardian era.A century ago, trams were at their peak, used by everyone all over the country and a mark of civic pride in towns and cities from Dover to Dublin. But by the 1930s they were in decline and giving way to cheaper and more flexible buses and trolleybuses. By the 1950s all the major systems were being replaced. Londons last tram ran in 1952 and ten years later Glasgow, the city most firmly linked with trams, closed its network down. Only Blackpool, famous for its decorated cars, kept a public service running and trams seemed destined only for scrapyards and museums.A gradual renaissance took place from the 1980s, with growing interest in what are now described as light rail systems in Europe and North America. In the UK and Ireland modern trams were on the streets of Manchester from 1992, followed successively by Sheffield, Croydon, the West Midlands, Nottingham, Dublin and Edinburgh (2014). Trams are now set to be a familiar and significant feature of twenty-first century urban life, with more development on the way.

Book Synopsis D. H. Lawrence, Transport and Cultural Transition by : Andrew F. Humphries
Download or read book D. H. Lawrence, Transport and Cultural Transition written by Andrew F. Humphries and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses D. H. Lawrence’s interest in, and engagement with, transport as a literal and metaphorical focal point for his ontological concerns. Focusing on five key novels, this book explores issues of mobility, modernity and gender. First exploring how mechanized transportation reflects industry and patriarchy in Sons and Lovers, the book then considers issues of female mobility in The Rainbow, the signifying of war transport in Women in Love, revolution and the meeting of primitive and modern in The Plumed Serpent, and the reflection of dystopian post-war concerns in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Appealing to Lawrence, modernist, and mobilities researchers, this book is also of interest to readers interested in early twentieth century society, the First World War and transport history.

Book Synopsis Trams Around Dewsbury & Wakefield by : Norman Ellis
Download or read book Trams Around Dewsbury & Wakefield written by Norman Ellis and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Trams Around Dewsbury and Wakefield' is part of the new series 'Transport Through the Ages', brought to you by Wharncliffe Books. This fascinating book traces the nostalgic journey of the trams through the ages. 'Trams Around Dewsbury and Wakefield' is an exquisitely illustrated history. It covers two relatively large tramway systems based at Dewsbury and Wakefield and a small system based at Ossett. Unlike other tramway undertakings in West Yorkshire, which were municipally owned and operated, these three were company operated. The book relies heavily on old picture postcards, collected by the author since 1970. Most of the illustrations have not appeared in print before. In addition to trams, they reveal a background of altered or vanished buildings, plus people going about their daily lives. Take yourself on a nostalgic journey through the transitional times of these tramways, as you read 'Trams Around Dewsbury and Wakefield'.

Book Synopsis The Rise and Rise of Road Transport, 1700-1990 by : Theodore Cardwell Barker
Download or read book The Rise and Rise of Road Transport, 1700-1990 written by Theodore Cardwell Barker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-28 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books about Britain's transport history have concentrated upon canals and railways. It is now clear that a great deal of traffic went by road even before turnpikes, and that goods as well as passenger services were much more highly developed than used to be supposed. This book is an important survey of road transport over the past three centuries. The authors summarise the new evidence and arguments and explain why we need to take a longer view of the subject. They shed new light on the importance of horse-drawn freight in the eighteenth century before the introduction of turnpikes, offset the undue attention paid to the railways in the nineteenth century, and stress that motor transport's present great importance only dates from the 1950s. A full bibliography is provided for more extended study.

Book Synopsis Britain's Living Past by : Anthony Burton
Download or read book Britain's Living Past written by Anthony Burton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's Living Past is a celebration of the best of the past, of things that have been preserved because they still matter to the community. It is a book in which the emphasis is very much on the word 'living'; looking at traditions, pastimes and working practices, some centuries old, that survive today not as museum pieces or in pages of a history book but as part of everyday modern life. From reminders of Britain's great maritime past in the crafts of the shipwright and the rope maker, to the organised mayhem that is the Ashbourne Tuesday football match and the exotic splendour of Giffords traditional circus, writer Tony Burton and photographer Rob Scott have travelled the length and breadth of our great nation to recreate for the reader the amazing sights they have seen. Together they have travelled from Shetland in the far north to the tip of Cornwall. They have sailed along the Scottish coast in a paddle steamer and learned how to make Melton Mowbray pork pies by hand. They have watched ponies galloping through the streets of Appleby and resisted the temptation to try too many of the sweets in the world's oldest sweet shop. This is a book that delights in the rich diversity of our historic survivors. For both author and photographer it has been a pleasure to witness many skilled people at work: to discover the complexity of building a fairground organ or to marvel at the skill and athleticism of circus performers. This is a book of rich variety that celebrates the great survivors from our islands' history.
